I took a chance on this game and I'm glad I did. There are a lot of reviews complaining about the physics of the game but I think those players are expecting the sad, sluggish, "realistic" physics that plague racing games like Wreckfest. This game is super unrealistic and fun as hell because of it.
Couple notes: The default for "Traction Control" is set to 0.4, which at least in my opinion, is WAY too low. I ended up tinkering with it a bit before just setting it to the max 1.0. Gives you way better control over your car.
The in-game voice acting (yes there is a story in this game but it doesn't really matter) made me think it might be AI voiceover. However the developer claims it's all real actors so I believe it's just non-native English vas and/or use of voice filters on some characters that makes it seem that way.

There's a lot of things to like about Trail Out. It can be a lot of fun. But it already has plenty of good reviews. It deserves a few bad reviews that point out its flaws. And it has three major flaws. The first 2 flaws a lot of other racing games also have:
1) The upgrades for your car are meaningless.
They may make you go a bit faster or survive a bit longer, but they actually make no difference in whether you win or lose, because the computer racers upgrade right with you. They always go faster than you, no matter what upgrades you install. When you get a new class of cars that are better, so do they. There is nothing you can buy or upgrade that will make you faster than the lead cars. No matter how fast you go or how much of a lead you have at any point, the computer rubber bands the other racers so that they will always catch right up to you by the final lap.
2) The races are completely determined by the computer.
You start every race in last place and the same few cars are always ahead: either yellow, red, usually at first, and then black or blue later in a longer race. Usually, it's Frank in the yellow far ahead. Ivan is always last or close to it. Every single race, this is exactly the same. After completing the campaign, a special character unlocks in a black car that is faster than anything you can buy or upgrade. Because you are always behind, the only way to win is to let the computer rubber band/slow the lead car so you're close to it, which almost always happens in the last lap close to the end, which it's obviously programmed to do. Then, you have to count on the lead car crashing or skidding or having some accident determined by the computer.
Winning is literally about redoing races over and over until the random chance works in your favor - the computer randomly makes the lead cars crash and you can zoom by. And this is how you get first place: it's random chance when the computer sabotages the race for other drivers ahead of you.
3) This game is supposedly about crashing into competitors, but it constantly punishes you for any contact.
Crash into too many other cars and your car is destroyed quickly. Even small crashes can randomly destroy your gearbox, nitrous or engine, making it impossible to win. Crash into anybody too hard and they take minimal damage while you go flying through the windshield in a cut scene and end up far behind them when you finally reset.
Speaking of resetting, no matter how hard you knock competitors off the track or into obstacles, it basically does nothing. They instantly reset and are right back next to you within a few second.
The best strategy for winning a race is to never bump into anybody if you can avoid it. And for a game that's supposed to be about massive crashes, that sucks.

I don't know if this was the same team or a member of the same team that worked on Flatout, but the love for that series is clear with this one.
It's quite fun, though frustrating at times. You get all the Derby, Track and destruction games you'd expect from this spiritual successor and they all function as if you've played them a million times...because let's be honest you did.
The Good:
-Plays like you'd want it to play, like the FLATOUT series.
-More visually appealing than playing FLATOUT 1 on GOG
-Good vehicle variety and even more with DLC at modest price points
-Yes there are DLC but no invasive MicroTXs
-Actually Fun.
Points for Improvement
-despite being exactly the type of game you'd play on controller, it sometimes does not take inputs and you have to exit the menu you're in with the mouse and re-enter. Not game breaking but annoying. (Note: This may be a problem with my 3rd party app "Controller Companion" but I've not tested it without.)
-The voice acting is not excellent and you can kinda tell it's the same dude barely changing his voice (not to say this is terrible if you like the added campiness...it's kinda charming in a way but the bigger issue is that it seems inconsistent. in race bark lines seem different than the voices in cutscenes and that's where it really takes away from the production value)
-cutscenes, the cutscenes are not THAT bad, but I'm not really paying attention to it for a variety of reasons. As I am posting this as "reccomended" I'll let you figure out those reasons.
-Big negative for me, No splitscreen that I'm aware of and no multiplayer that I'm aware of. I don't care as much about online MP as split-screen would make this a great party game or something.
-upgrading your car is nice but there seems to be no real reason not to max out the thing right away every time.
-I would have liked some more track/arena variety and maybe some more innovation with the carnage games.

Only played for a few minutes but I already know I'm going to love this game. There is a story, but I don't care about it. The game lets you skip it so you don't have to pay attention to it. It's just like Flatout but with bigger explosions.

Fantastic. great controls. good vibes. many elements from games i like but also a vision of its own. its an absolute must play if you like racing games of any sort. A complete vision of what the people want from racing video games. Fun on a bun! seriously good and everyone should want it.

It's an spiritual successor to Flatout 2/Ultimate Carnage with more eurojank since it was made by a small russian team, it has really bad voice acting and animations, and made in Unreal Engine which means a lot of stutters and bad optimization.
Good thing is the game is really fun, it has a good selection of indie heavy metal soundtrack, great damage on the cars (although some crash damage is inconsistent), multiple game modes and track variaty, and it also grabs elements from Need for Speed: Most Wanted 2005 and Hot Pursuit 2010.
Overall I give it a solid 7/10 just for the fun factor, reminds me a lot of Flatout but more janky.

Too buggy to be fun, played the demo liked it, played the main game , running on rog ally x its hold and cold, freeze frames a little, not much but enough to take the smooth feeling out of the game, its janky, but controller game constantly wants to stop working with controller that i have to then use the mouse to progress to next/last menu and then controller works again , gets tiring when its always happening . and cloud save even though it shows it updates, doesnt work , I watched the rog ally x update the save after playing on pc, loaded it up and my save was not updated .
Too much effort required to play I'm sorry, good bones here just not enough meat . It just made me want to play Wreckfest to be honest.

Feels like a love letter and spiritual successor to FlatOut 2. Is simply fun n chaotic, good selection of vehicle, nice tracks and varied game modes, not to say the music slaps give you the adrenaline to pedal to the metal. Beside all of that the career mode is silly fun B-Movie grade you could say is soo bad is good, but really I enjoyed the cheesy story and voice acting, the game takes parody on many media and pop culture kept putting a smile on my face and ended enjoying and having fun out of it more then other AAA titles on past year

I was a massive fan of Flatout 2, never stopped playing it from when it was released till now. So this was a huge surprise to find!!
It's very playable, but needs a fair bit of work to live up to its potential and be timeless fun like its predecessors. In its current state the sound isn't very good between menus, crashes, boost/nos and engine sounds especially, when i play a driving game i want to feel the engine! i want to feel the boost, and a big way to achieve that is through sound as well as visuals which Flatout 2 exceeded in achieving, excellently, you'd hear the "wooosh" and the graphics would give off an effect like you where going into hyperspeed.
The soundtrack feels like its made by a teenager from 2005 which is okay because you can put your own music in apparently, although I'm searching around for the folder everywhere and can't find it.
The graphics feel like a mix of new and very old, I'm talking 2001 Time Crisis on SEGA. DLSS seems to make things much more early SEGA-like.
Glitching at the start of races and in cut scenes.
Controller support for PC. I have a Xbox one controller for my PC and in this game it mostly works fine except there's very little rumble action.
I'm running 32gb 3200mhz RAM in dual channel with an AMD Ryzen 5600X and an RTX4060Ti. I have a 650w Gold PSU and a 570x Tuf series mobo with a 980pro M.2 Drive as primary, and Evo SSD as secondary which is what I have Trail out installed on. I have all the latest drivers for DX on Windows 11 64bit.
Other than that, it's fun and pretty impressive in certain ways graphically. I'd still say Flatout 2 is more fun though, and the graphics in that game hold up really well in 2025

Trail Out is the FlatOut 4 we deserved—pure chaotic madness! Having played BeamNG and Wreckfest, this game is way more fun, though Wreckfest still wins in destruction. The AI? Both fun and annoyingly aggressive, constantly shoving you off the track. The car collection is massive, with crazy rides to smash and crash. The story is surprisingly hilarious yet somewhat thoughtful. Explosions, ragdoll mayhem, and non-stop action make this a must-play for thrill seekers. If you love chaos, this game delivers!
