What a great game. Quirky graphics and excellent controls. The difficulty on the "normal" setting is just right. And the game as a whole is just an enjoyable adventure. It's a 3/4 overhead view shooter by the way. That should let you know if it's for you...

Surprisingly a great top down shooter with probably the sexiest voxel art present on steam, supported by a very appreciable story. 8/10

Wow. This games visual beauty is absolutely stunning. I don't believe I have seen Voxel Art quite like this. The mix of 3D, and 2D foregrounds and backgrounds are amazing. The attention to detail, with the little detail Voxel art gives was 10/10. The gun play with a controller was very smooth, the dodging and all around movement is good for the pace of the game. You get plenty of ammo, and plenty of bandages (Normal Difficulty) for an all around great shoot em up. The music, is also a very good addition to this game I feel as well. The way the music picks up and gets louder as the boss fights go on, the lower the health, the harder the fight and the more blood pumping music is going through your mind as your bullet dodging and paying attention to all of your surroundings. My blood, was for sure pumping here and there and I noticed myself picking up the pace with a sort of mini panic as I focused on killing the boss, crowd control and bullet dodging. Story and translation, could use a little work. All it would take is one guy to go through the text as a whole and just change up the wording and broken English here and there. The story was surprisingly not bad. I didn't jump into the game expecting much, but was still impressed with what such a genre filled with zombies could have different takes. Crabs. God damn crabs. Annie, who's the main character in this story is a tad bit overly attached to her Fiance, Jack. The other main character of the game. Some lines pleading for Jack could have easily been removed, but I think the foreign barrier between the Asian studio Pixel Rice to show american culture on romance wasn't TOO bad but her clingy attitude is easily forgotten with the games advancement in the story and the non-stop action and all around great music choice. The average user will get about 3-4 hours in this game. I took about a 30 min break while eating last night when I first started up the game but the game in itself without any deaths and full search of every room will be a solid 3 hours that I believe you should experience. I would gladly pay the $10 USD price point, as I got this in the Humble Bundle so it was of course bundled. But I am glad I looked into it, I told myself to finish it within the first 30 minutes simply because I wanted to bask myself in the art style and music of a previously unknown game studio. Bravo Pixel Rice Studios. Bravo.

This game is gorgeous. However, it's frustrating to play, which made me thankful it was so short. The game is incredibly buggy with levels where you can be shot while you're talking, locked out of continuing by walking to far, and other small things (mostly lag in some areas) that just took me out of the experience. The abysmal localization also is just, well it's poor. The story is kind of jank and I can't say how much I just wasn't into this title as much as I wanted to be. I saw this a few years ago on youtube and thought it was so pretty, but I couldn't remember the name. I ended up going through years of that youtubers content to find this game because I thought I was misremembering it and it was driving me nuts, and now playing it... well I'm glad its over. :-/
just discovered what voxel is
RESOGUN was the first game i played in a voxel art style, i didn't know what voxel means anyway but now i do. now am on the lookout for any voxel game out there, man what they did with the attention to details is just amazing. have't finished the game yet but i just felt especially with main menu's music playing in the background that i should write something. b back after i finish the game, going to shoot some zombies. EDIT: ok, after finishing the game i ended up gifting it to 3 of my friends, and i could say that regarding to michael jackson's song whene he asks if ANNIE is OK? well if u must know
YES ANNIE IS OK
. i can easily recommend this game for the graphics alone, let alone the gameplay, the story and the fantastic music. YEAH AND ONE MORE THING, PLAY THIS GAME ON HARD DIFFICULTY FOR A BETTER EXPERIENCE.

ANNIE: Last Hope is one of the better Voxel-style graphical games I have played. ANNIE is also one of the better Twin Stick Shooter games I have played. ANNIE mixes up its action often with cool enemy variety, hulking bosses that take up a large swath of the screen, nice impactful sound effects and an overall chaotic world that is fun to mash through from start to finish. I bought ANNIE for full price after seeing its trailer, hoping that it didn't show an overly-glossed series of gameplay sections that I didn't encounter in the actual game itself. Thankfully that isn't the case and playing the game itself generally matches what is on display during its decent-length playtime (the game took me about 6 hours to complete, spread over two 3-hour streams..) If I had one criticism of the game it's that its dialog sequences can go on a bit long, with no voice-acting leaving the player to read through at-times a bit meandering dialog. It's nice that the game has a more fleshed-out world, however... with the player able to wander around hub-like areas during the game's rare downtime moments. The game also has a plentiful amount of 'junk loot' that the player can pick up, with varying color seeming to imply rarity, but these are little more than a way to accrue currency in the game that you then spend on more health or grenade items. There seem to be about 3-4 variants of each type of gun that you can collect somehow. i.e. 3 shotgun types, 3 long-range rifles, 3 SMGS, etc.. You can only equip one of each type, however. I was only able to discover about half of the weapons in my first playthrough, so I'm not sure if I had to find these in the environment or how to unlock them. My only other minor complaint is that a 'ping' or HUD indicator kind of showing the player where to go after they have cleared a room or a story moment would be kind of nice to have, but the levels are never too large that you get super lost in them. Other reviewers have complained about the imprecise nature of the aiming in the game, but it didn't strike me as being too off the mark from what I intended (while using gamepad...) Sure, it will occasionally auto-aim at the wrong enemy than what you intended, but it's rare that this happens and never bad enough that it leads to your death. ANNIE's difficulty is challenging but overall fair on a Normal playthrough. The game's music is great, ranging from haunting horror-esque synths to emotional orchestral scores. The graphics have cool, violent effects as you shred through the variety of enemies with colorful backgrounds. The standout moments in the game are the boss fights, with their attacks filling the screen and requiring precise gameplay from the player akin to a SHMUP or Bullet Hell style game. All-in-all I really enjoyed ANNIE, I just think the dialog was a bit overdone and the translation was sometimes a bit off (when playing through in English..) but this is a minor complaint as the game itself is very fun to play. For a small studio having put this together, I applaud the effort and hope other people also check this out!!

First off if you like twin stick shooters or 2.5 graphic style games, well then I think you are going to love this game. Also this game uses voxel graphics which work really well, and when you shoot certain objects in the game they break into a shower of cubes, so if you don't mind minecraft/ Lego type graphics then read on. 😁 Iam not going to get into the story as that will come in when you play it, but it's not very deep as this is a shoot em up. At the beginning of the game it feels like a Alien shooter game, if you know them games on steam. But after a little while when you enter the subway for me it feels slower paced like resident evil vibes which is no bad thing. You go around the areas looking in rooms for ammo, health and other stuff from vending machines which prompt a symbol that something is in them or there could be something worth picking up. But as I said iam sure this game will change pace at times, which adds to the game variety. As you can see the game is in early access at the moment, but the game only works on keyboard and mouse so far which works a treat. But the developers are working on controller support as from the time of this review. OK!, to sum up this review in early access state. For what the game offers so far is awesome and another chapter is promised coming very soon. The developers are very active in the discussions now it seems, so any bug reports to tell them or any improvements you would like implemented, as iam sure they will listen to. For the very low price this game is at, well I must recommend it to anyone, well if you like these style games. So support them and buy it and give it a go as it's there first game and very good to. 😊 P. S The bosses look awsome in the video. 😁👍

May update this later after logging some more hours, but pleased with the purchase so far. The game isn't perfect, there are a number of hiccups, one of which almost made me quit at one point, but if you can power through it's faults and lack of polish, there's a really solid game underneath. The game plays largely like a horde mode shooter from an isometric perspective... it combines a few errant RPG proggression concepts in the form of equipment, and occasional segments with sort of platform/chase reaction based elements, but it's primarily a "kill all waves/survive all waves" style setup in the intense "gameplay" segments... quotes because a fair amount of the game is a bit more free-form exploration/scavenging... it would be going to far to call it a sandbox/open world, to be sure, but there's a definite aspect of exploration and I quite enjoyed that bit. The game gets by pretty well for a voxel title... some of the evironmental physics/particle effects are pretty neat, and the character portraits look sharp and crisp... more importantly, they work well with what they have, setting moods like "empty desolation of the frozen wastes", "Chaos of a burning city", "Dark oppressive corridors taunting jump scares" etc quite keenly despite being low res resources. Now that said, while the game contains elements of physics, it's not REALLY a physics game... there are occasions where you may be able to kick obstacles to confound enemy pathfinder, knock over crates to create a second point of ingress to an area, or trigger situational effects such as luring enemies into hazards or kicking flaming barrels into a row of enemies, but these are more things the game occasionally sets you up for rather than mechanics you are consistently free to employ... they're nice icing on the shooter cake for vareity, but it's not REALLY a physics based shooter. This also gets into my biggest issue with the game, which is the difficulty... As mentioned, I almost quit and filed for a refund after dying over a dozen times on the 3rd or 4th encounter (the fight in the road with panicking cars)... the "Difficulty" setting seems to largely impact damage dealt by enemies, which has minimal impact since the vast majority of my deaths are from being surrounded (at which point "how fast does this hopeless situation kill you" becomes rather moot) or environmental hazards that are one-hit kills... that said, these situations aren't overwhelmingly frequent, so if you can power through them, this isn't a blisteringly difficult "git gud scrub" title that's totally unforgiving, so much as the difficulty can swing a bit much in parts. The game also has some QoL issues, I'm unsure if/when you can manually trigger a save to safely quit, as much as I enjoy exploring quest indicators and a map would be really nice as an option to toggle/ignore as I chose, and the game could really use a faster reload time for those areas where I do take a dozen+ tries to clear something (it's not SLOW, but it could be faster due to the sheer number of reloads required taking play time/wait time uncomfortably comporable). The writing also could use work... it seems like it wants to be taken seriously in some places, but is too brusque or cheezy most of the time for me to do so... there seems to be fairly profound issues with translation or typos or something as well, because the integrity of certain lines of dialogue really plumets in places... I can typically make sense of what was meant to be said, but it's immersion breaking at best. Now that said, where it fails in things like dialogue, codex, and narration, it actually does a really good job on mood/ambience... the game is remarkably eerie and chilling in places to extents games with far more sophisticated graphics like recent Resident Evil remakes and such fail... all while maintaining pretty bombastic and over-the-top action in other places. It's a hard line to walk, since empowering a player makes gameplay more enjoyable but tends to negatively impact a horror vibe, but this title does a really solid job in this department. This game has many familiar trappings, but is quite different from anything I've played... and in a way that's very refreshing. It combines novel presentation with very servicable (if less novel) gameplay, and I'm quite enjoying it. If something different sounds good to you, it's worth your consdieration
