I was looking for a fun game that I could play without compromise and that would gratify me, with an easy yet challenging gameplay. So I ended up finding Hats are Not Allowed. With an intelligent humor, engaging atmosphere and a moderate difficulty, it captivated me from the first moment I played it. I highly recommend this wonderful game.

Fun and challenging game, with a very characteristic acid humor. Everything in the game is nice, from its well-crafted designs to the charismatic characters, as well as a fun gameplay that encourages you to move forward to "see how far the story goes". It's a beautiful game to have fun, if you give it a chance I'm sure you won't regret it!

Eh, the gameplay and story are pretty thin. It plays clunky. $7 is not an astronomical amount but there isn't a lot of game here. The videos look much better than the game plays.

Pretty good overall, combat took a minute to get used to but it's very satisfying playing on the hardest difficulty

For lovers of predication based gameplay, challenge, quick games, and fast paced action! Hats are not allowed, oh boy what a game. This game is not one to pass over. Its definitely worth giving a chance. As is my usual review format, I'll give you what i liked and didn't like and see if it sounds right for you. I truly think this one is worth giving a chance for all reaction speed, tactics, strategy or quick game enjoyers. Bugs, Glitches, and Crashing- Throughout my play-through, the game did not crash, bug, change from full screen when alt tabbing or do anything generally displeasing when testing, and at least from what i could tell, there was no graphical errors or input errors. Everything reacts how I believe to be intended, and thus, i can deem that at least in my play-through, there were no game breaking issues. Gameplay and Story - The gameplay is incredibly unique and worth checking out. It plays like no game i've ever played before. The movement, the duel based system set on the 2D viewpoint was incredibly unique. The game wasn't my usual genre, and i actually tend to dislike fast paced and reaction speed based games, and that's provable by viewing my other reviews, yet, i could still find a lot of enjoyment in it. I recommend playing on standard with tips for your first playthrough, and then going onto hard for additional challenge. The game is challenging, at least on certain stages, and I honestly loved that aspect. Nothing was impossible, and a lot of the enemy AI didn't seem to have a lot of consistent and predictable movement later into the game, which only adds to having skill in order to proceed. A lot of games now-adays lack much challenge, but this game, definitely has a very fun and interesting learning curve to it. If you like a challenge and learning different strategies and finding the play style that works for you, this game is super exciting. In terms of the story, its not incredibly complex. I'm not going to put any spoilers because simply, there is not a load to cover, at least yet. Its a pretty simple story, yet, i still found that the characters were likable and interesting..... But, this game does beg the question.... is story that essential? I would say this game is more focused on the gameplay itself over any story or lore aspect. There is a story, but you can definitely tell that the main focus is the combat and mechanics, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, simply out of the fact that the gameplay itself, was enough to carry the game. Almost like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a game with a vastly confusing and convoluted fun story, that was more focused on you being a badass as opposed to having any deep, or important story. Very challenging! Very Entertaining! Music - The music was perfect. It gave me total retro doom vibes or Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. The score matched perfectly and made the whole experience very entertaining. Duration - The game can take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours dependent on how quickly you catch on to the mechanics, although, i recommend playing for each of the various endings! Achievements - The game has achievements and not a lot of them. If you're interested in achievement hunting, this game definitely doesn't pose a major challenge. Much like most of the games i review and achievement hunt on, it doesn't have many achievements that you don't just acquire while playing. As you play, you get achievements. Some for getting new tiers, other for simply choosing certain endings and whatnot. You just have to play the game in order to get them. This game is special. Its something that is entirely its own. I cant find a reference point, or a link to another game, and that's an incredibly rare thing to see. If you play games like Osu, Fire and Ice or Turn-based Games, you should definitely give this game a chance. Its incomparable, Its challenging, its short, and its highly entertaining.

It's okay. The music is pretty good - VERY good in fact - and I like the general aesthetic and what little worldbuilding and plot there is. The problem is that the fencing gameplay is just a little too barebones - and that's the main thing you do in the game. You aim high, middle or low. Okay, yeah, this is how it is in every single IRL swordsmanship school I know of, but I don't know. It doesn't really translate well to gameplay. You can either strike, block or parry... and that's pretty much it. In practice I found myself quickly approaching an opponent and smacking him in the face as fast as I could - if I tried actually fighting properly, I'd just take lots of damage and not get anyhwere. And when I realised that this is what the entire game is going to be like, I lost interest. Cool idea, fantastic music, but the execution... not to my taste.
