A text adventure that is a rather unique game and will piss you off but still keep you coming back for more. The game tells you at the beginning that you'll miss a lot, but you don't realize how often you actually will until it decides life or death for an engagement. A true learning experience every time you start over with a new character, I love the in depth style of the games different stats and scenarios each of them are used in. You can be an amazing swordsman but you have to remember, you're still mortal and not the main character. So if you try to be the hero then you might just put yourself at a severe disadvantage and end up dying in an otherwise promising campaign. You have to be lucky as well with the percentage based attacks but you'll soon realize the AI goes off of the same style of combat so it's not like you only have to deal with missing a bunch. I've played through a lot of characters already but I'm still trying to top my personal best (finishing the game as a Centurion with awards). The game offers a lot of replay ability and it's also rewarding as well when you win fights and unlock texts you haven't seen on previous lives. There's a lot of meat in this game and I recommend it a lot for those who like history, and want to engage in something different compared to the usual hack and slash or shooter games.

The review complaining about RNG is not wrong, but I still find the game enjoyable and unique. Roguelike or Roguelight should be higher in the tags for this game. It definitely plays like one and users who don't expect that will be disappointed. But if you go in expecting that experience it's a solid 7/10 game I can definitely recommend, especially if you get it on sale.

A Legionary's Life is a unique Rogue-Lite game, where you manage Stat and Skill increases with Morale and Fatigue in order to survive the many battles to come.
If you take the time to read and experiment with this game's mechanics, it leads a surprisingly deep and rewarding experience. The interplay between your mental stats and physical stats in weapon handling and in how often you act in combat has been fascinating to play around with along with the different paths and events that you can experience based off of your stats and morality.

I have played this game so many times my top ten play through all finished with the highest rank, and the hall of fame doesn't have room for all of them.

I'm writing this review after just completing all the achievements for this game. Honestly one of the best RPG games I've played, it really puts you in the shoes of just an ordinary legionary at first. As you keep playing the game and get a few playthroughs you get more and more points you can spend on enhancements. This severely increases the replayability as you progress your stories from one of an ordinary legionary to that of a renowned centurion with some of the best swordsmanship in the army and potentially a game ending as a consul. The historical accuracy is great and if you take the time to read each one of the texts you can really get immersed in the story.
I've tried both this game and Never Second in Rome the supposed sequel to A Legionary's Life and honestly keep coming back to this game, I almost get overwhelmed with the amount of decisions and other complex combat and UI inside of Never Second in Rome. A Legionary's Life is the perfect blend of RNG combat and a level of complexity that makes you feel as if each decision matters but dosen't overwhelm you and has a reason of common sense.
Overall, would highly recommend this game if you're looking for something that feels like you're in the shoes of a Roman soldier with aspects of gambling, raging at your own luck, and fights that will have you stressing with whether you should send an attack with low odds or hope his attack misses and you can counter, overall a very enjoyable experience for the casual autistic RNG semi-historybuffed lunatic.

It's nice, but every time I die from trying something out or trying something new, I restart in the SAME BEGINNING! Same EXACT situation, with the same exact battles. This game seems REALLY cool, but the repetition gets old. If there were slightly different backstories, or different starts, THEN it would be an 8/10 instead of a 3/10. I had a BLAST playing it the first and second time, fully immersed. Then I kept dying(didn't mind that) and going BACK to the same old point. It felt like I've already discovered everything, or that I should instead watch a speed run vid and put it on slowmotion mode to be able to read all the nice story text. If only you could start out as different people in that same army for the same war, or start as a gaul, or start as a different legionary with a different army...
