Oldie but goody. Simple mechanics but good variation and strategy available. A bargain, almost free on sale.

I won't recommend this game for beginners 'cause the AI is so hard even on Easy and if you attacked the enemy, it suddenly resigns / surrenders. Remove the surrender option for AI. We cannot enjoy attacking because of that.

The Age of Empires series is one of the most well known strategy base building games and for a good reason , from gameplay to mechanics this game is just amazing.
It even features the original 1997 game graphics as a bonus for the OG players!!!
Also the campaign is remade to correct the historical inaccuracies the previous game had.

Performance is bad, when you zoom out it's like 15fps plus other problems. Considering all the civs and campaigns are in Age of Empires II I don't see why turning back to this game.

Fun game, not too challenging to start with, but gets tougher as you go on. Suitable for kids and adults, harmless fun that you can get lost in for hours

tl;dr: Good game, but not as good as AoE2. Buy it to play against friends or complete your collection.
The good: The game feels way more modern that the last time I played the original version. The graphics improvements are nice and the QoL improvements are very welcomed.
The bad: The game, even when upgraded, still feels kind of slow. I wouldn't say it doesn't have its charm, but it certainly isn't as good as AoE2.
I would recommend purchasing this game only if you plan on playing with friends or for completing your collection on Steam.

This was the greatest game of my childhood. Between the original, 2, 3, and Mythology this was the pinnacle of AoE gaming for me. I played tens of thousands of hours growing up and it taught me so much about history. My only complaint would have been the original OST was way more atmospheric but if you have the original audio files that's an easy fix. Easily 10/10.

Age of Empires is still a good game After a relatively straightforward time guiding the Egyptians to supremacy, the campaign mode tasks you with building a Greek state, starting with a small agricultural hub. Yet you've barely erected your town centre when those red-skirted sods come to smash it with their clubs. Guys, take your war mongering antics somewhere else and piss off im trying to lay the foundations here for a great empire Don't worry you will not be forgotten in the purge. Age of Empires has always been a challenging game its a Classic game but you can still see and face the problems bugging the game.
Graphiclly its ok dated but still ok

Age of Empires 1 Definitive Edition is a great game. It is a very good remaster, especially after all the updates. The graphics and the music are way better. They also added a lot of quality of life improvements. You can still select classics style if you want the original feeling of the game. Only downside is that the pathfinding still is bad. They improved it, but still it can be annoying at times. But then again is it really Age of Empires 1 if it didn't have pathfinding issues? Played all the campaign missions and had a lot of fun. I definitely recommend this game to RTS and AEO gamers!

Like Command & Conquer, and unlike its successor AoE2, I think AoE is a game that didn't age well, and that didn't really need a remaster (as opposed to a complete remake).
Saddly, while C&C and Red Alert got a very good remaster, with a lot of extra content and cool stuff, this AoE DE is just AoE with better graphics and nothing else. No new campaign, no new unit, no new civilization, no nothing. Just the good old campaigns we've played back in 1996 IIRC.
What's worse, the game sometimes feel less good than it used to be. Namely, by the time I'm writing this review (mid-2025), it seems the AI of most campaign is absolutely broken. It will usually attack you right off the bat with everything it has (even when it's clearly not meant to), will get stuck by forests and rivers, and usually seldom do anything all game long, even when playing on hardest difficulty.
Leaving the game in such a terrible state should probably have been a warning for what was to come with AoE3 DE: when it feels like a game isn't successful enough, Microsoft will abandon it without a second thought.
