It's... OK. But in a crowded market for squad-level tactical games, the minor annoyances add up quickly. Tedious walking using WASD when you're not in a turn-based fight. An annoying announcer with an overexcited voice. Consequential choices to make with no guidance until after you get it wrong. If it were a truly unique idea, then these annoyances could be overlooked. But every idea in this game has been done better in another title.

A good, if somewhat short, take on an XCOM-like. Though its clearly not the hottest tech around, and its not really bringing anything new to the genre, its a fun game if you like said genre,

A really fun and well made indie game. The tactical combat areas are very well designed with alot of twists to keep it interesting. The exploration areas with puzzles were mostly fine, some of the puzzles with the camera were annoying and sometimes felt like just time wasters, but overall they are a good break between combats.
The main cons are its a relatively short game, there is no map to help on the exploration levels (like trying to find all the goodies and optional arenas) and a somewhat shallow progression system.
Overall a strong recommend if you like tactical combat shooters. Game is a good price and I look forward to what the studio does for their next game (hopefully with a larger budget).

A quick TBS game with a great concept.
However, Showgunners lacks significant tactical depth and doesn't delve into its setting and characters as much as I had hoped.
If you can grab it on sale for $15 or less, it's worth checking out.
But if you're after the best in the genre and won't accept anything less, it's probably better to stick with XCOM, especially with all the available mods, and Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children.

I'm surprised this game isn't more known. It takes the Xcom reboot combat formula and puts it in a completely different context and it works amazingly.

I'm going to say something controversial - XCOM is great but it's overrated. The rebooted versions, that is. I didn't play the originals from the 90s. I'm sure originals were groundbreaking when they came out. The rebooted versions, however, seemed a little too simplistic for the modern era. Are they tactical and exceedingly challenging? Absolutely. I liken them to Chess in that regard. On top of that, the first reboot in 2012 had emergent gameplay issues (the most viable strategy was almost always to move and overlook ad infinitum) that were poorly addressed with arbitrary ticking bombs in the sequel. That's when I fell off of the franchise.
Showgunners is an XCOM-like that fixes these issues while also building a more immersive future dystopian Running Man / Smash TV-style world. You control your character as she moves from encounter to encounter, solving logic puzzles along the way. The larger encounters are instanced as a separate room within a level, but you will also be "ambushed" several times as you move through a level. It all functions as a means of tying the encounters together with the world your character inhabits.
For contrast, XCOM is very instanced, with each encounter occurring before and after a series of menus. You don't control an avatar, and there's no character to help you become invested.
Breaking up each level in Showgunners is a hub where you sleep between episodes of the show you're a contestant on. You can move around and get some story exposition as you speak with other contestants. In the hub and each level episode, you can be interviewed and sign autographs to goose certain traits and unlock buffs. And, of course, you also gain experience during encounters which can be put toward stat trees.
The gameplay itself is what you'd expect of a tactics game. Characters have different traits, weapons, and perks. At it's core, you have the two-action system. Id est, each character spend 1-2 turns moving and/or 1 turn committing an action. Of course, there's also the half- and full-cover system for characters in cover.
Lastly, I don't want to understate how good the special abilities are. I can't quite explain it but about midway through game, you get to feeling pretty darn clever when you start stringing them together and realize how much devastation you wrought in a turn that once seemed hopeless. They're just really intelligently designed and implemented.
ShowGunners is a fantastic turn-based tactics game that evolves gameplay elements in a way the XCOM reboots struggled to. It also adds in elements that deepen the gameplay without overcomplicating it. The UI is easily deciphered and gives you all the information you need to make an informed decision during a fight. If you lose a fight, it's because you made a bad decision, not because the RNG looked unfavorably upon you. There's no unnecessary fluff or random encounters to artificially inflate its length. You'll get close to 20 hours during your playthrough. If that's not enough, play it again. You won't regret it.
Nothing wrong with being straight forward
Manages to scratch that x-com itch for me in terms of game-play. Although it's simpler in the sense that it doesn't have character/ class customization or varied missions, the game doesn't drag it's experience out and knows how to play to it's strengths. There were plenty of other aspects to enjoy. Particularly it's use of graphic novel illustration for story telling, to small chunks of character interaction & world building whichh left me wanting more.
Definitely looking forward to a sequel.
It's got a great foundation and plenty of things to build on. If Artificer decides to continue to buff this out, especially with it's class types and RPG elements, it would be an immediate hook for me.

So far so good! 7.7 hrs in and enjoying it. XCom Lite, nice combat without the base building, researching, recruiting, etc. got it on sale and would recommend for $12.
