An art style no one else can replicate, and memorable characters and casual dialog to match. I enjoyed the visuals, the music, and the vibes. The linear nature of the game had me stuck at several points that made it frustrating at times, especially given progression to the final lantern is locked behind a single bird that is easy to miss. Some puzzles were non-obvious, and I did not find them particularly clever after I did solve them, but perceived them as sloppy. The best puzzles were the ones that made full use of the rotating lantern mechanic. Hope to see more from this developer as they refine and evolve their designs and concepts.

I can describe 30 Birds with two words: Absolutely Enchanting! I loved this game from the moment I started playing and was completely captivated by the art and the music. You control Zig – a young girl who arrives at Lantern City. It is a magical world of color, shapes, music, and hidden gems. The environment consists of multiple 4-sided “Lanterns” that rotate as you move around them. It is a 2D world, but you can often step behind items and through items. Travel between Lanterns is by train or magic carpet. Upon arrival, you learn that the Bird Goddess has been kidnapped, and you are tasked with her rescue. This involves finding and enlisting the help of 30 birds who are scattered about. There are hidden doorways to find, collectibles to collect, games to play, and puzzles to solve. Each Lantern is populated with interesting characters going about their daily lives. Some can be interacted with and some provide important information. The dialog is clever, and you click to proceed with conversation. There are no voice-overs which was a plus in this game. You have a quest log that keeps you on track and lets you know where you should focus your efforts. This, plus a map and progress indicators for collectibles make the interface very player-friendly. For me, navigating with a controller worked much better than trying to use the WASD keys. However, I switched to the keyboard and mouse for puzzles and games. Achievement hunters should pay attention to the descriptions on the store page and explore every possible nook and cranny. There are some achievements that seem mutually exclusive, so you may need to play through part of the game twice for 100%. I found all collectibles on my first pass so my second time through is going faster. Honestly, I don’t mind spending more time with Zig. Because I was aiming for completion, I explored every scene more thoroughly than I might have otherwise. I loved the moments when I found a hidden room or an unexpected path. You obtain magic shoes along the way which give you the ability to ‘dash’ through barriers which allow access to even more secrets. The game autosaves quite often, to multiple slots. You can also manually save or load an earlier point in the game. There are up to 10 save slots, one of which is overwritten each time the game auto-saves. As a result, you are somewhat limited as to how far back you can reload. For the most part, the game played flawlessly. I had one hiccup along the way, but the developer was responsive and had me back on track in no time. His attention to player feedback is a big ‘plus’ for 30 Birds. I highly recommend this game to those who love to experience beautiful aesthetics and embark on a noble quest. Although 30 Birds is unique, those who like games such as Sable and Chants of Sennaar should not miss this wonderful adventure!
