I never played the original, so I can't compare this remake to the OG. I found this game fun albeit clunky. It's slightly eerie, has great voice acting, a decent story, and some interesting puzzles. However, it's easy to get annoyingly/frustratingly lost in the mansion and the combat is just okay. I'm glad combat is there, but it's relatively clunky. Despite appreciating Lovecraft horror vibes, I always seem to be disappointed by the genre's endings. This holds true for this game. All in all, if you want a slightly spooky game with a mystery to solve and puzzles to complete, it's worth picking up Alone in the Dark.

A good game. The game is unlike any other survival horror game and i believe it is in a league of its own.

Pros: -Two optional protagonists that play different roles in the story. -The dark world has so many unique aesthetics that are simultaneously beautiful and terrifying. -The game constantly drops you between the real world and the dark world without warning, which can occasionally be irritating, but also creates this constant uneasiness that is perfect for horror. -A story that hits a lot of horror cliches, but is still really unique overall. Cons: -Game stuttered quite a few times while playing. My gaming laptop isn't crazy good by any means but usually doesn't struggle to run these types of games. -Combat isn't fluid at all, potentially by design to create tension in the game, but mostly just creates tension in my body. -The scares for the first half of the game are ENTIRELY made up of jump scares. The game has the option to use stealth but that's almost entirely impossible when every battle is unplanned. Overall though I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who loves a good story and a bit of a scare.

Fantastic blend of post-RE4 survival horror from the "over-the-shoulder" era and third person adventure segments. It felt like the kind of more classic survival horror experience we haven't had in a very long time with the focus on atmosphere and storytelling over jump scares and I wouldn't have a problem recommending this to someone that likes less intense horror in the vein of classic Resident Evil. It's a weird comparison because it's an obscure game now, but the segments in the mansion where you're just exploring and solving puzzles with little combat outside of a couple scripted lapses into the nightmare world reminded me a lot of Murdered: Soul Suspect. The only complaint I have is that both characters have the same exact levels with different cut-scenes outside of a brief section of the second-to-last chapter that's based on their personal memories and unique for each of them.

You are never alone in the dark in this game, what's with that, it's daylight most of the time and you are surrounded by people constantly. The gameplay is subpar when compared to other games of the genre. The graphics are decent, not great. The acting is pretty good. The performance is pretty bad, the traversal stuttering is terrible. The story is.. well I have no idea, but for sure not great. Get it of a deep sale if you are curious, there is some fun to be had here.

I don't know who this game is for. It's not really scary, nor is it really suspenseful. The combat is pretty bad, which is on par with most survival horror. It is however very beautiful and other than the occasional texture load, it plays very smoothly. And the actors look and sound pretty much like they do in real life, also good. I suppose I *should* like it more, but it just doesn't grab me. I guess if the whole early 20th century New Orleans vibe is something you'd enjoy, you'll probably like it. It's just very vanilla to me, like somebody said "go make a Resident Evil game for kids 12 and under." Maybe I'll revisit it at some point and like it more, won't be the first time.

The original Alone in the Dark is considered the granddaddy of survival horror, inspiring Resident Evil that later became the flagship game series of the genre. This new Alone in the Dark is the remake of the original and interestingly, it adopts many mechanics from Resident Evil and things really come to a full circle. What sets it apart from Resident Evil and other survival horror games, is that the game is a lot more cinematic. It has David Harbour and Jodie Comer playing two leading roles, both of whom are very talented and charming actors. Sadly, I think they are underused as the script doesn’t have a lot for them to work with. I would much rather the budget was spent polishing the game instead of hiring two famous but expensive actors because this game has issues I believe more development budget can fix. Firstly, optimization is far from satisfaction – frame rates don’t show abnormality, but when you turn the camera relatively fast, the game always has micro-stutter that causes small screen tearing. It happened to my friends as well and I used G-sync and tried several adjustments, but the issue still persists. Though I don’t feel sick about it, it is uncomfortable and I would advise those who have severe motion sickness not to play the game. Secondly, the quality of experience is inconsistent. In each chapter, you explore the mansion and another realm. The time in the mansion is mostly enjoyable, but when in another realm, some levels are great but some are so underwhelming that I just don’t want to experience again. The dimension shifts can also feel kind of abrupt sometimes, breaking the flow and making the experience feel cut-off and fragmented, since cutscenes might be triggered unexpectedly, interrupting current exploration and advancing the progress to where you can't go back. Playing at hard difficulty really feels the stress from resource management, which is done better than recent Resident Evil. Therefore, it necessitates the need for melee. However, shooting is already kind of wonky and inaccurate because of the micro-stutter, but melee is where it really drops the ball. It feels unresponsive and clumsy and particularly frustrating when fighting monsters crawling on the ground. Because of the low hitbox, your swings often completely miss the enemies when they were supposed to land. This goes to show where the budget is really needed – not fancy actors but improving fundamental aspects like the bad coding. As you can choose from two characters, technically you need two playthroughs to finish the game since each character has one or two levels of their own, exclusive collectibles, cutscenes and endings. But I only did Emily playthrough not just because I don’t think the difference is substantial enough, more importantly, I don’t want to experience the micro-stutter, poorly designed levels and irritating melee again in a short amount of time. Survival horror games are typically known for replayability, but beating the game only unlocks a harder difficulty where you can use all guns from the beginning. There is no weapon upgrade, and I went through most of the game with melee just fine at hard difficulty, so I don’t believe unlocking all guns brings any substantial gameplay difference, nor does it have any new weapons or outfits to unlock, adding more reasons for me not to play another playthrough. Aside from the shortcoming with shooting and melee, the combat flow is great and fluid. It really gives you that bada*s feeling when you're picking up environmental objects as throwing weapons, dodging with precision, and seamlessly mixing gunplay with melee to take down enemies. But it is quite a missed opportunity to not add different types of melee weapons with their own unique features. That would definitely add more depth and enhance the combat experience. In terms of the story, it is a bit abrupt and incoherent that there isn’t a strong connection between the antagonist you deal with for the majority of the game and the final boss, who needs a bit more build-up. But I might be wrong, as I didn’t do the Edward playthrough. The music is also nice. Overall, though this review may sound mostly negative, nothing is unbearably bad about this game but nothing particularly stands out, either. As a 7-hour short game, it is a decent pastime.
