It's SNES final fantasy. If you have played it, you should buy it again. If you love final fantasy, just buy it

Really like this game. Played old version of it SNES and DS before, first time playing Pixel Remaster. Arguably the first FF with much more focus on its story, which is a decent one too especially in the first half I think. The soundtrack is amazing as always, and the battle music is the best one yet I think. Of all the Pixel Remaster games, only FF6 I'd consider a better game than this, and only because that one is a masterpiece of its own. Like the Pixel Remasters before it, I recommend playing the game with all Boost rates set to 0.5x to get a similar experience to the original. Although its a bit slower leveling, the Pixel Remaster does make various changes that lowers the overall difficulty. As with the other games, I didnt feel there was any need for grinding, just followed the story and explored naturally, collected all the chests and hidden items. As I always had 'Encounters' set to on per default, there was plenty of Exp to go around. Although when it comes to FF4 in particular, its been the most challenging experience thus far I think, but also the most engaging. The last dungeon was brutal, loved it. I made it to the final boss at around lvl 45, but he was a huge difficulty spike so had to resort to getting a few more levels towards the very end to actually beat him at level 55. I know there are better players who've beaten the game at even lower levels too ofc. While FF1 was mind-numbingly easy just auto-battling until the last dungeon, FF2 and FF3 felt like it got a well-balanced power curve with 0.5x rates, and FF4 is still not as difficult as its DS version on Hard (which was originally the only difficulty before they made an Easy mode and called that Normal instead and the old default renamed Hard). Anyways, just a recommendation for those who enjoys a bit of that "old-school" challenge. Ofc one can also put the Boost setting to x1/2/4 rates if only want to experience the story or whatever. All in all, a great game - the best one up to this point in the series I think 'most' agree on - and definitely a classic worth playing.

I remembered playing Final Fantasy as a kid. I’ve always considered FFVI (III when I first played it) to be my favorite game. When I saw the Pixel Remaster bundle on Steam, I ended up buying it. I was excited to play FFVI (especially to hear the new version of the final boss music), but I decided to go through the entire series in order. I’m glad I did! Playing these games in order really gives a sense of how much the series has evolved and grown over the years! I would say that, for anyone that hasn’t played them before, the Pixel Remasters are a great way to play! For all the games, they have added an orchestrated soundtrack. In addition, the ability to adjust your XP, Gil, and other gains can really adjust the pace and challenge of the game! Also, I found that the ability to turn random encounters off and on at a click of a button to be very convenient…as was the ability to Quick Save at any time. I also enjoyed the option to speed up combat, letting the players autofight with your last used command…that helped a lot too. Sure, if you’re looking for a more difficult “original” experience, you don’t have to use these features (in fact, you can even adjust the music back to the original soundtrack!). But I think for most gamers, it was a welcome change. I took some notes as I played to help me write these reviews, which I’m doing all at once after finishing the entire bundle. So, for this particular game: Finally, we start to see a large focus on character development! Sure, sometimes it is a bit tropey and over-the-top...but it is there! We've got a planned storyline, with events and things that happen and everything! The exact pacing and plotline can be hit or miss...but compared to the prior games, we now have a story-based game, rather than a background story going on. Also, I loved the boss music! The remastered orchestral music was great...really got you pumped up! At first, combat was a bit iffy...I felt like I was missing more often than not, but this improved a lot the further into the game I got. Even though I had played a lot of FF6 growing up, after playing the NES trio before this, I felt like I was going slow with the ATB system. If felt really fast paced and hard for me to keep up, at first. Turns out that this played out fine. There were a couple of weird decisions throughout the game with dungeon design, but the characters more than made up for it. Personally, I found the constantly revolving characters a bit off-putting...you never really know who you are going to have, who you should build up...but you get used to it after a while and the storyline stays focused. I also liked seeing characters attempt to use spells outside of combat, for storyline reasons. I feel like you don't see this often, even within Final Fantasy games, so that was fun. I wish even more modern games did that...seeing a clinic where the doctors are casting Cure, for example. More than the prior games, this is a game that focuses on the story it is telling, and has the characters come in and out of the game depending on their relevancy to what is currently happening. I'm not sure I really liked this, but I cannot decide if it was because I was "used to" FF6's large roster and picking who I wanted or not. I can see why many people state this is their favorite Final Fantasy, but at the time of playing I wasn't sure how much of their (or my own) viewpoint was clouded by nostalgia. In the end, this was a great game and I enjoyed the increased focus on story and the excellent music.

It's a good version for the classic Final Fantasy. I started playing FF4 on PSP first and I remember how wonderful it was with it's art but this version, it gave me the taste of the retro/classic games. I loved it and I'm targeting to get 100% achievements because it's so fun to play and I'm enjoying it's story, soundtrack, and world.

In all honesty, I do not like this game at all. I used to think my least favorite was FF8, but that was before I completed the wretched slog that is FF4. I would replay nearly any other entry in the series, but there is no way in hell I'm ever touching this one ever again. Ever. While it's true that, among the first six games in the Final Fantasy series, each entry has a heavier focus on narrative than the one before it, the leap from III to IV is the most pronounced in that regard. This paradigm shift comes at a heavy cost, however: FFIV has absolutely no character advancement game whatsoever. Yes, you level up and gain numbers, but every character's job is fixed, and there are no decisions to be made for any of them. To make matters worse, party members come and go at the whims of the narrative, so you can't even develop strategies based on your composition -- at least not for long. So again, zero player agency. For gamers like me, who love that part of JRPGs (fiddling with the party) as much as the stories, this is extremely unfortunate. I forgave the same situation in FF1 because it was first (and very, very short), but at this point in the series, it's a huge disappointment. That said, it's still Final Fantasy. The story is, obviously, extremely good. In fact, this is one of the most beloved FF games for that very reason. So while I personally do not consider FF4 a great game overall, I do concede that it tells a story every FF fan needs to experience firsthand, and I recommend it ONLY for that reason. Just use a guide and treat it like a visual novel with a lot of combat, because that's exactly what it is.
I respect men like you. Men with courage. But you are a slave to your emotions…
As someone who never experienced Final Fantasy games growing up, I had relatively low expectations for the original five in the series (obviously FFVI is a masterpiece and I’ll play it eventually I PROMISE). The first game was pretty standard and had little to no story but fun turn based combat. The second was boring and tried experimenting with a leveling system that didn’t quite meet the mark. The third game was also pretty boring but the class system was cool. It feels like FF4 is where Square finally figured out how they wanted these games to play out and meet the expectations of gamers while solidifying a legacy. The intro is one of the coolest parts of this game - watching Cecil take to the sky with a banger intro theme. It led me to think I was playing the bad guy at first. Watching Cecil struggle to figure out who he is along with the people he meets is very endearing. The cast of characters and their stories intertwining was very cool and I can imagine this was a breath of fresh air when it originally came out in 1991. Without spoilers, the end game areas were VERY cool and I never expected the story to take us there. It kind of gives The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom vibes… or TOTK maybe took the idea haha. As far as the pixel remaster goes, it’s great and is identical to the rest of the remasters. I can’t compare it to the original FF4 but I imagine it’s a massive step up. I used a guide for my playthrough and from what I understand, there were many QoL improvements. I was planning to 100% the game but the post-game grinding looked AWFUL soooo I passed on that. Verdict: ⭐8/10⭐ Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite of the first four games in the series - the characters were all incredible, combat was fun, the final boss & final theme was great as usual. I just didn’t really appreciate the post game stuff. For a game that originally came out in 1991, this was pretty great!

Basically the greatest RPG of all time that all others are judged against. Only a few have come close. FF4 nailed it on every level and the Pixel Remaster version is a quality remake.

So this is the only top down FF game I've played, but from what I've seen and read it is pretty dang linear. And that's not a bad thing, but if you're looking for a game where you can build your own team or choose jobs for your team members, this isnt really the game for you. I liked it a lot, the story was very charming, so it has its pros and cons. I can see why this is such a beloved classic.
