This game is a lot of fun. Has Ori and the Blind Forest vibes. However, the final boss is ridiculous. If they patch the boss, I might change to an up vote.

The game looks very cute and the music is soothing and -im pretty sure- synced up to your movements a la DOOM, but the mechanisms of multi/combo movements are beyond the grasp of the coding. With both controller and keyboard+mouse, I have not been able to consistently utilize an intrinsic game mechanic. Until it is fixed the game is unplayable. I cannot make a proper judgement until then.

Solid 8/10, I loved the cute art style, and some of the characters I found charming(My opinion tho, you might hate everyone). The platforming feels really smooth, and it feels so good when you finally get the timing of the jumps right, knowing when to dash, and how to chain air attacks. I personally love the music, and the whole aesthetic of the game is the main thing that drew me in. The bosses aren't very hard, most I beat on my first or second try, the game wasn't as long as I thought(Bummer :/) but there's still a bunch of collectibles for you to find afterwards, if you want. The beginning really sets you into the world nicely, but if you're not used to platformers like this, you're gonna feel a difficulty spike during the bridge boss fight, the grappling mechanics do take get a bit to get used to, but they do feel a bit weird at times. Summary: Good game, not enough people to talk to.

This is like Hollow Knight but more platforming and less RPG. Movement is actually superior in Bo, while it lacks some polish here and there and has some crazy difficulty spikes. Defininitely worth checking out while waiting for Silksong.

Path of the Teal Lotus is a small hollow-knightish experience. The devs nailed the fundamentals with smooth and responsive controls and charming backgrounds and characters. Gameplay relies heavily on pogoing on enemies and props, both for platforming and fighting. It's very satisfying to manage a long sequence without touching the ground, or to keep pogoing on a boss while dodging its attacks. Level design is typical medtroidvania (obtain new skills to access new areas) with very little backtracking. Design is good, in that every zone is intentional and has a challenge to it (as opposed to other games where it's just an arbitrary sequence of platforms and enemies). DIfficulty is on the easy side but it doens't get boring at any point, and bosses are quite interesting. In summary, great game. It's a bit short (12h for me) and has very little replayability, but I'd recommend it for sure over any other game in the endless metroidvania clone market.

I wanted to love this game, but with its inconsistent design I unfortunately cannot. In the end, I didn't really enjoy my time with the game past the first couple hours. I'll start off with the good. - The game's artstyle is beautiful, especially on an OLED screen - It's emphasis on aerial combat and movement is really unique in its genre and is used pretty effectively, too - It makes good use of its Japanese setting and lore And now, the design decisions I found baffling, and at times frustrating... - As other reviews mention, the boss battles overstay their welcome by having too much HP. I feel that reducing them by 25% would be a fair compromise, since you're already on the path to winning by the time you can hit 75% of their health - Darumas are really underwhelming in combat. They use the same resource that healing does, so it's easy to disincentivise them. Their damage output also didn't feel like it kept up with my staff damage, even when charged up - Bafflingly, the Midori Forest doesn't have a fast travel point, but the main hub has 2 that are 20 seconds apart - It's possible to enter a late game area with an easy skip (bypassing the need for an ability to be unlocked), which the game even calls out. This is really cool! Unfortunately, the NPC at the end of this area needs this ability to be escorted. This isn't too bad because there's a fast travel point nearby. Unfortunately, again, it's possible to get this far without unlocking fast travel, resulting in 10+ minutes of backtracking... - The game's intended path will have you repeatedly ping-ponging from the west side of the map to the east to progress. This is fine, but really brought down the feeling of exploration for me - There's no ability to pin locations on the map, like collectibles. There is an equippable omori charm late in the game to do this, but I would've gotten more satisfaction out of revisiting my own pins throughout the game - The games achievement descriptions will spoil the surprise of some of the upcoming bosses in the ice caverns - The ice caverns feature a mandatory White Palace-level platforming section with very few checkpoints. I feel something this challenging should've been optional - The game's economy is weird. Each vendor will require multiple currencies, but the majority of the time you'll either have 0 or an abundance of the special ones they require - A late game boss has a lot of wonky vertical platforming with some weird checkpointing - The grappling ability is really inconsistent, and often times you'll hook onto a nearby point instead of the one you're actually aiming for (often into a spike wall, no less). Many of these also require you to be at the height of your jump, leaving little to no room for error - The games intro has a whopping 6 splash screens. These can all be skipped, but it is a minor annoyance that adds up over time There's really a great game here, buried under all the rough edges. Perhaps future patches can improve things, but unfortunately a lot of the pain points are intrinsic to the game's design.

Overall review: 7/10 I was recommended to check out this game during my Nine Sols streams and ended up getting it during one of the Steam sales. I wasn't sure what to expect after Nine Sols setting such a high bar, but I knew I was getting myself into a metroidvania/platformer/puzzle type game. The art style is cute and the music is cozy. One would think the game is like that throughout, but the platforming isn't really for beginners. It gets a bit crazy since new mechanics get introduced well into half past the game. Mechanics sometimes feel a bit janky and makes the platforming difficult. If you ever played Hollow Knight, platforming feels like the
WP
. Hitboxes sometimes are also a bit weird, so it feels unfair in some cases. The bosses were easy and there isn't too much story. There aren't too many areas to explore, and I think you could complete the game in about 10-15 hrs. I'm hesitant to strongly recommend this game (especially after Nine Sols), but if you do end up playing, good luck!
