feels a bit controversial to actually recommend the remaster, but I enjoyed it. I'm not going to lie, its not a 'good' remaster, the upscaled textures at best, only look slightly better, and at worst look like something totally different (why are mirrors suddenly just white walls?) There's some awful misaligned textures, I can't remember if they were in the original game or new to this remaster, but even if they were in the original, not fixing them shows it was just a lazily cobbled together AI upscale of textures and not actual handcrafted improvement. Also when I originally got it, it ran like crap, but since then, its been running really smoothly, I can't say if they improved the optimization, or my newer PC is just brute forcing it, but it ran smoothly.
With all that whining out of the way... its a mediocre remaster of a genuinely interesting and unique game that makes it run on modern hardware without needing any tweaks. Should you play the original instead? maybe, but this one is more convenient. Kingpin is not a perfect game, but it tries a lot of cool stuff that's very unique for a quake 2 engine game. The ability to talk to people with a 'positive' or 'negative' attitude was cool, hiring thugs to follow you and help in combat is fantastic, and its a better implementation than Daikatana, not that that's a high bar to clear...
Simply put, its a game worth playing, up to you if you want the original or remaster, I can't recommend the remaster as the definitive way to play it but its 'good enough'.

Game was fun! Never got to complete when I played as a kid. I definitely recommend waiting for it to be on sale if you were to purchase it. $25 seems kinda crazy!
