If I weren't bad with words, I'd have written this better, but you get what you can get: -Because soldiers have names, faces and entire bios, you actually feel responislbe for real people and not just "some NPCs" which messes with your emotions and feelings (this is a good thing, in this context). -The game lets you know very clearly that you are not main characters, you are soldiers stuck in a foreign country, trying to get home and any mistake will cost you dearly. The entire secondary plot with Langer's survivor's guilt and him coming to terms with it is pretty emotional. The ending was the first thing to make me cry in three years. -This game has pretty accurate potrayal of all the atrocities commited by the Red and White armies during the Civil War. Many games would choose to dumb down these horrid acts to not potentially make the game too violent/graphic. -As someone who really isn't fond of strategy games, I found the gameplay easy to understand and enjoyable.

Immense care was put into the development of this game and it shows. The art direction, historical fiction story, and soldier profiles all have depth and love. The game-play itself is a fun real-time squad tactics game that is well made. The journey itself is worth every minute!

Nice campaign and in theory good mechanics but the battle gameplay is terrible, can't take cover, you shoot for 5 minutes at one enemy, and just feels bad

Wow - what a game. The story is engaging, the cutscenes are incredibly made, the artwork and sound design fit the theme perfectly and the music completely seals the incredible experience whether it be on the map or during the final battle. You will be forced to make extremely difficult choices - Do you risk your soldiers to help a civilian village under attack? Is this really your war to fight? Not all your men will return home, and these are not simply NPCs - each and every soldier has their own name, photo, backstory and personality during ingame events. Whether it be because you forgot to take out the enemy artillery before assaulting a fortress or because your field gun missed their shot on the enemy tank, there will be someone who's bio won't update after everyone returns home. For those who complain about the one-sided nature of the Reds being demonized - you are playing from the perspective of their enemy. You might not have asked for this war, but you are forced to fight it if you want to return home. 10/10. The amount of love the devs put into this game is easily visible - I wish every modern gaming company could learn.

Enjoyable game that has become very absorbing! While it's true how the missions become harder by adding more and more guards like other reviewers have commented, I find it a good challenge to avoid getting complacent. It's a good game that can't be rushed, and is often better in short bursts. There are some glitches that could do with being fixed in future updates but for now can be worked around.

It changed my attitude to tactical strategy games. Interesting story, good fights, a bit annoying base-managment.

An Impressive Blend of Strategy, Morality, and Survival The Last Train Home delivers an exceptional gaming experience that feels like a unique cross between Frostpunk and Soldiers: Heroes of World War II / Men of War. It brilliantly combines the intense, pressure-driven resource and time management mechanics of Frostpunk with the tactical squad-based strategy and emotional weight of Men at War. From the very beginning, the game challenges your ability to make hard choices—not just in terms of logistics and planning, but also in how you handle your crew and the missions ahead. Every decision matters. A single squad loss isn’t just a minor setback; it can have significant ripple effects that change the outcome of your campaign. That level of consequence makes each battle feel tense and meaningful. What really elevates The Last Train Home, though, is its storytelling. The campaign is tightly written and emotionally charged, drawing you into the struggles of your characters. The voice acting and overall sound design add another layer of immersion, helping to bring the human side of the conflict to life. Whether you’re facing bitter cold, dwindling supplies, or moral dilemmas, the narrative never lets you forget that the people on your train are more than just units—they're survivors, each with a story to tell. If you enjoy games that demand careful planning, emotional investment, and moral decision-making, The Last Train Home is a must-play. It's a rare title that successfully balances strategy and story in a way that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
