A bit too easy, but really fun game for the price.

Surprisingly good game. There's feeling of old nes/snes games contra style (easier though, at least in the beginning), good controls and good and, most important, fitting soundtrack. Game visuals are really detailed for nes-like indie game, i clearly see, that there is good pixel-art artist. Worth all it's price and even more. Would like to see more games of this studio.
For a dollar, I can't complain.
Short and easy 80/90 Contra style game. 1 hour is enough to beat, maybe another one to complete it, unfortunately, I'll pass. Played for the dog.

I usually pay up to $10 for similar retro games so getting a decent one for $1 feels pretty good. It's clearly meant to resemble Contra , although you can't shoot at an angle which limits your approach to fighting. You can pick one of three characters, but as far as I can tell they are mostly cosmetic. Each character also gets a unique ride during the driving stage - I like that kind of attention to detail, even though it doesn't do anything. There are 7 stages that last about 10-15 minutes, you can complete the whole thing under 2 hours. The difficulty is pretty fair, once you complete any level you can start from that point, but you will loose your current high score. Unfortunately, there is a way to farm points to infinity with extra lives, I hope the developer will fix that. Aside from that, I was surprised that you can remap a controller (used F310), and it has a decent soundtrack to go along with nostalgic gameplay.
Pros:
+ nice retro gameplay, music and aesthetic + 3 characters, bosses with multiple stages + can remap controller (used F310) + fair difficulty & can replay completed levels + achievements & leaderboard
Cons:
Character Variety - it would be nice if each character had a different sub-weapon or mode of fire. Right now they all have a grenade as a secondary weapon. Maybe they can replace it for rocket or laser for 2 of the character. Highscore Abuse - there seems to be a way to grind points by abusing the respawns on extra lives. They should only spawn once per stage. Overall Thoughts: 7/10 For $1 this game has a polished and faithful retro design, about as good as it gets around $5 price range. If you grew up with NES or GEN I think you will enjoy those 90 minutes.
Review By: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
Biolab Wars. When I first got to know this game, I honestly was having doubts, whether it would meet my expectations or not. Then, when I played the game, WOAH! it was more than what I expected! I was glad that I got this game. Oh, why, you ask? That's because this game reminds me a lot of the CONTRA series, and it shares a few similarities too. With that, let's see the details. Pros: ---------- + Good Gameplay Mechanic: Just like the Contra series, it has simple and easy controls. + Nice Enemies & Bosses: The enemies are decent and nice as they are worthy to check it out. As for the bosses, they are surprisingly a little bit hard to fight. Some of them even have transformations too! Neat! + Good Musics: It has a nice and fitting musics for all the levels, including the bosses' fight. I must say, the musics really good! + Good Graphics: As it turns out, this good 8-bit NES graphics are above average. The backgrounds, the heroes and everything are nice. Just like in the good ol' 80's style games. Sweet! + Special Feature: You can have certain unexpected animals joining you the fight! That's cool and new! Cons: ---------- - No 2 Players: Sadly, this is a single player game. As a platformer shooter game, having 2 players would be nice. - Same Sub Weapons: Unfortunately, all of the heroes have the same sub-weapons. It'd be nice to have different sub-weapons for each hero. - No Up / Down Aim: Yup, you can't aim up or down and you can only shoot straightforward. A slight letdown in this. So, in a nutshell, Biolab Wars is a nice decent game that worthy of the attention. This is especially true if you are a fan of the Contra series, which seriously, resembles a lot. I know I had a fun time enjoying shooting the enemies in this game. ( 6 / 10 )

This game tries to be an old school run and gun but fails horribly due to the terrible level design. However this issue isn't a kind that gives frustration, it makes the game super easy, bland and boring. Literally every level is just couple of enemy types placed around randomly. There is no thought behind enemy placements at all, they are just there and creator doesn't do anything interesting with them. Boss fights are quite bland as well. They have one or two specific attacks and keep repeating those. I especially find the chicken boss's laser attack quite lame. It always shoots at the exact same place. Had like 100 mins in the game and already got all achievements. Achievements like "kill all enemies" is not fun nor anything skillful. Also you want people to beat the game with each character even though they all work exactly same? That's not good. So overall game has serious design issues and offer nothing interesting. Just a bland run and gun game.

Looks like a Contra experience in the screenshots, but everything is too "not enough". The resemblance is just on the very surface and just enough to make some screen shots that will sell the game. Not expensive but I rather regret paying for this.

Biolab Wars is a schlocky ode to 80's 8-bit shooter platformers, that initially seems like it only takes stylish inspiration from that era, but by the end has alas descended into committing some of it's worst game-play mechanics. At first it's a relatively enjoyable romp, with the limited colour palette and grainy visuals of an 8-bit title, yet handling more smoothly than the game's it is aping. Up until stage 6 I found this to be a quite fun mega-mix of just about every set-piece you can think of from other games, and with a campy tone to the presentation that raised a chuckle. This is a game where you can play as a dog in a robotic assault suit...it's not exactly serious. Unfortunately by stage 6 they start introducing some horrible tendencies that drag it down from that enjoyable beginning. Imagine a level that has conveyor belts hanging in mid-air over pits of spikes, and with enemies flying around or shooting at you. Go that picture in your head? doesn't sound so bad does it? "hey! we want to ramp up the challenge, and all of this here shee-yit worked before in someone else's game, so why not ours?" Welllllll........yeahhhh, but nooooo, cause you done gone fudged it up. The moment you land on a conveyor belt it all goes to poo-poo, and turns from being a responsive shooter into a "why the heck is this suddenly so clunky and frustrating". You have literally a nano-second to respond before getting flung off, and that's if it responds at all. This part of the game feels awful, and actually plays like an 80's 8-bit game, rather than just looking like one, which isn't a good thing. By now I'm about half an hour in? forty minutes or so? Whatever, I'm done with it. Fun at first, but it sucks by this point, as I don't like the stilted game-play of old shooters. Whilst it initially felt somewhat different, with more fluid movement and mostly free of bad design choices, it dropped the ball here. I guess if you have the patience then this is well worth the cheap cost. It does play quite nicely, both game-play wise and technically. But for me it slipped from "inspired by, but without the worst sh*t" to "full on re-producing the worst sh*t" and so throws away any good will.

This game is really fun with a controller, it's one of the better contra-like games out there. The gameplay is pretty solid, the graphics are somewhere between 8 bit and 16bit and the music is outstanding. Some of the tracks on this game are so good I could listen to them while driving around in my car, so good. If you enjoy sidescrolling action games with the occasional minor platforming, this is great for the price.
