Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer is the long awaited sequel to Kathy Rain: A Detective is Born. In the first installment, Kathy was still a student, who was thrown into a dark mystery after her grandfather died. In KR2: Soothsayer, Kathy Rain has become a private investigator who tries to solve a series of murders in her hometown.
Do you have to play the first game to understand this one?
No. KR2:S gives you a summary of the first game that will provide you with all the important context from the first game. But honestly, you should just play the first one, anyway. I replayed it before playing this one. It is fantastic even the second time around, and playing both parts back to back really increased my immersion.
The Story (spoiler-free)
Kathy Rain is a young P.I. who just recently started her own firm, but it is not going well. The award for solving a series of murders in her hometown would undoubtedly come in very handy! The murders all have a different M.O., and the only thing connecting the cases are the broken shards of an obsidian scrying mirror that are found at every crime scene, which gave this serial killer his name: Soothsayer.
Gameplay
You lead Kathy through several days of investigations, with each day a separate chapter with its own objectives. The investigation is nicely balanced between interviewing people connected to the cases, and more hands-on detective work like searching crime scenes, hacking computers, or research in the library. I loved how Clifftop handled the interviewing part. Kathy has a noteblock with the names of people and places connected to the cases, and you can ask anyone about anything or anyone in this list - but they will tell you if they don't want to talk about a certain topic, which will grey out these topics, so you don't have to click through everything on your list. In addition, you can ask people about items in your inventory, and even things in the immediate surrounding. But it is always completely logical what you should and need to ask them about, so again, you don't have to listen to pointless dialogue. KR2:S has a wide variety of puzzles. From dialogue puzzles where you have to find the right answer to convince a witness to talk to you, to combining clues to figure out a code, or even a couple of inventory puzzles, it's all there, and it all fits the theme of doing detective work. Outstanding work by Clifftop Games!
Summary and conclusion
Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer is the sequel we all have hoped and wished for. The story is fantastic , the characters are compelling, with fully voiced dialogue and excellent voice acting. The pixel art is outstanding, some truly stunninng backdrops, and even some cinematic action shots. For the most part, the puzzles felt like doing real detective work, with only a couple of exceptions (looking at you, hippie lady), and in case you got stuck, your trusty notebook contains a few hints what you should try next. There are also a whole bunch of achievements for not strictly required story elements, so there is some incentive to replay the story to try everything you might have missed the first time around. If there is one thing that I think is missing, it is the option to replay a specific day after you finished it. I also would have liked a longer epilogue to the story, with a couple more scenes showing us how the events have impacted Kathy and her relationships. All in all a fantastic game and a big recommendation!

So far, so good but I gotta stop to comment on the insane quality of the pixel art. It looks fantastic, high res and super detailed. Its nice to see that the big three of the AGS Modern Adventure Makers, Wadjet, Clifftop and Grundislav all launched a new game with higher resolution this year. I loved that trying certain fun interactions triggers achievements, as it should in any good new adveture game

I never played the first Kathy Rain, and despite the game itself recommending you play the first game first, I didn't feel like my enjoyment of Kathy Rain 2 was spoiled in any way by not having done so. I went in fully blind, and while there are rather significant story beats that reference the first game, I still enjoyed Soothsayer. So much so, I ended up going ahead and buying Kathy Rain 1 after I finished this one. And as these two games are currently bundled together on steam, you can save a little bit extra! Here's some of the things I loved, and a couple of negative takeaways from my time with Kathy Rain 2.
Positives
Art - I firstly want to praise the art style. I'm a sucker for good pixel art games, and the environments, and character models, are especially pleasing to the eye. There's a lot of detail and I was wonderfully immersed in the world of Kassidy. I also want to give a special mention to the thumbnails on the achievements which I don't believe I've ever done, but these are honestly some of the best looking and sometimes hilarious achievements I've seen on Steam. These will really look great on the Achievement Showcase on your profile! Achievements - This brings me to my next positive. While there are a lot of Achievements (65), it was a fairly easy 100%. Some of these are hilarious and require you to try out really obscure interactions, showing that the devs really thought of every odd little thing a player might try. For example I got one for trying to throw my medication into a drain! While I only received around half through natural gameplay, They were fairly easy to go back and grab any time since I had manual saves at the start of each day, and they added a good laugh to my final hour with the game. Manual Saves - Nothing infuriates me more than a game that only has autosaves. Great design decision. Puzzles - There's varying levels of difficulty to the puzzles. Not all were hard as I'd like but I spent more time than I care to admit on two particular puzzles. At times I even felt stupid, and in a detective game, this is a good thing. I rather a game like this make me feel stupid than the game treating me like I am and holding my hand every step of the way. They let me solve the case on my own which I love. Story - Easily the strongest part of the game. Without spoiling too much, it's a well-written neo-noir detective thriller with some Lovecraftian horror elements. I didn't go in expecting the supernatural element to the story but for me personally, it wasn't unwelcome. The voice work was also very well done.
Negatives
Re-playability - I may be mistaken but I didn't feel like it was possible to fail solving the case. You're not allowed to leave conversations without first asking specific questions. And if a cutscene leads to you or a POI dying, the cutscene just restarts and you're forced to pick different dialogue options. While I understand restarting a cutscene if I die, I would've liked it if POIs stayed dead and you were forced to live with that outcome, possibly losing a lead and leading you down a different path to solving the case or outright failing altogether. It would've added more re-playability to an already short game and an incentive to restart and try different options. Legnth - I completed the story in around 10 hours with maybe 1 hour or so of idle time and another 1 hunting the remainder achievements. I imagine that this could potentially be done in half the time on a second playthrough if you already know the story. I'd hope for at least a few more hours of content for the price, if not close to double the 10 hours I ended up with. Either a longer story or just more re-playability could've given me more bang for my buck, but the discount on Kathy Rain 1 works itself out to a more reasonable price altogether in the end.
Conclusion
While a little short for the price, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and certainly recommend Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer to anyone who loves detective or point and click games. It was a great throwback to games I used to play in the 90s and a lovely change of pace from the games I typically play in 2025. A great addition to the genre and I'm looking forward to playing Kathy Rain 1 and future games from Clifftop!

finished the game in about 7h. Plus: pixel graphics, gameplay, decent puzzles maybe too easy sometimes, voice acting for main characters. Minus: same problem as the first one: the story after passing 70% becomes absolute rubbish, re-furbished things from the first game with this second one. And the ending speech is an absolute diarrhea of pretentious useless words. Not a spoiler but the ending is 100% same as the first one. Why??

I'm a huge fan of the first Kathy Rain. I loved it so much, that I begged the devs to make a sequel with Kathy and Eileen in my user review. So I'm very grateful towards the devs and Raw Fury that they made this happen. And guess what? Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer far exceeded my expectations! I'm not sure where to begin, because everything in this game is what I expect from a retro-style point & click adventure. The pixel art is wonderful, with a huge amount of detail in the environments and lovely character animations. Kathy and Eileen are some of the best characters I've seen in a video game, and their voice acting is excellent. The story is very well written, with a perfect blend of exploration, suspense, humor and supernatural events. But what an adventure game makes or breaks for me are the puzzles. Luckily, Kathy Rain 2 also delivers for this. The puzzles are clever, make you feel like a real detective, and the difficulty is perfect for me: not too easy, but also not frustrating hard. I enjoyed every minute with this game and no doubt I'll replay it sooner or later. Thank you dear developers for making such a great game. And thank you Raw Fury for supporting this extremely talented studio. <3 P.S. Can I beg for another sequel here as well? :)

I really wanted to like this game. The voice acting, art and puzzles are all great, but unfortunately, the story is SEVERELY rushed. Kathy has basically no development as a protagonist and acts like a jerk for no reason, which she never did in the first game; key details and context are missing or handwaved away all the time with a "just play the first game" or "just trust us bro it really was like that" (a non-spoiler example: we never learn why Kathy and Eileen fought, just that Kathy fired her for apparently no reason and she never bothers to apologize or address it, and the story just forgets about it); two out of the three antagonists barely do anything and just show up for like two minutes. Unlike the first game, which already did fine on its own, this is the one that REALLY needs a director's cut.

I really wanted to like this game, I love a good anti-hero and a story rich mystery that also focuses on character/emotional development. I also played the first game and really enjoyed that. While I liked the retro vibes, voice work and dark humour in this sequel, I thought the story fell short on substance. There was barely any character development on Kathy or her relationships with those closest to her. All things considered, I don't think I learned anything new about Kathy compared to the first game. You get one scene where you discover why she treats those around her the way she does, but it is soon put aside with no changes to those relationships or new interaction options, and nothing is done to even address the emotional conflicts central to her life. Something so substantial like her complicated relationship with her mother (who plays a part in the plot) isn't explored but simplified. This could be kinda forgiven if there was a compelling mystery, but the story just got confusing and less compelling by the end that I felt less invested in both Kathy and the story. The difficulty level isn't high with the problem solving and puzzles in this game. As someone who loves clicking through all the dialogue and lore in a game, I finished this in four hours.

I never lost hope. The pixel art is way better, the music — once again composed by Daniel Kobylarz — is still absolutely wonderful. There’s a ton of reading, a lot of clicking, and a huge cast of characters and locations to explore. It’s a sequel that every fan of the original Kathy Rain should definitely try! I’m having an amazing time so far — Kathy Rain is back, baby!

I played the first Kathy Rain back in 2017, after getting it for $1 in a Humble Bundle for mobile games, and once again a few weeks ago, so I could prepare for this one. You could say that this sequel is more of the same, there are no gameplay changes and the story elements are very similar to the first game. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I thought it was some good writing, but kinda hoped it had gone in a different direction. The puzzles were all very easy and mostly didn't take any time to figure out, I also thought the car mini-game/puzzle was extremely unnecessary and cringeworthy, so the puzzles are definitely a low point for me. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend the game to point-and-click adventure fans. There isn't really anything new here for most people, but the story kept me enthralled for 6.5 hours (about an hour longer than the first game), so that's good enough for me.
