Circle Empires is a simplistic, fresh take. I truly love what this game is trying to do, for the otherwise dying RTS genre. It is also a terribly designed and executed game. But first, lets look at what it does right: - Limiting Micromanagement* - Unique Gamemodes (some of them boil down to same thing but several are very good) - Simple Design I cannot stress enough how much I appreciate these changes, and how much more fun it is for new players. This is the kind of game that RTS needs. However, this game itself, is not good. Lets take a look at some of the major problems. 1. Army composition never changes (particularly compared to their own older games, now each faction only has one or two unique units? Guess for multiplayer balance?) 2. Needless complexity that boils down to knowledge checks (you need X unit or you will lose every time) 3. Micromanagement (I honestly thing they partially solved this by accident, judging by the changes they made for this game. Why did they add mountable units, caravans, and a ton of micro required units??) 4. Snowballing, endlessly. In an already snowball-y genre. (If you build your army correctly, you will gain 10-80% more power by attacking. Not taking a penalty for engaging is one thing, getting stronger is another) Lets pull out some examples: - Adding in multiple units that buff your own units. On paper this is fine, but in practice this means these units are REQUIRED. - Caravans in theory are fine, but in practice they often get stuck and need babysitting. - knowledge wizard (know I have name wrong sorry) give your units 100% experience boost, this is absolutely insane, seeing how the experience you got from fighting was already way too strong. A level 3 unit is oftentimes 8x as strong or more of the base unit. I may sound like I've had one or two bad experience with this product, but I have 4 hours here and closer to 50 on the first game. I truly believe this is a step in the right direction for RTS games, its just this one in has major issues. Its soooo close to being a good or even great game, but its held back by the devs adding whatever sounds cool to them at the time. Also it crashes at higher unit counts, keep that in mind.
