At first glance, the game's visuals are absolutely stunning, complemented by a soundtrack and sound design that create a warm, cozy atmosphere. However, as the final act unfolds, the experience becomes noticeably clunky and frustrating, dampening the initial charm.

Quirky platforming game with PS1 graphics and a frog grapple-gun offers a simple, fun adventure. Only wrench in the game is that finishing the achievements for the game requires hours of grinding coins. I normally don't care about achievements, they're really just useful for measuring progress, but its a bit odd that a game that was otherwise free and easy with its design suddenly got really obnoxious on one small point - as if just to spite anyone with OCD.

I don't like writing review for games I dropped or that I haven't beaten yet, but oh darn, this game has potential and a part of me likes what it does and wants to continue playing, but the other part is telling me to just stop playing. So, where do I begin with. Well, this seems to go for a hybrid puzzle-platformer as well a 3D Platformer (with less limited movement). Puzzle-platformers tend to have very limited options of movement, and it relies more on puzzling. Here, there is puzzling, but at the same time, there are ways to skip portions of the level if you are skilled enough, and I have to applaud this part, making the levels be able to be "cheesed" is a hella a fun. The biggest problem relies on how often your frog gun, ahem... Frogun, fails to connect to the wall you just sticked the tongue with, which, sadly, it's an absurd amount of times. Maybe it's because I'm not "playing the intended" way by trying to skip the levels, but, I'm still trying to use the game mechanics, using the tongue on nearby objects and walls, and still, so many times, it fails to connect. I also found out a way to exploit some stages by constantly wall-climbing, and managing to reach on top of platforms I wasn't suppose to. Again, I think this is a lot of fun and gives the player a lot of freedom to do the stages the way they want, well, if the tongue didn't had problems connecting half of the time. Outside of that, you have several-types of completion objectives per stage. Collect 2 (Chaos) Emeralds, collect 1 note (that seems to give a bit more lore to the somewhat simplistic story, which the story being simple is totally fine), a skull that tends to be located in a more "challenging" area, beating the stage quickly, beating the stage even quicker, and collecting all coins. Thankfully, you don't need to do ALL of them at once, usually I would pick up everything on a stage and then go for finishing the stage quickly, which I found the gameplay loop to be the most fun (explore the stage, know its design, and finally, try to reach to the end as fast as possible by taking shortcuts). Coins can be used to unlocked some cosmetics as well some artworks on a shop (located in the map, per world). Each world will increase the amount of things on the shop, it seems. In the map, there's also a couple treasure chests that require some of those completion objectives from the stages. Each chest requires a certain amount, but I never had trouble with them since I would always aim for 100% on each stage. There's also bosses here and there, they are okay, simple, but effective. I did had a couple times on the first boss that it failed to register my shots (grabbing an enemy with the tongue, and shooting at the boss), however. The lock-on mechanic is subpar at best. It tends to not lock-on very well, and you end up using the tongue on something else. Trying to pull switches, grab certain objects, while trying to do the speedrun challenges is just not fun. The game also fails to register pulls from levers for when you are too nearby, but this is possibly intentional. Lastly, some stages include a race-minigame with another character that you have to beat him everytime, losing means you go back to the stage. This is fine, but you have to collect EVERYTHING alongside the race, and, I didn't like that. Some stages let you bypass this race if you are careful enough with your platforming, but other stages it may not be as easy to do so. The stage I dropped was one where two coins were in a place that was impossible to get without triggering the race. If you are skilled enough, you might be able to complete the race then go back to the start of the stage and collect everything, but some stages may not be possible to do so. I definitely do not like to drop a game (and even review it) without at least playing through completion (doesn't need to be 100%), but oh man, I'm really not enjoying my time with this one. I read some negative reviews for Frogun Encore and it seems that some of the things from the first game got fixed but there's now other problems plaguing that game. I can't really say since I did not play Encore, but I don't really plan in buying it either.

The game is good, with fun visuals and interesting gameplay mechanics BUT, towards the end of the game where levels become harder the mechanics become noticeably clunkier thus making them less enjoyable and making certain levels feel like a massive chore. I still recommend it because I did enjoy my time playing it but something for people to consider before purchasing.

It's a nice platformer. There's some issues I think hold it back from being a perfect game, like some levels having very plain skyboxes making depth perception a struggle and the overly slow speed in aim mode, but overall it's a good game and worth the sale price.

There are a ton of good things about this game, such as music, aesthetic, humor, characters, etc., but as far as actual gameplay is concerned, there's a lot of tiny things that add up to a generally frustrating experience. It might be my own fault for going for 100%, but even going through a level casually just feels boring and a bit unfair with how enemy hitboxes work. Also some of the bosses, including the final boss, are just NOT fun to fight.

Frogun is an interesting platformer that allows you to use a grappling hook shaped like a frog. With this in mind, I was expecting some unique gameplay elements that utilized this feature very well, and while there were a few. I had some issues with the gameplay that almost made the game rather tedious to play. That’s not to say that I didn’t hate the game but there are some issues with its core gameplay.
Pros and Cons
Pros

Platforming is fun for the first bit
Lots of collectibles
The soundtrack is excellent
Art style looks very nice, and the levels are detailed
Cons

Platforming in the later levels gets very clunky
You can’t fix the camera to move forward or backward, which can make platforming a bit difficult sometimes
Hit detection is terrible
Aiming with the Frogun on occasion can be a bit difficult
Bosses all felt very slow and unfun to fight
The collectibles aren’t that fun or really worth going for

Story
The story starts out with Ranata, a young girl who has been waiting for her parents to return from an expedition. However, they have been gone for at least two days so Ranata decides to grab her parent's trusty gadget the Frogun. The story for Frogun is straightforward. there is not much to discuss here, as the game wants you to enjoy its gameplay. There are only three major characters in the story: Ranata, her Frogun, who can talk, and this boy named Jack, who will race her on a level of each world. There are some minor characters, as the bosses have some dialogue but nothing major.
Gameplay
If I am going to review Frogun properly, I should at least start with the game's main gimmick, the Frogun. There are two things that will happen to Ranata when she uses the Frogun, if it’s a small enemy, she can pick them up and throw them at enemies to kill them. Or if it’s a wall, a mushroom to bounce on, or a large enemy. Ranata will go towards the object, if it’s an enemy, she will kill it upon impact. If I had to compare Frogun to a game in particular, it would be like the Caption Toad games, with some minor elements of Kirby and The Legend of Zelda’s hook shot throwing in. The gameplay for the game is fun for the first bit and I found it to be very simple but I will get back to this part later. During the levels, you will mostly be going from point A to point B, collecting coins and other things that the level has. There are a lot of collectibles in the levels, you will mainly be finding coins, but you can also find at least two green gems, an obsidian skull, and some notes. This makes the game rather a collectathon, so those who enjoy these types of games, may find some fun in the game. Although, I will also be going back to the collectibles part later in this review again, as I also have issues with them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3456019765 So now I can talk about the major issue with Frogun, which has to be the platforming. The platforming and level design are good for the first four worlds, and I enjoyed going through them. However, I have a mix of issues with platforming, the first thing I will talk about is platforming in the later levels. It can get a little clunky and it all has to do with the camera, which in my opinion is the biggest enemy in the game. You can move it but you can only move the camera around you, up and down, and diagonally. But you can’t zoom in or out, which makes platforming a bit difficult when you have to time your jumps and move the camera to get a better aim. You are given some air time but the game won’t give you much as you will need to move the camera and get a good aim on what you are trying to latch onto. This also goes onto another issue I had, which is that the hit detection is sometimes also wonky, as enemies will damage you a good few inches apart. This also applies to the mushrooms that you can jump off of as well. Also, if let's say the object is an inch above you, you won’t grab onto it. Aiming with the Frogun can also be a bit difficult as well since you have to time your shots when jumping off of things or whatnot. At the end of each world, there will be a boss fight for you to go and fight, however, they are very slow. With nothing really interesting going on in the fight, I just end up waiting for the boss to stop so I can hit it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3456023860 The final issue I want to talk about is the collectibles, as this is just a huge issue all around. There are coins in the levels that I mentioned before but there is a certain amount and you are graded on how many you collect at the end of each level. The levels in the worlds also have minor objectives for you to complete but you can’t 100% complete the level on your first try. You are graded on finding all the coins, the two green gems, Obsidian Skull, the hidden notes you can find in the levels, and, how fast you beat the level. There are three major problems with this, my first issue is that these collectibles, aren’t worth it. As the game doesn’t give you a reason to collect them and finding them is not rewarding. That’s not to say the coins don’t have a use, you can use them to buy hats which are cosmetic options. Not only do you have to replay levels to get 100% completion on them, but you may need to play a few of them more than twice to afford all the hats. The notes give you lore but the world you are in is not at all interesting, which makes the notes not really worth it, or the two green gems or the Obsdion Skull. Not only that but you are also in a constant battle of game speeds as well, since you have to collect all the coins in that level, then replay again so you can 100%. Also rushing through the levels is difficult as the game locks you into its speed, which limits movement options. To me, this just makes Frogun not worth 100% completing or really playing through.
Graphics and Performance
The game's graphics are very nice and colorful, I loved how the levels were designed. I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50, and 16 GB of RAM, I had no issues with the game's performance and it ran well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3456019948
Final Verdict
I don’t normally want to put games down and I do my best to complete any game I start, even ones that I hate but I can’t complete Frogun. The game started off very strong with a decent difficulty but the later levels, the controls, and the other issues make me not want to play. Had there been a lock-on system, that locks you on the target, so something like how they do it in the Devil May Cry games, that may of helped a bit. I am having a hard time recommending this game, which is sad because I do believe there is charm to the game.
Looking for more reviews like this one?
