Cataclismo is an atmospheric roguelike dungeon crawler that plunges players into a dark, haunting world filled with challenging enemies, intricate level design, and a persistent sense of mystery. Developed with a clear passion for the genre, the game weaves together procedural generation, intense combat, and resource management into an experience that demands both skill and strategy. From the moment you descend into its grim environments, Cataclismo makes it clear that survival is never guaranteed, and every decision can mean the difference between life and a sudden, brutal death.
Visually, Cataclismo embraces a gritty, pixel-art aesthetic that perfectly complements its moody, oppressive atmosphere. The color palette favors muted tones and shadows, reinforcing the bleakness of the setting while ensuring that enemies and hazards stand out clearly in the dim light. Character animations are fluid, and the variety of enemy designs—from grotesque beasts to mysterious humanoid figures—adds a layer of tension to exploration. Environmental details, such as flickering torches, crumbling ruins, and eerie soundscapes, work in harmony to immerse players in a world that feels both dangerous and alive.
The gameplay is at the heart of Cataclismo’s appeal. Combat is fast-paced and unforgiving, requiring quick reflexes and thoughtful positioning. Players have access to a diverse arsenal of weapons and abilities, each with its own strengths and drawbacks. Mastery of these tools is essential, as enemies often attack in groups or possess unpredictable behaviors that can quickly overwhelm the unprepared. The game’s roguelike structure means that each run is unique, with randomized layouts and item drops keeping the experience fresh and rewarding players who adapt their strategies on the fly.
Resource management plays a crucial role in the game’s challenge. Health and stamina are precious commodities, and the scarcity of healing items adds tension to every encounter. The inventory system encourages careful planning: deciding when to conserve resources or risk pushing deeper into the dungeon can be the difference between success and failure. The persistent progression elements, such as unlockable skills or gear that carry over between runs, provide a satisfying sense of growth and motivate repeated attempts to delve further into the cataclysmic depths.
Narratively, Cataclismo opts for a minimalist approach, delivering its story through environmental cues, item descriptions, and cryptic dialogue. This subtle storytelling invites players to piece together the lore at their own pace, enhancing the sense of mystery and encouraging exploration. While the narrative may not be front and center, it enriches the overall experience by providing context for the eerie world and the relentless threats within it.
One of the few drawbacks of Cataclismo is that its steep difficulty curve and punishing mechanics might alienate more casual players. The game demands patience and a willingness to learn from repeated failures, which can be frustrating but ultimately rewarding. Additionally, while the procedural generation offers replayability, some players may notice occasional repetition in dungeon layouts or enemy encounters. However, these issues are minor compared to the depth and satisfaction the game provides to those who invest the time.
In conclusion, Cataclismo stands out as a compelling roguelike dungeon crawler that blends challenging gameplay with a richly crafted atmosphere. Its combination of strategic combat, resource management, and immersive worldbuilding creates a tense and engaging experience that keeps players coming back for more. For fans of dark, punishing roguelikes who enjoy unraveling stories through subtle environmental storytelling, Cataclismo offers a haunting journey worth embarking on.

Forget therapy, forget personal growth. My true calling is designing impenetrable fortresses of absolute, unyielding, pixelated violence. Cataclismo has turned me into a digital warlord, cackling maniacally as another wave of shadowy horrors splatters against my meticulously crafted, multi-layered defenses. If you ever need to survive the apocalypse, don't call me – I'll be too busy perfecting the ultimate killbox. This game is a glorious, brick-laying addiction.

This game creates a mix of RTS and tower defence game. It provides enough mechanics throughout the campaign to keep your mind puzzling over how to best overcome the challenges presented. With resources gathering, attacks at night but also at day, causes enough for you to constantly be prepared.
The building in this game is great, offers enough for anyone to just build whatever they need, yet for those who do not want to do that, they can open the steam workshop and select from community made structures.
Campaign, with all side missions, takes around 12.5 hours while still having more to explore in terms of other game modes.

This game is incredible. Brilliant art and story, all without compromising the quality of the strategic game play. Building is super fun, and its quite challenging no matter how much you try to cheese things due to good balancing.

I was super hype for this game originally as it checks a lot of boxes for me. Tower Defense, base building, horde survival, RTS... love all that stuff. What I wasn't quite expecting is the pacing. This game can be pretty slow.
First off the building is super cool and intricate but you're working with such small pieces it takes time and brain power to get stuff figured out. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but this does mean you'll be a spending a lot of the game in pause mode while you build and scope things out for the next wave. See I personally like "real-time with pause" strategy games because I'm slow af but I still wasn't expecting to be sitting in pause building most of the time so be aware of that.
Otherwise the art style and world/lore they pulled here is good stuff. The building mechanics are well developed and often implemented in puzzle-like exploration which I thought was great. There's a fun and useful variety of units as well as mission types. The main missions changed things up pretty regularly with some revolving more around defending, others around base building, and some with a mix of both. There were "tower defense" missions which I really enjoyed and upgrading your units and abilities in between missions came with satisfying improvements to the gameplay. Oh and of course observing the chaos as the hordes clash with your defenses is something that never gets old and is the best reason to play.
Basically Cataclismo is awesome just be aware of the slower pace.
Unusual game with surprisingly fun gameplay
Despite the weird art design and the annoyingly over-zealous pronunciation of names, this is really a good game. Pay attention for changes as you progress through the campaign and you'll do just fine. The best part of this unique building/survival/tower defense game is the ability to learn from your mistakes by recycling placements and re-loading to points in time without any penalties. The campaign does a good job of keeping things fresh along the way, and the gameplay is more than interesting enough for an entire play-through. If you get it on sale, it's well worth the buy!
Some annoyances include the awkward camera movement (just let us use the mouse with a modifier key), the tiresome voices of units accepting your commands ("post me high!"), and the lack of early enough explanation for key story elements. You're never told why you're collecting oxygen at first, as the developer missed some opportunity to elaborate more on the setting and background. So you're treating oxygen like gold in other games, but without knowing why.
The music is awesome, with a subtle melancholy vibe. Plenty of guitar driven themes that are reminiscent of the original Diablo. The graphics and style is adequate, though nothing special. I see too many 3D models repeated, with rather bland textures. However, this isn't a game that needs to be visually enthralling to enjoy it. Heck, even retro sprite-based graphics would have been fine for it. So when you get a couple of larger 3D models with a lot of animation, it's a bit strange. It's not bad, just a little bland.
I'm looking forward to exploring more past the campaign, but for now the main story and progression is quite entertaining.

If you like games in this genre Cataclismo is a great one.
A fun City Builder/Tower Defense game where you build your defenses block-by-block rather than placing down premade structures. Almost every structure can be stacked on top of one another allowing you to quite literally "Build Tall" rather than wide based on preference or need. The building mechanics give you a lot of freedom in how you approach building your defenses.
It's satisfying to use the freedom offered in Survival mode to slowly turn a sprawling city into a dense network of stairways and spires
The loop is pretty straight forward, expand your economy/defenses during the day in preparation for the attacks/waves that come every night. Expand, tech up, build up, and hope you did enough to survive.
Save scumming is built into the the lore/gameplay. Your saves are referred to as 'Time Anchors" explained as the ability to roll back time to a previous point. The only limitation on this is that anything that happened in the timeline after the anchor gets wiped; meaning you lose any saves made after the one you roll back to. This doesn't really change the feel of saving/reloading in a game of this genre, but the fact that the Devs decided to incorporate it into the story/lore of the game is a nice touch for immersion and story telling.
The Story/campaign is quite good, if a bit short. Which is unfortunate, because I feel like the story is where Cataclismo shines. This is probably my biggest complaint, Cataclismo is the type of game that is at its best when played on hand-crafted levels with unique variables/challenges, endless mode is fun [strike]but randomly generated levels can rarely create the kind of scenarios that force the player to be flexible/creative in their approach[/strike] After playing more of the endless mode I can say that this statement is incorrect. The endless mode is great and the map generation is good and adds a lot of replayability. That being said, it has fully integrated Workshop support for custom levels. Hopefully the kind of creativity Cataclismo allows will inspire some interesting maps from the community.
The endless mode has it's own unique mechanics slightly different from the normal Campaign/Skirmish mode, It's actually where all the game's mechanics really shine, giving you freedom of approach to a level that the 4-Night maps just can't offer There is an element of randomness to the formula that creates more variation and replayability.

I have a LOT of negative reviews for games that have inexplicable blunders that, equally inexplicably, medium and big name reviewers just ignore, and these are things that really shoot "fun" in the foot.
Let's be super, super clear with Cataclismo - you build bases, have a small army, and defend against waves. *The* defining element is that you place bricks, as others say, LEGO-like, that matter for how your defenses hold against the horde, and not in a "I built a ring around the base and it was good," way - you can build a spiral staircase tower for archers that looks and functions differently than mine, even if "optimal" gameplay results in a handful of designs. Everything about the execution of these core gameplay elements is executed either brilliantly, or very well. Positive review.
Now for the "but," none of which should detract from the above - I don't feel like I got a USD$30 game. It's super, super close, and considering the bevvy of disappointments out there, I eagerly push this to the fore. I feel like the game requires a bit more... sustained concentration?... than I'm happy with for an evening cooldown game. Neither of these are big problems. I recommend the game. I think most people I know who enjoy genre games close to this would 100% be "missing out" to not get this. My -quibbles- are things the developers clearly have improved over time, so who knows? Maybe if this gets the audience it DESERVES, the developers will get that liiiiiiittttlee bit more time with the oven to nudge this high 9 to the 10.0 they're clearly on track for.
