As of March 2025, Road 96 isn’t just a game—it’s a reflection of our times. In a world where corruption and systemic challenges often cast shadows on our daily lives, this game emerges as a bold reminder that even amid chaos, the power to choose your destiny remains in your hands.
In an era marked by widespread disillusionment and corruption, Road 96 offers an escape that is as thoughtful as it is exhilarating. Its narrative mirrors the complexity of modern society, capturing the spirit of rebellion and the quest for personal freedom. Every twist and decision in the game is a metaphor for overcoming the societal challenges we face, making it a timely and resonant experience.

I played through this game over 7 times. It is fantastic and graphically stunning. The story of this game is also amazing with Road 96: Mile 0 also being a fun game. 10/10.

Right from the beginning it sets you in a happy world with no real lore setup and tells you to get invested in changing the world when I dont see anything to change. This story and characters are so shallow. BS throughout without giving me any reason to have any investment, What makes this an authoritaian goverment? Because it seems like everyone has a lot of freedom to do whatever they fuck they want whenever they want. Show some kind of plot as to why these people need to escape. Instead there's just vague refernece to a bunch of people dying in the past as the true cause to everyones misery of every waking moment 10 years later. Why are all the protaganists runaway teens and why all the talk about voting when its just "because its the other person and better"? they give no reason as to why they need to cross a border in the first place. Where are they going across the border that its so better? wtf is across the border paradise, or shangri la? why even vote if your running away? Another highly rated piece of shit that dumbasses must enjoy. As a 90s kid, the premise of this taking place in the 90s excited me, but there are no 90s vibes or references at all
tl:dr mini games are pathetic, this is basically a visual novel game with bad story

This game has an interesting concept, but the novelty disappears after an hour or two and then it starts to get boring.
There's an illusion of choice but in reality, it doesn't matter at all how you talk to people, which decisions you make and even which characters get to live or die. The only thing that matters is what you say to influence the election results. The game also does a bad job of making you care. There are so many different characters the game tries hard to make you identify with, love, feel a connection with, etc., but in reality they have no depth, no development and some of them are downright extremely annoying. Aside from that, the writing itself is tacky and cringey and makes me feel like I'm reading a high school student's attempt at writing a script. The music is also very forced and repetitive. Finally, I felt as though the game wanted me to play a certain way because each time I decided to be non-political or support the "bad" candidate, I got reproached for it.
One thing this game does really well is the graphics. I really enjoyed the beautiful color palette, the sights, the night sky... There's a lot of eye candy.
This game was a slog to get through and I don't recommend it.

TL;DR, I'd describe it as "Fantastic buildup for a lackluster payoff"
We'll start with the good:
Visual and audio design are absolutely on point, creating beautiful and highly stylized environments. Every scene drips with atmosphere and immerses you into the world of Petria as you road-trip through its crumbling backroads
Characters are well written and feel interesting to get to know. Their storylines are compelling and each meeting leaves you wanting to get to know them more.
The gameplay is enjoyable if not particularly challenging, it largely exists as a way to introduce a bit of variety or drama into the story-heavy game, and it largely succeeds at doing so.
Now to the bad
Story progression often feels like it lacks cohesion. From the narrative's perspective you encounter each character as a stranger in each of their scenes, however you the player are already familiar with their backstories and will make decisions based on previous encounters. This leads to problem #2
Big character moments often don't feel earned. Certain major character revelations will come up completely unprompted and with no buildup.
Which leads into problem #3
While the game insists that all your choices are important, this is a lie. 4 of the 8 characters do not have a variable storyline, their story will always progress the exact same way regardless of the choices you make.
The major determining factors for the other 4 character outcomes are not based on your decisions in their storylines, but rather on the meta-game political system, where the popularity of a particular candidate will determine whether they get to live.
So the ending feels very unsatisfying, and everything that came before is basically pointless, as the only way to actually make a change is farming points for the politician.
I wish I could recommend this game, because I loved my time with it. It has some fantastic moments that will stick with me. But the ending spoiled all investment I had in the story, and left such a bitter taste in my mouth that I don't think I'll come back to it anytime soon.
If you want to pick it up, I suggest you do it on a sale, and enjoy the journey if not the destination.

Fun and relaxing game. Wanted this game for a long time and finally bought it. For now I love the story.. I mean stories of the characters that you meet along the way. Music is another thing of this game I love. I recommend this game to everyone who wants to chill a little, and give a break from other fast pacing games. :)

This game is a box of chocolates. I adore and love it. I expected some relaxing 1hr indie game and instead got blown out of my chair by its grandiosity. Banger soundtrack. However, it is absolutely false advertising. I repeat:
This is a semi-linear story game. It is NOT a procedural generation RNG game.
If you play it as basically a replayable story game with ~3 endings, it is the bomb (and personally, I found it better than e.g. Firewatch), but if you're expecting a genuine ProGen game like No Man's Sky or Valheim, you'll be disappointed. The devs shouldn't advertise it as a "thousands of iterations" kind of game, it literally just shuffles the same 20 cards and then claims there are 38760 possible routes. But if you drop that expectation, it is damn good. No spoilers, but I enjoyed the characters and creativity of level design. And man, the music (despite it not being era accurate).
I also wanna address negative reviews - They absolutely have validity, but probably lack perspective. This is the studio's FIRST GAME EVER and also 20 bucks at best, mere pennies when in a bundle sale! Lowkey mindblowing how much you get for a small, cheap indie game. Some complain about the language or whatever being "cringe", and to those I say that this game is made by French devs borrowing American aesthetics, but the game is, as strangely as this will sound, not about North America. It is also, but not just. I think some people are so partisan politics pilled they forget that
authoritarian governments and revolutions are a global theme, and can be so much worse in other countries that his game hits harder, and in better ways.
It has aged incredibly well. I wish it hadn't.
I'll call it a falsely advertised masterpiece, but a masterpiece all the same.

The game is political.
Plain and simple it has a political backstory, that is entirely fictional and non-existent.
But regardless of your political ideology, the country or region you live in- there will be things you can relate to, and things you can't relate to.
And, of course, people on the forums who scream about "PoLiTiCs In gAeMs!" and who will try to twist it into a story about their own individual political beliefs.
The art style is gorgeous, IMHO. I really enjoy stylized art, more than photo-realistic art. So YMMV.
The music is fantastic.
The stories (there are many, not just one...) are engaging, with some being more detailed and interesting than others (a few left me wishing there had been more to them).
