I really want to recommend this game, but right now, at .3.3 it's just not there yet. There's content, the bugs are manageable, it's just... It still needs more work before it's a real game. I'm confident it'll get there in a few months, in a few releases. It's got good bones, this is just a victim of early release.

Very fun game solo and multi-player! I like that you can customize your gameplay to be extremely difficult with zombie waves or super easy if you just want to chill and explore or build. Very happy that this game has controller support too.

For my friend and I this game is both incredibly fun yet boring and frustrating at the same time. We have a lot of fun exploring and building but at any minor inconvenience we question why we spent money on it. Like many are saying, it needs more content and refinement before it can live up to its potential. Currently it feels like a $20 Roblox game.

The concept is great, the first few hours are fun, but after that, the gameplay becomes repetitive and frustrating. The machine you’re supposed to survive with becomes more of a burden than a feature. Needs refinement, especially in combat, performance, and meaningful progression.
Gameplay
The central premise—surviving on a giant machine—is cool in theory, but the gameplay doesn’t live up to it. You don’t drive the machine or do anything significant with it; instead, it limits your movement. The map is generated around the machine, and straying too far resets you.
The core gameplay loop gets stale fast:

Visit all POIs

Loot chests

Collect mandatory resources and blueprints

Every X's night go back and defend the machine

Repeat
The combat is [strike]shit[/strike] bad. Its bad. After a while enemies pile with abilities that are just annoying. Like one zombie can spin for an eternity and than you can kill him because he's just invincible while spinning.
The difficulty also just scales the damage and that means that you need more resources for more weapons, because they break quickly. Blocking is also useless against multiple enemies. Tools are also like that: They break quickly, even the best you can craft.
Every X's night you need to defend this giant piece of metal junk. You will build cannons as defense because they are the most effective. All other defenses have one ore more problems: awful targeting, no or too small AOE, or ridiculous reload times.
The rewards for the mandatory quests are also stupid. ONE invisibility drink for 10 seconds? Why?
Graphic & Music
Well, they are heavily stylized and look like 2000s. That wouldn’t be a problem if the game were well-optimized, but performance is rough. Also after playing the graphics are somewhat tone deaf, but maybe thats only a problem for me.
As for the music - I can’t remember any of it, which says enough (played 5/6 weeks ago).
Bugs
We didn’t run into major game-breaking bugs, but some issues are just stupid.

Why don't have the lights on the machine collision?? You can even get up there via a ladder!

Most of the walls are just suggestions: You could bug yourself anywhere with enough patiance.

In last update I played at least the glitching through the machine was fixed...

Story
None I guess? There is the element of "We need to survive" but I do not even know if your companion that gives you the quests WANT to survive. He's just too nonchalant about it all. Well maybe he know that there is no way to die and he could just ditch the stupid machine if bad comes to worse.
Also: The machine is not explained in the slightest. It just does not make sense, there are no tracks for machines like that or any machine debris in the world. It looks like this machine is unique but it is just too gigantic for that. I just don't know how this machine fits in this western themed game. There are even railroad tracks, that are much more efficient to transport stuff.
Coop
There are minor problems like lag and rubberbanding but nothing too broken. I would have played this game never, EVER alone.
Final Thoughts
I don’t understand the “overwhelmingly positive” reviews. The concept is the only thing carrying this game. I would love to love this game because I love survival but it’s just not there.
If you could farm on the machine, or actually drive it more, it would be awesome. But as it stands, it’s just a big useless base that restricts you. And there’s no real reason in the story for it to even exist.
Make the machine matter.
Hopefully future updates will fix some of these core problems. If they do, I’ll gladly come back and update my review. Until then, I can’t recommend it.

A solid foundation with potential for greatness.
Survival machine is obviously in its infancy as a game however the game has a very promising concept and a good foundation. With another year or so of updates this game could be seriously good, and with further support after that could carve out a strong niche in the over saturated zombie genre.
Good points:
- Nice visuals and great art direction
- Solid combat and base building
- Easy to understand and jump into
Things to work on:
- Gameplay loop gets repetitive after an hour or so straight.
- Lack of automated defences, which makes zombie attacks pretty difficult for a solo player and makes building more than one defence weapon pointless
- Guns are weak and zombies get too close to you to use them properly
- Zombie attack nights happen too often (maybe do one once every 4 nights?)
- Defence building options are limited
- Repairing a wooden structures (walls etc) costs more than just building a new one
- Movement options are limited and could use expanding (Slide, roll etc)
- Sometimes when i pause the game and tab out i fall through the world and get teleported back to the machine
- Large groups of zombies are basically impossible to kill as a solo
- Zombies are too fast
- One of the blueprint chest generations is inside of a rock formation that i had to clip inside to get
From a solo perspective its clear the game is balanced for multiplayer, with a few friends a lot of things that bug me wouldnt be present however as a solo there are a few balancing and QOL changes that would really help to improve the experience. The gameplay loop can also use diversifying as its very simplistic and repetitive which makes it VERY hard to sit down and play this game for more than an hour straight. However i still enjoy the game and am really looking forward to future updates.
If you are interested in the game but do not want to get in on the bottom floor definitely wishlist this game as there is a ton of potential.

To many bugs. The horde aspect of the game is severely broken. I have to run z's over spike traps 4x to kill 1 z. 1 z. Just one. They climb up, and somehow pop up on top of my roof without being able to actually get in, etc. It's like a bad mobile port. I wouldn't buy and wait till it's out of Early Access to take another look.
