Very well made, but be ready for a heaping helping of sociopolitical themes and commentary. This is mostly a sci-fi "visual novel with extra steps" as one YouTuber put it, but there are also sizable chunks of places and time from the past - both this game's past and our real-world past - where things get heavy and themes are not-so-subtly implied. Again, very well-done game, but thinly-veiled allegories for abuse and allusions to real-world political events isn't what I bought it for. I wish I could enjoy it, it looks amazing and the voice acting is surprisingly solid, but it's not for me.

It cannot be considered a game, more like a visual story. The story starts well but as it goes on, it becomes disappointing. Longer than needed. Music is a positive point. They make you walk around without reason, making it really boring to "play". If there were different outcomes for your actions... but there is not so you are just walking in a straight line story until the end. There are parts of the game that are an absolute waste of time with no meaning in the overall story. They could have done much better.

I don't know how to put into words the impact that this game has had on me. I don't know if it's my half-Cantonese, half-American upbringing that made me relate to the story of Iris so much or if it's fantastic commentary on multiple topics, ranging from the Hong Kong protests in 2019 to the morality of immortality. But this game has left a sizable impact on the way I perceive a lot of things. It took me nearly a month to understand how I felt about this game. But I'd rather leave a quote from Iris's Father to give you an impression:
"So if we stayed silent? didn't stand up for ourselves? They would say...this is how it always was. They would say...this is what the people wanted. But no. They can't say that. Because it has gone down in history... That we resisted fiercely. That we fought for a different future...until we couldn't. That legacy lives in us."
what an incredible piece of storytelling this is. it is beautiful and poetic in a way that almost hurts and yet is underpinned by this immense sadness. a game where you just have to stare at a wall for a while after you've finished. i am absolutely obsessed by the weird culty sister society and its myth-making. nothing is explained to you, so you feel like an anthropologist unearthing the history and culture of the place while trying to get at the truth. meanwhile, the way the family is portrayed feels so incredibly real and raw and hit me in the freaking heart bro. the fact the two storylines are actually in the end about the same things - intergenerational trauma and violence and forgiveness - is galaxy brain level writing.

1000xResist is a game that stands out with its profound storytelling and unique artistic style. It covers deeply emotional and philosophical topics with themes around generational trauma, justice and political revolutions while combining these into a gripping narrative / story line that immerses you into the world. The gameplay itself takes a step back and is mostly there to carry you from story points or optional dialogue moments but this allows the narrative and atmosphere to be focused upon. While these gameplay moments are minimal, the decisions you do make feel impactful and add a level of interactivity that wouldn't be possible without. The art and writing is almost perfect - while I experienced some graphical issues in places and was confused by a few story beats - there was an evocative depth and detail within the world that felt scarily real. The game doesn't rely on traditional methods of FUN and in many ways you may leave feeling more disturbed than you started, but it does so in an impactful and reflective experience that resonates with you beyond the end of the game, and while you may not feel willing to provide an emotional investment, you are rewarded with an unforgettable story. In many ways I wouldn't consider it a game, and more a narrative driven interactive work of art that captures the complexities of human emotion, struggles and resilience.

Absolute Cinema Really unique, one of a kind game. It's really hard to describe it as a one specific thing, all I can say - please give it a shot.

This is 99% story and 1% game but I feel the story is worth it. I will not elaborate further.

As the eldest child of an Asian family, I've found that no other game has ever understood me this well. It comforted me in ways I never expected a game to do. I have too much to say about how it makes me feel and I truly don't know if I can do it without crying. I can't think of a bigger praise than that. Thank you, Sunset Visitor.

What you're looking at is a sin. You know how sometimes a game has a moment where you go "WHAT???? So that's what was the significance of this? OHHHH" and everything comes together in a beautiful, ecstatic explosion of awesomeness? 1000xRESIST is a mosaic of such moments. It's difficult to express this correctly, because I've never seen anything like this - not at this scale. And this simply isn't something that shows well in the marketing materials. This is, indeed, a game that needs to be played to be believed. Perhaps watching some influencer play it might be a little more indicative, but... no, just no. It's a sin. It's a sin that the rules of our reality dictate that this game cannot be perceived for what it is, and as such has had nowhere near the monumental, paradigm-shifting attention it deserves. And even if it did - that's not the only sin we're talking about here. Let me ask you: what sort of people play games, in your opinion? How old are they? What gender or social class they are? What are their expectations and experiences? The answer, in the broadest sense, is probably "yes", or "all of them"; but obviously there's a certain baseline, a general target audience, the most common perceived type of a player. And this player is not treated as very bright. Whether rightfully or not is debatable - there are many wonderful cases of awesome failures of media comprehension in the gaming community - but the point is, games unfortunately tend to stick to the lower end of media sophistication. The thematic complexity is mediocre at best, the plot twists are predictable; and there isn't much of a pushback against this state of things. And that is the second sin. 1000xRESIST says "f*ck that" and expects you to pay attention. To be smart. To remember. Many Japanese visual novels use a huge amount of flashbacks to make sure you're always on top of things ("Mukuro Ikusaba...") - even about things that you've just experienced! Well, nothing of the sort here. You will remember. You will remain, and remain, and remain. Which is not to say that the game is hard to understand. All it asks is that you pay attention. No need to keep notes, things are impactful enough that you will remember anyway. You do need a certain level of curiosity to really get the best of it, but this is a story game about revealing old secrets. You play this because you're curious. Oh, and maybe you've noticed that 1000xRESIST lists NieR: Automata as an inspiration. I find that incredibly funny. NieR: Automata is a game that uses the aesthetic of intellectualism to justify shoving a (lovely) thicc robot ass in a (lovely) designer dress in your face, but otherwise doesn't really say anything new - it's also a game that expects the gamer to only have minimal philosophical knowledge, if any. 1000xRESIST doesn't do that. The asses aren't thicc and there are no designer dresses, but there are also no random references to European philosophers. The only intellectualism - if you can call it that - comes from you seeing the thematic connections and noticing how on point everything is. On that note, the game is actually a lot more unabashedly sexual than NieR; NieR is more voyeuristic - you watch, and perhaps imagine. 1000xRESIST treats sexuality as a natural element of life, and it's woven pretty elegantly into the script. There isn't much of that here, but what is there, is just... refreshing, I guess is the word. Which is just sad. There's this quote by Mark Twain, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes", and so does this game. It rhymes. It rhymes with itself, but also with reality. This might be ancient history by now, but if you decide to play this, you should know that Hong Kong wasn't always under Chinese influence. And when the... takeover began, they resisted; knowing that they'll fail. Their only wish - to be remembered. Tell me. Is this, in your opinion, a game review? I seemingly didn't say much about... well, anything related to the game. That's because the plume is already black with sin. Telling you anything would lessen your experience, and be perhaps the gravest sin of all. So this is all I'm going to write, and I can only hope it's going to be enough. You could consider the story of 1000xResist as a meditation on blame. Who's at fault for the way your parents act? As a work of art, it's peerless. As a game, it's a walking simulator without any form of mechanical "difficulty". One of the only negative reviews on the entire platform mentions how there are achievements for discovering rooms that have no built purpose to them. There's a part in Mark Twain's *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court* that includes a 2,000 word digression on how higher wages compared with a higher cost of living leaves you with less money than someone making lower wages who has no overhead. Mark Twain didn't cut that, even though it served no purpose to the story he was telling. What I'm angling at is that the "unnecessary" fluff in 1000xResist is concomitant with an engrossing narrative. There would be a distinguishable loss if either was made more 'efficient'. If you're interested in a game that cuts out all the fat, I hear Minecraft is a good read. The medium of games is still the only way it's possible to tell this story. In the same way you couldn't render The Three Musketeers as a song, or Nessun Dorma as a painting, 1000xResist -cannot be in a different format-. It simply does too much visually to gouge out your eyes, and too much agentially to let someone else tell you how it happened. I just hope that you are lucky enough in your life to be profoundly moved by it.
