As others have noted, Spirit of the Samurai is a great idea bogged down by flawed execution.
It was was intriguing enough to entice me out of my abandonment of gaming to give it a try when it came on sale. I loved the idea and artistic direction of this game. The stop-motion aesthetic was a really neat idea, though the more fluid movements in the cutscenes disrupted the stop-motion feel of it. The feudal-era horror setting was an enjoyable throwback to days of playing Onimusha.
Unfortunately, the janky controls ruined the game. Movements like downing a life potion or switching to using the bow took so long that enemies could land hits easily during the animation. Turning when an enemy moves behind you also involves dropping your guard, moving the stick, and resuming guard if you want to defend. The process is so slow that, again, you're easily hit during the process. The controls were fine when facing one enemy, but became cumbersome when facing two or more - especially when they were on opposite sides of you.
The difficulty factor ramps up pretty quickly. Things started one-shotting (one hit takes one of your life balls, meaning three hits and you're dead and back to the last checkpoint) not too far in. The biggest problem with this was that it was impossible to consume life potions to offset this, because the animation to drink would start and an enemy would strike. So, basically, trying to drink a life potion had the opposite effect and cost one or two life orbs instead because of being open to attack.
The whole thing became such a chore that I just deleted it and watched a playthrough instead. I'm glad I got it on a deep sale or I'd be really torqued that I was beyond the window for requesting a refund. This game has pretty much reaffirmed my decision to overall stop playing games.

Despite its flaws, I’d recommend The Spirit of The Samurai. The depth of the combat and the intriguing characters kept me engaged and leading to a positive experience.

Summary
A friend recommended this game and I really wanted to try to enjoy it but I really couldn't. I've played the game all the way through and it was more frustrating than fun. I enjoyed the art style but the controls and gameplay were frustration for me. It felt really unpolished, it didn't really have a great feel to it.
Pros:
- Unique art style
- Cutscenes are cool
- Has some good horror elements
Cons:
- Really poor controls - feels super janky and doesn't register input at times
- Poor platforming - related to janky controls, gets frustrating if your inputs don't register
- Level layout is poor - you can't tell what's foreground/background and what you can't touch at times
- Annoying run back - when you die, the last save point is pretty far with no short cuts
- Poor optimization - not sure if there's a memory leak but if you run the game too long, you start losing frames
- Poor enemy design - the game isn't difficult, the enemies just hit like a truck no matter what. They're more annoying to fight than enjoyable, particularly the ones toward the end
