One of the best games ever made, but it will not run on modern machines unless you use a compatibility wrapper such as cnc-ddraw. cnc-ddraw is an open source project downloadable from github that gives you a ddraw.dll to drop into the same folder as the game's executable, so that Windows will use it instead of the global dll. This resolves two show-stoppers in JA2:
1. The game freezing on a black screen the moment it's started. The game is unable to detect that the codec to play the intro video is unavailable; cnc-ddraw lets it detect the failure state so it can know to move on. This issue can also be fixed by deleting Data\Intro.slf
2. The game freezing on alt-tab.
JA2 Stracciatella also works, but the only part of Stracciatella I care about is provided more simply by cnc-ddraw. Other compatibility wrappers exist as well.
