In what other game can I feel like I'm playing Everhood without playing it? It's not a Rhythm game at all, but rather a "Rhythm" based dodge game, where you don't have to have any rhythm at all. Some songs are good, most are a bit odd. I almost experienced all songs just by playing for 40 minutes. In conclusion just play Everhood instead, it's the same principle except more fleshed out.

A very strange rhythm, if you can call it a rhythm game... its more a avoidance game with beats then a rhythm game to me... (I mean you got to catch the note but you can't even touch them anyways)

It's okay for the price however it doesn't really follow the beat, it's more similar to Geometry Dash than a rythm game.

as far as rhythm games go this sets the bar reaaaaal low. the gameplay is honestly very unique, but the execution, shoddy graphics, poor music and badly mapped stages holds the concept back allot.

This is a great game - it's fun to play and has a unique art style that stands out from many other games. Try the demo and decide for yourself though, as the full game is more of what the demo gives you. (Be warned that the full game's later stages on NORMAL difficulty are more hectic than any of the demo's stages on HARD difficulty though.) Additionally, both the demo and the full game run flawlessly on the Steam Deck (LCD).

Not a rhythm game! Music based parkour game, yes. Kind of like a runner game with obstacles. You know, if you have played Everhood, this is like that. It's fun! Especially worth it if you grab it while it is on sale.

Target Audience: Those wanting to try something extremely new in rhythm mechanics Summary: The problem with Beat Souls is simple: it's a nice concept taking the rhythm elements from games like Everhood and applying it to a traditional rhythm game, and it has several ideas that have potential. When the game hits that potential at some of the higher difficulties and makes me think that with the right adjustments, the game could be worth the price of admission. But the game has a few fatal flaws that keeps me from recommending it overall. The game's music selection, by DJ music cow, doesn't do enough to really stand out in the big picture. Not to say that the artist doesn't have talent, but when 95% of the songs are by the same artist, you aren't going to get a variety, even if they do different genres. It doesn't help that the songs and the actual structure sometimes don't match up at times: where the beat and the notes on the screen don't make any sense. In fact, some of the songs just sorta abruptly end at times, not making sense at all and actually feeling like the level part is just sorta....there. Several more rounds of refinement were needed for about half of the field here. It doesn't help that the BPM at times seems to be....arbitary? Like in terms of how the song and the speed of your character is. It also doesn't help that the game decides that pastel bright colors is the best way to get across information across the screen. To say that the game is a little bit hard on the eyes, especially with all the action on the screen is a problem, and that's even before a twitch/youtube algorithm hits it (because it does NOT like this game). In the end, it's a game that may be worth looking out for if it gets a bigger library of more diverse songs that are more refined, but for now it's a pass. Stream Footage: https://youtu.be/D5pIr3NC6xs Lists: Positives:

Basic gameplay can be exciting especially at harder difficulties, and when the game hits the right song with the right difficulty it shows its potential.
Nice visuals in terms of character design and drawing specifically.
Combination of mechanics is interesting and stands out in the field.
Negatives:

Lack of music quality and variety in artists/genre kill any momentum the game could have. It's a bad situation when you have short versions of songs, and even a song is repeated in the 45 level mix.
Song structure with notes at times can seem completely random, not following any beat of the song and can feel like it's just the background music of a level as opposed to a central piece.
Color Palette absolutely can be blinding at times, and with no options to mess with it will be a problem especially for those who have trouble concentrating with over stimulation.
Question the need for the blue/yellow switch. It can work, but with so many other things to worry about in the game and a need for simplicity for rhythm games to work, it can feel like overkill.
Just not enough songs in the long haul. Should have used free open source music to help add to the collection of levels.
