There's a lot of great things in this game, from thematics and music to overall systems. The issue comes in towards the middle of Act 2, where progression starts being locked behind challenges that run counter to those systems. If all these challenges were for legendary items or gold, there'd be no issue, but when skill points are being locked behind challenges like "Complete this level without fielding any units" in a game entirely built around fielding units to hold lanes, you start running into an issue. You can leave those points on the table and push forward, but the game continues to scale and those points become sorely missed. Some of these challenges include not using war tactics (Buffs you unlock for your units as they level up) not using your own hero's passive skills (Unlocked from investing in specific stats to break points), and not using active skills associated with specific gear slots. Again, if all these challenges that run counter to the systems as implemented were for trivial rewards and achievements it'd be one thing, but they actively hamper character progression and cause you to be weaker as you progress through the campaign. In the end you're incentivized to grind out levels dozens of times to fish for upgrades that let you dps check levels, grind out gold to over-level your troops, and overcome those challenges through brute force instead of any measure of tactics or skill. On the whole, there's still plenty to praise about this game, so if the above doesn't seem like an issue to you, and the overall idea sounds appealing, it may still be well worth your time to give it a try. I personally can't recommend it however, because the challenge system detracted so much from my enjoyment of the game.
