Would I call this a bad game? Not in particular, no. Would I say it's a good game, though?
Also, not particularly. I'd say solid 6.5 out of 10, maybe 7 on a good day.
I'll start with the bad, just because honestly, if you like slower horror/thriller games, I'd say it's worth playing at some point.
First things first, the movement mechanics are pretty janky. If you're just walking it's not too terrible, but once you start sprinting the controls start acting a little strange, as if sometimes you're trying to dodge an invisible corner instead of simply turning. There was definitely a few moments I got screwed out of a QTE (quick time event) where you have to hide because the character went in the wrong direction, and it's a little frustrating when you can literally watch it happen but can do nothing about it.
Secondly, don't even bother trying to pass other NPCs if you're in any form of confined space. It feels like in this game there's an invisible barrier around you that will stops you like a foot away from any walls or people, and if, say, you're in a room and want to pass through a door way, NPC who's with you is standing in the doorway & it looks like plenty of room to pass on either side. There most definitely isn't enough room, and thanks to those broken movement mechanics, you WILL BOTH be wedged in there. A few times in the first two acts I ended up reloading from the main menu because neither of us could move at all.
Third, yes, the faces can be quite emotionless at times. I personally find it pretty odd, because it feels exclusive to certain characters. There's a couple of them that it feels like you can see so much in their features and it's a captivating scene to watch, while others fall so painfully flat I hated a few of them.
There are these little puzzles in the game that I'd honestly recommend looking up how to properly do (not just outright the answer of course) but they weren't explained well at all in the game which felt a bit unfair.
Those are honestly my only complaints, and there's definitely positives to it as well. I played the easiest difficulty for my first playthrough because I wanted to enjoy it, not be stressed about saving everyone so it was definitely more forgiving through the game. I'd messed up on two "keep calm" events and three QTEs but they weren't major ones and had no real repercussions thankfully, managed to save all the survivors.
There's a couple in the beginning you can't do anything to save, so don't stress when it happens. There's also one more "person" you can't save, either.
This game definitely focuses not only on your overall decisions but also your relationships with each other as the story progresses. Some events are altered if you're in bad standing with your group, and vice versa. I personally enjoy it simply because it really makes you think about the impact of literally EVERYTHING you say and do.
You cannot reload easily from the menu so if you mess up & autosave hits, you're screwed.
It definitely feels reminiscent of Saw, as the killer forces you into a variety of traps and you find ways to survive while you're trying to figure out who the mastermind is. (You guys do figure out who it is really early into the game, and I'm pretty sure someone even guesses it right in the first act) so most of the game is ultimately just everyone trying to survive & escape.
Honestly, I did have a lot of fun playing this game. The jump scares got me a few times, story was decent, gameplay mechanics can be a struggle at times and there would definitely be some buffering moments, so frankly, it's worth playing, but maybe not at it's current $40 pricetag. I beat it in a single day so it's not a very long game, which isn't much of a complaint, but it unfortunately just runs a little too buggy to cost more than, I'd say, $20-$25. It's still a really good and enjoyable game, but I feel like it should run more smoothly or at least have slightly better running mechanics for $40 because it was honestly rough at a few moments.
