Not a sequel to Void Bastards, but it is at least as good.
The strategy RPG-type "world maps" replace the individual "doom levels" of its predecessor. I can't say I prefer that format necessarily, but that doesn't mean that I think this game is worse. Far from it, actually--the strategy boards are actually quite fun to navigate. Hedging your resources and trying to cram as much lootin' shootin' rootin' and tootin' into one turn as possible is quite the experience! I'm not usually a fan of "locked room encounters" like what this game has for its central mechanic... but the weapons given and the enemies available and the diversity of maps all allow for a dynamic experience that's really fun to just... play out.
I'm glad that this game leans hard on the same "weirdo dystopia" that Void Bastards was building. Except instead of a general prison industrial complex it's a mining federation owned by robber barons. The switch to a much more "narrative focus" really helps put a spotlight on the writers for this team. The crew's got all manner of interactions with each other, ranging from just barking at each other for missing too many shots, to wholesome moments.
Also the monster folks you can play as are cute.
This game is fuckin' great and my only real gripes come from a matter of preference.
If I had one real "wish" about this game: I wish the strategy elements were kept in space, and planetside stuff was all FPS gameplay with stealth and whatnot. This game doesn't have the nail-biting stress moments of being tracked down by a big beastie like some of the enemies in Void Bastards.
Then again, there also aren't any enemies that are truly annoying to fight here like there were in that game, so that's at least a plus.

Neat Idea.
Problem is a lot of enemy shots are instant, so you easily take damage every combat, especially on higher difficulties where just peeking your head out means you took a hit. Also damage carries over between fights on a zone board, so you just get chipped away as you're being rushed through a map.
A full run feels awfully long as well, so overall it just feels bad.

There are a lot of bugs that seem relatively easy to fix. I was caught in the same gunfight over and over. I got the screen that advised me that road was open, but I had to fight the same enemies. I beat the room 4 times before I quit the game and uninstalled. Bugs like this makes this game less enjoyable.

I really loved this! A great follow-up to Void Bastards.
The gameplay is great and is as good as Void Bastards. The art direction is incredible and is as good if not better than void bastards. The general gameplay is just plain great.
Instead of surviving on a series of ships you are shuffling the different abilities of the bastards that you have available as you progress. At first I was frustrated because of how different it was from Void Bastards but then I really got into the groove. It is extremely well balanced and fun. The different characters are amazing and have much different play styles. It is just so well balanced that I always felt like I had options. I really enjoyed it.
The overall story is just as good as Void Bastards. I always felt compelled to move forward.
The art direction is incredible and the graphics are just perfect for what it does. I love this game and will buy whatever this company puts out in the future.

I didn't want to negatively review this, given that I love Void Bastards. But I just do not like it, and there's very specific reasons for it. I guess I kind of expected an iteration on Void Bastards - given the name - and that's sort of what I got. The art style is great, but somehow it's just a sidestep from Void Bastards, nothing fundamental in its own right that says, hey, look at this game. It just says, "Hey, I'm cel shaded, here's some emissives". It probably should have a different name - maybe don't deliver something with a name that suggests it's part of a series. What I expected was an iteration, and what I got was a departure. Half of what made Void Bastards what it was - the humour - is also absent.
But what it really is amounts to a basic shooter with disappointing shooting mechanics that's been shoehorned into a roguelite format. Emphasis on the shooter part too, because that's even how they describe the difficulty - how experienced are you in first person shooters? But it's clunky, it's one of the clunkiest, most awkward shooters I've ever played. The way enemies are animated in the same style as Void Bastards doesn't suit how you're expected to play the game in this one. And it's just tedious. They kept a lot of the aesthetic and feel from Void Bastards, but failed to update it for the new type of gameplay.
Where Void Bastards janky shooting nature was forgivable given the game mechanics, it's far less forgivable here. Previously you were a victim of randomness, but here it's obvious there's very deliberate steps you need to take, it's far more skill based, and it's all predicated on a turn based system - that's what's adding the RNG to things. In Void Bastards (and most other roguelites), you're killed and you restart, lesson learned, but here that's just prolonged when you get down to a single character.
It's a drag. I played Void Bastards this morning and then came to play this and I'm just very disappointed. Not mad, just disappointed and refunding.
Great Characters, Lacking Substance
This game deserves a mixed review.
I have a feeling the dev team really likes to make rogulike shooters with a little twist. Void Bastards is a roguelike FPS that focuses on scavenge hunt, while Wild Bastards, the latest entry to the something Bastards series, is also a roguelike FPS, but this time it's an arena shootouts in an "outer space wild west" theme. The gunplay is decent. The game features a whopping thirteen playable characters, each with a distinct personality and a fun playstyle. However, this game not only misses the point of being a roguelike, but also the gameplay lacks variety considering its length. It's a shame because I really dig the character design, and the voice-acting is amazing.
Things I Like About Wild Bastards:
Thirteen Outlaws
To me, this is best part of the game.

I love the design of all thirteen Wild Bastards. Easily readable silhouette, unique gameplay, and solid voice acting make each of them very memorable for me.

The cartoon art style also plays a great role in portraying the characters. It's simplistic make each character stand out without adding too much unnecessary details.

Everyone has their own preferred weapons and specialty. The outlaws always go in pairs, so it is important to bunch the two that can cover each other back. For example, Judge may be great for single target damage, but he will struggle with armored enemies and close-ranged combats. Pair him up with someone that can stun or can go invisible on command would be wise.

Things I Dislike About Wild Bastards:
1.Many Aspects Lack Substance
Void Bastards has the same issue, but Wild Bastards doesn't seem to improve any of them.

This game misses the mark of what a roguelike supposed to be. Often time I feel like the game want to be qualified for that genre but is too afraid to commit. The game should boot you back to the beginning instead of restarting the current sector, but you can keep the outlaws you unlock. I know there's an extra mode specifically for this, but that's just a band-aid without resolving the issue.

The level structure is way too simple. The planet nodes are lackluster. There aren't many interesting events on the map. The special conditions on each planets are way too inconsequential. They offer little variation and can be largely ignored during your outlaw selection.

On the similar note, the campaign feels unnecessary drawn-out. It doesn't help that all three of the Chasteners don't evolve at all and the head of Chasten Family remains an instant-kill roadblock throughout the game.

Being a roguelike, the idea of "getting slightly stronger after each encounters" is vastly diluted. Yes you can earn up to ten Ace cards for each character, but the designated reward nodes in each sector are limited and randomized. It's hard to improve your ideal team if you only want to focus on a few characters.

Mods shouldn't be destroyed after warping to the next section. It feels bad when the mods you risk your life for simply vanish because you complete the sector. Instead, I think it would be better to convert the equipped mods into micro stat-boosts to the characters.

Relationship system is really lacking. It's similar to the one in Darkest Dungeon 2, but vastly toned down. Friendship only has two bonuses(one throw three random consumables and the other automatically use the partner's specialty when triggered), and Feuding only means that these two cannot go on a mission together. The former needs more different bonuses, and the latter should be removed and add some kind of double-edged effects to the two outlaws.
2. Other Complaints

It's hard to dodge enemies' projectiles. They travel way too fast, almost feel like an instant-hit.

The last part of the game is messy and the story feels out of place.

Loved Void Bastards and if you like that you'll like Wild Bastards- and while this isn't a sequel, its a similar game loop and comparisons will be made... this is by far an inferior game to Void Bastards.
Take this as a luke-warm recommendation, I still had a lot of fun with it.
Wild Bastards never really feels like you 'get going' - like in Void when you have some upgrades, if feels like you can start taking on riskier levels, whereas in Wild you're tied to the characters and their abilities and upgrades, which over time all your characters just sort of get better. By no means this is a bad thing, it's just different.
During levels, you're never pressed for time to complete them, in contrast again to Void where you always had an air limit timer - but this usually means you can take your time to cheese the enemies, by getting an angle where you can shoot their leg or something - which is often useful because some enemies can feel a bit 'hit-scan-ish' - there is a mechanic in the game similar to Void's pirates where you're being chased by three different 'princes' - early game these can be a bit of a pain, but by mid-late game they're trivialised (speaking as someone playing in hard) as just inconvenient encounters. The 4th and final prince that can arrive is apparently unbeatable but I never stayed around to find out - I was always 'done' by then anyway and onto the next section.
Part of the games strategy is selecting the right Wild Bastard(s) when dropping into a level to deal with whatever enemies are there, but in terms of strategy overall, this is about it. No management of fuel or food or anything else. There is a game mechanic where your team can be friends or foes - which seemed to run itself in my play though - I rarely had to use beans to resolve any disputes.
Depending on your choices, the game can feel quite difficult if you selected the wrong type of character for the enemies you're fighting - but then you also get the opposite, it can be too easy if you've selected the right match up. Sometimes levels last less than 60 seconds as you whip through them.
The characters are all varied, and I found them all useful one way or another. Some of the less conventional characters (i.e ones that don't have guns and shoot 'normally') I initially didn't like, I found to be some of the best and overpowered, while some of the more conventional characters (pew pew gun types) were actually more useful as 'buffer' characters, or characters you take along because of their passive skills (like healing or regenerating armour after a level or something like that)
Some decent voice acting, and a silly but entertaining loose story, no different to watching a cartoon at times.
Under 20 hours to complete the game on hard, and some replayability in here too. Overall, it's an ok game if you set your expectations below Void Bastards and look to buy when its about a tenner.

I do feel bad about giving this a negative rating, but really thinking about it honestly, it just baaaarely makes the cut.
The art style is great; especially the character designs, which feel straight out of some early 2000's cartoon like BTAS or Ben 10 in the best way possible. there's an intangible perfection to almost all of these characters and i would love to see more art of them.
Unfortunately, the gameplay is boring. imagine a level of classic doom that lasts two minutes but without any of the momentum or catharsis.
you're given a wide roster of playable characters that you can switch between in an instant, but you can only use two in one mission at a time and besides whatever their weapon does, the only unique mechanic each character has is an ult.
it's also a roguelike, but that doesn't really add much and in the main just means that you're playing through the same repetitive levels every time you die - (which, to be fair, won't be happening much anyway.)
it's disappointing because these characters, this setting, and this art style are all so good, and have so much potential if applied right. but to me, it doesn't hold up conceptually when the gameplay is as bland as it is.
is wild bastards a terrible game? no.
is it worth your time or money? ...probably not.
