Maybe you're familiar with Dante's Inferno and the Nine Circles of Hell, or the movie Hellraiser with it's pain loving Cenobites. If not, at least you will have played, or know about, the cult classic Doom where you fend of the invasion of demonic evil. Each being portrayals of hell and beings from the underworld and some might be terrified of this. To me; Disc Room is far more hellish. Only utter masochists will enjoy this purgatory of endless, soulless, saw blades cutting through your body and then waking up to repeat the same process again and again and again through seemingly endless permutations of saw like contraptions in differently configured rooms. Maybe next time you will survive a few more seconds? But will it be enough to continue traversing through this torment and maybe find an exit?

This is a deceptively simple game: run around single screen rooms avoiding sharp spinning discs. But within this simple premise there is complexity and surprising flexibility. The character upgrades considerably change up the gameplay, providing you with a rather tactical moveset. It gets quite hard - I didn’t open up all the rooms - but I thoroughly enjoyed weaving around all those monstrous discs. The charming comic book art style is excellent, and although the story isn’t too deep the telling of it - largely through the very well-written bestiary (my favourite line: ‘I wonder if we are the only species these discs have had their weirding way with’) - is creative. An original, fun and addictive wee game.

Original concepts are hard to come by nowadays. It's hard to think of any, and it often doesn't pay off. But oh god... this game really did pay off
