This game is Paper Mario if Nintendo. realized they shouldn't be overcomplicating the battle system. 10/10 if you like Paper Mario Thousand Year Door or Paper Mario original.

I LOVED this game from start to finish! Despite the game being glitchy (Make sure you SAVE OFTEN) this game is packed with a load of charm, music that I keep humming to myself, a fun game play loop, and characters with dynamics and personalities I adore, I'm WISHING there will be more stories to go through with them one day! Praying one day they make a DLC with the cut content fully implemented ^^

I really enjoyed this game! It's really cute, fun, and funny. The visuals were a delight from start to finish and same goes for the writing. I tried to 100% it, and sadly that's where the big negative comes in. This game is REALLY buggy. I never got the turn order change option to work, several of the boons seemed nonfunctional, and quest rewards being bugged out resulted in me not getting my achievements. For the most part, this didn't really impact my enjoyment of the game except for the 4-5 times the game softlocked itself. I played it exclusively on my steam deck, and this game really stuck out as a good casual game to play during my breaks at work or before bed. I adored the characters and the music, it really just comes down to functionality. As a huge paper mario fan, this scratched the same itch as bug fables (which I was so happy to see referenced in the game!), and that's exactly what I wanted out of it!

The core components are all there - quests, characters, writing, battle mechanics - but they are held together by glue and a ribbon. Navigating the menu's is incredibly clunky, switching between WASD and arrow keys seemingly at random. The inventory is small and every time you get an item while it is full, you are forced to throw something on the ground, instead of just being able to decline the new item. I have gone through at least three major sequence breaks in the story, simply because the game never expects you to backtrack ever (like, skipping half of an entire chapter because I just used quicktravel). If you do anything slightly out of the ordinary, the game breaks and softlocks. Late in the game you get a badge that allows you to deal damage to enemies if you block their attacks. I ended a battle using this and was subsequently softlocked as the normal battle menu and the pause menu did not disappear during the level-up sequence. And to top it all off, the partner system is broken beyond belief. The usual combat order is you - partner - enemies. You can select to put your partner first, but this doesn't actually change anything other than skipping your action on turn one. If your partner uses the block action, then this counts as the enemies' attack for this round. If you use the block action but your partner doesn't, then the enemies get to attack you twice in one round. Allies can get special bonuses if you unlock enough of their skills, but for some reason the second partner you unlock (Yagi) has his attack up bonus applied three times instead of once? I still can not tell if this is intentional or not. As a lot of other reviews will tell you, this game could be brilliant if it was just polished up even once.

A game that starts off gorgeously whimsical and charming but unfortunately appears to be *ahem* half baked in it's implementation. Controls don't feel natural, the damage you deal and receive doesn't level well, and bugs. Not what you'd expect from something that's so visually pretty. I wish they could have done more with it, it's a shame.
