The Game That Beck Deserved.
Berserk Boy has very obvious influences. Almost painfully. However... Berserk Boy plays that to its absolute benefit. The dashing feels incredible to play, the change in playstyles is designed with clear love for the multitude of influences it has, and the soundtrack?! Pure chiptune DnB goodness.
So why the title? Well, quite frankly, the main influence I see is, of course, Mighty No. 9. Never mind the fact that your main attack mechanic is, of course, dashing, this feels like the game that Keiji Inafune promised us all those years ago. Your main attacks? Dashing. Your main forms of movement? Dashing. Secret hunting? Dashing. It's all here, in bite-sized levels that whet your appetite and leave you wanting more, because every piece this puzzle adds is a new addition that turns this game from solid to great. And I sorely wish MN9 got this. Alas...
This game does, however, stand on its own merits as a love letter to the series it's influenced by while introducing us to its own world at the same time. And I, for one, am excited for Berserk B.I.T.S, as well.
If you had any trepidation about buying Berserk Boy, get rid of it. It is very much worth your time, even if the voice acting is more than a lil' clunky at times.
Go Berserk!!
A somewhat sloppy and badly designed imitation of the great Mega Man series. If you have played that, imagine a game from that series only trying to be funny but written for six year olds, with weird mazelike levels with collectable doohickeys hidden everywhere. They're not fun to find, especially if you're going for 100%. There's an annoying scoring system which is not explained, and the characters are unbelievably foolish and unlikable. Definitely not worth your time.
