It doesn't improve upon the Pokemon formula. As such I can't call it great. But if you're a diehard fan of that type of game it's a very competent game. All in all I'd say it's a good game. But I wanted more innovation.

i'm coming back to this review when i find something outstanding that redeems: -the cat-ghost soul collecting minigame being this bad, long and unskippable because it's part of the story -double game speed and any timed events like platforms breaking not being adjusted for playability at all, had to switch down the speed every single time for certain "jump n run" sections because the smallest delay would result in having to start all over again. i love speed adjustments for combat systems and movement as it's very pleasing to my adhd need for speed, HOWEVER it has to work smoothly and not be an inconvenience that needs to be turned off -the lame ash fighting system. incredibly unlucky that i played this game after monster sanctuary, maybe i would've been more lenient without something to compare it to (the last pokemon clones i've played were ages ago and i recently got in the mood to play some again), but now that i can compare it– why even let me choose skills if every other one is just an improved version of an already given skill so far. just auto upgrade it, i'll be able to live with the slightly decreased hit chance for bigger damage the potential system is cool technically adds a lot to the concept of shinies, but if the fighting gameplay is boring anyways... it can't fix this -many parts of the ui, notably 1. i could see this being more accessible on pc with a mouse, but when i use the dpad to click right for the next item tab in e.g. the shop menu there is a big chance i have to press 5 times or click away and come back to actually access the tab 2. long press for certain actions like removing held items instead of buttons/an additional button in the drop down selection in the edit party menu 3. WHY IS EVERY ICON HUGE?! this game doesn't even need all the different item tabs, being able to switch to a list overview would be amazing. naturally each item has a sprite and i can understand wanting to show it off, but it drives me insane navigation wise 4. too little information regarding potential damage or hit chance or any relevant number during combat. rng can be adjusted/turned off, but i don't *need* that. just tell me what chances i'm gambling on and we're good. 5. also i noticed some inputs are more sensitive than others, most noticeable whenever you enter a nickname for your coromons– delete is far more sensitive and removes two letters, i actually have to barely touch the button to avoid this. this happens across different menus. even cleaned all of my buttons again to check if i was either imagining it or was trembling or something. nuh-uh, that's in the game and doesn't happen across other games (i practically play steam deck only currently) i do enjoy the quirky dialogues, even trainer battle npcs have more personality than most games– however, easily skipped because fighting a guy with a ferret after youve fought three pairs of them while walking up to him yeah... im not stimulated enough to actually care bc of the gameplay (not smooth enough to be casual and fast-paced / not difficult and customisable enough to be challenging) and it's still all very short stuff and not particularly new BIGGEST PRO whoever did the coromon designs + animations ate and needs to get ate, i could look at the tweening for hours... the sprites are really well stylised but still authentically shaded– it adds so much depth to them!! i love the protag customizations as well. the free to acquire items are so creative and fun, but i will probably never touch that jewels through online pvp system. kinda sad to see what i could hypothetically customise, if it wouldn't require waiting ages for a match. i hope the further content blasts me away so i can change this to a "recommended", but currently it's neither cozy nor interesting good enough to play while sleepy

I liked the simplicity that came with the retro vibe it gave as a pixelated game. I can tell the the team poured their heart into this and it shows. What i love most is the hint of a sequel, which I WILL be on the look out for.

Joguinho bom. Sou bem chato com "imitações" de Pokemon mas esse aqui me surpreendeu, e nem to no final. Vale a pena!

kinda wish i could give this game a like in the middle. I do like the game and i'm on my way to the end of the game at this point. But man the constant crashing randomly, for seemingly no reason...just gets to a point. I've had the game freeze completely and then crash, the graphics distorting. and random other glitches. It seems other have had it. But maybe its my pc i dunno. But this is the only game i've had so many crashes with T.T

Coromon is such an awesome monster taming game! Very polished and fun, not too grindy. The highlight for me is the gorgeous pixel art!

If I had to sum up Coromon in one sentence it would be. “ Legally distinct Pokémon Leaf Green Romhack.” If Robopon understood the outline of what it means to be a Pokémon clone then Coromon is recoloring the body of Pokémon with the really nice felt tip markers. It's easier to just go down the list of all the Romhack ideas that were lifted and injected into this property. The game starts with a boatload of settings that lets you adjust how difficult encounters will generally be as well as how random a large amount of game mechanics can be. Nuzlocke natively exists within the game. Planting and harvesting is streamlined, now fruit can be picked up via a droid. After discovering the plant pot, you never have to be in the same area as the plant again to replant and harvest its crop with a generous yield. You are fully informed and able to manipulate Coromon's IV and EV stats. Upon entering a battle you can look up the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent or even yourself. HMS are replaced by gadgets, and you can have the equivalent of FLY very early on in the game. Moves can be swapped in and out anytime you are out of combat with no penalty to you whatsoever. Fruits can be crafted into various healing items meaning even if you run out of money for some reason you can still restock by stacking priority fruits and converting them on the fly. Mana (or PP) is easy to buy and stock up on but even then if you run out of mana in a fight you can sacrifice a turn to restore it. All moves use the same pool of mana instead of one particular move running out when overused or drained. This makes and more makes the gameplay experience feel like someone streamlined a Pokémon game. It honestly is what Pokémon should be. Well. Almost. A few things that are in excellent Pokémon ROM hacks that would have made this game godlike, but it lacks it. Such things are; Wild encounters can have you face off against up to 3 opponents but you never even the odds in your favor. It's always 1v1 or 1v2 or 1v3. In Vanilla Pokémon and Pokémon Romhacks you often can do 2v2 against opponents. You can hold fruits, but you cannot consume them as a substitution for traditional healing items. They can only be used in combat and triggered when their conditions are met. There's an item that repels monsters like in Pokémon, and while there are other scents to modify encounters, there is no super or max repel that keeps opponents away for a long time. Nor is there a quick option to use another can of repel without having to go into the menu to activate it. A bike is never acquired and while you do get to surf you don't get to surf on the open seas. Exploration is incredibly sparse, it is a very small world map that very rarely rewards exploration. There are no babies or breeding in Coromon. All monsters are caught, traded, or gifted. There are no super monsters that you can catch or super forms that can add a temporary evolutionary form to a Coromon, something a lot of Pokémon ROM Hacks replicate and expand on. Titans are not caught, and no other super creatures exist to be caught or conquered. Coromon are not given much if any personification, and there are no minigames that exist to create a Tamagotchi like bond with your monsters. Stuff like that being missing from the game just keeps it from being perfect, but it also highlights that a more perfect gameplay experience is in a Pokémon Romhack. Of course, not everyone is interested or able to hack a ROM file of a Pokémon game, so this game fills this niche. It has all the classic moves that competitive Pokémon players like to use (the held items as well) the battle dome adjusts various stats and effects giving you way more control when you play those modes. Coromon is just a good game, but it was designed like it wasn't prepared to be anything more than a fine Pokémon clone.
Stats
Time to beat the story: 32.4h Time for 100% achievements: 57.2 Crashes: 8 Gamebreaking bugs / glitches: 0
Introduction
This review will compare the game to Pokemon. I try to 100% most of the games I play, so some opinions might be influenced by the achievements in the game.
Quick overview

Pros

Amazing artstyle both for the environment and especially the Coromon
The UI looks great, and it also supports clicking with the mouse
Great SFX and Music
Lots of QOL features that Pokemon lacks
Lots of game customization options
Nuzlocke and randomizer options
The game can be speed up
Coromon have 3 different color palettes based on potential (IVs)

Cons

There could have been more Coromon Types
Could use more rebindable shortcuts for keyboard
TMs are consumable
Some sound effects are too loud and high pitched
Some dungeons feel too long
No easy way to level up lower level Coromon (especially early game)

Bugs

Sometimes the game got stuck while saving
The game crashed after the credits (before it saved), so I had to beat the final boss again to complete the game

More detailed overview

Story
The story is similar to Pokemon. You beat titans and stop the evil team in the end. While the overall plot is nothing groundbreaking and the ending feels a bit rushed, the dialogue adds a lot of charm. There are lots of references and it can be humourous at times. The MC is also not silent which makes this even better, since the MC reacts to what NPCs say and banter with them.
Gameplay and Level Design
There is a lot of diversity in the areas you visit and visually they look great. One problem I have is that there are too many trainers in each area with limited team variety. All Trainer battles are 1v1s and since there is "only" 110 Coromon you will fight the same ones often enough for it to feel repetitive towards the end of the game. The titan fights are the best fights in the game - although they could maybe have a bit less HP. Before each titan, you have to complete a dungeon full of trainers and puzzles. Most of the dungeons are interesting, they just drag on for too long. There are checkpoints in dungeons which acts as fast travel within the dungeon, which makes this better, but some dungeons do not have enough checkpoints. Puzzles do not stay solved, so if you can't skip it with a checkpoint, you have to solve the puzzle every time. This is especially annoying in the final dungeon, as there is no checkpoint at the titan, so you have to solve 3 puzzles again, if you want to do something else before fighting it. Speed up helps with making traversing faster, but the fact that it is "needed" is an indicator that the level design could use some improvements. Coromon suffers the same problem Pokemon does, where trying to add newly caught mons to the team is annoying, due to there not existing a fast way to catch them up in EXP - so they are underleveled.
Difficulty (Options)
The game is on the easier side but the titan battles make it more difficult than Pokemon. The preset difficulty options don't make the game more difficult, in the standard way, as it is more "external factors" that are changed. What I mean by this is that trainers do not have better Coromon movesets and items. It is things like changing shop prices and permadeath. The game's Nuzlocke difficulty (insane) is great. However, for some reason it also makes it so that you are not allowed to run from wild Coromon, which just makes traversal more annoying. There are numerous custom difficulty options which is amazing, as you can choose what rules should be applied, but you have to beat the game on insane if you are going for achievements.
QOL
This game has a lot of cool features and QOL changes. I will list a few I like:

There are no HMs in this game, as they are replaced with key items instead
You can see what Coromon are available in each area on the map.
You can switch party members everywhere
You can relearn moves easily
You can see IVs, and the coromons possible abilities
You can change abilities and reset IVs by using gold.
You can manually choose which stat the IVs go into.
The primary thing that I appreciate is the game being more transparent when it comes to information being available to the player. In Pokemon a lot of information is hidden and you need to use external tools / sites to see more detailed information about mechanics, so this is a step in the right direction.
Coromon and types
The Coromon designs are amazing, and it is definitely the strongest part of this game. There is however only 110 so it can become a bit repetitive fighting the same Coromon from trainers. The weird part is that some Coromon appear a lot, while others do not appear at all. It could have been varied a bit more, and they could have reduced the amount of trainers too, to make it feel less repetitive. The type chart is very basic. There are 7 standard types, and 6 offense only types. All of these (apart from water) only interact with 2 - 3 types when dealing damage. This makes moves deal neutral damage much of the time. This gets better later in the game, but it is a bit "boring" especially in the early game. There are also no dual types.
Achievements
Most of the achievements in this game are straightforward. There is one grind achievement Senior Researcher and a couple challenge run achievements "No deaths" and "Nuzlocke". Senior Researcher requires you to get the player to research level 100 which takes a long time. I could not be bothered to battle coromon for multiple hours, so I made a script which did it for me - it still took 10h flat. The challenge run achievements are not too bad, and you can trivialise them by overleveling your team, they were just boring.
Stability
The game is stable but 8 crashes in 57h is still quite a lot. Luckily the game autosaves frequently.
Sound
A lot of the SFXs vary in volume and pitch. Most of the time this is fine but some sounds are too problematic. For instance, the sound that plays when sending out a Coromon is loud and very high-pitched You can't turn the volume of this down without turning everything down, so I just had to "get used to it".
Overall
The game improves on some areas from Pokemon, but others have the same problems - some areas like the type chart is lackluster due to being too simplified. I feel like this game introduces a lot of cool things, but they are either too simple / not explored enough, or they overstay their welcome. I would have liked more complexity for battles, whether it be more Coromon types, double battles or something else to make it less repetitive. I thought the first half of the game was amazing and I was looking forward to continuing with the game, but I feel like the last half of the game got a bit stale. There where not enough new things introduced, and you had encountered most Coromon already so I just focused on finishing the story. All in all it is still a great game.
Score
Score: 7.5/10 100% Achievements difficulty: Low* 100% Achievements annoyance: Medium 100% Achievements grind: Medium** Rankings: None, Low, Medium, High, Very High, Extreme - and custom descriptions for specific cases * You can cheese the game by just overleveling, otherwise it would have been higher. ** I used a script to grind to Research Level 100.
Recommendation
If you like Pokemon this game is definitely worth giving a try.
