You play as Alex Mercer, the love child of Venom and a Resident Evil boss. What's not to love?
P.S. The crashing game fix can be found in the community page, and is legit and only takes 1 minute. I agree the devs should have been professional and fixed it beforehand, especially because it only takes 1 minute, but don't let that stop you from buying great classic while it's on discount.

The video game works well for me after modifying it and configuring an .ini file. It has texture packs, but it's a video game from 2009, so don't expect RDR2 or similar. And the Xbox Series controller works perfectly for me; I have Steam input enabled.
CPU AMD
GPU Nvidia latest drivers
Windows 10 22h2
All the configuration was thanks to a website, which I used as a guide to get the game working, as it didn't even run the first time.

as janky and punishing prototype is at times, i actually enjoyed it. i played the demo on xbox 360 a decade ago so when i finally got to play it on pc, it was like if spider man, shadow the hedgehog, doom, resident evil & GTA had a baby (no i am not exaggerating that's how the game felt).
my main issue was the story & gameplay. in the middle of the game, i couldn't tell who the final boss would be. i thought it would be
elizabeth greene the way her boss fight felt and i HATED fighting her (i died probably 5-6 times)
. i was trying to understand this game as much as i could but it feels like it doesn't make sense sometimes.
i could try to recommend this game if you like a hard challenge and is okay with janky mechanics but expect the gameplay to be long because i played under the assumption it was going to be short but not TOO short.
good game, felt like the story was hard to follow

the game is unplayable I have constantly 40-50 fps, a lot of bugs, bad optimization, quite hard to play on keyboard with the lack of precise movements and when I bought it I couldn't open it unless i turned off some of the cpu's. Also at some point there is one mission which is quite impossible to finish because I'm constantly attacked unable to move or escape the enemies. It's a shame such a good game got treated like this

the portation of this game is terrible, unless you're running seven processors OR LESS it clocks out of work and crashes, just straight goes to bed. you can go into Task Manager, then Details, then find steam.exe, RMB it and Set Affinity and then unselect all and then manual select processors 0-6 to make it run on a modern machine
the combat of this game is terrible, if an enemy doesn't die in one hit then its entire moveset boils down to artificial difficulty and being stunned for an hour, and all of your end of fighting boils down to "select the one that hits hard" and spam two buttons, occasionally hold down either of the other two once you've reached critical mass to use this games equivalent of an ult
the story of this game is a third of the way to being decent, but lacks any real message beyond "U.S. government can be kinda evil sometimes" and doesn't really try to deliver anything in the way of food for thought
i can't imagine a timeline in which this game deserves a sequel but i hope the one that somehow exists is better than this one

you might have better luck running this game on a console emulator. my PC isn't top of the line these days but more than enough to handle a game like this.
cut scenes are choppy, unsynced between audio and video, game play is a bit choppy too. for some reason steam says this game wasn't means for a controller, uh, sure. the console version was but for some reason you couldn't be bothered to port that aspect over as well?
thankfully steam input circumvents this issue but the game just feels... lacking from its console version.
this was a really bad PC port.
edit: looks like there is a pretty solid fix here: https://www.nexusmods.com/prototype/mods/52?tab=files
that dealt with most all my problems.
that said, outside of my initial issues the game works like I remember it. I'd highly recommend waiting for it to go on sale as it's not worth the full sale price they typically want for it (the game is decent on it's own but nothing ground breaking.) other than that? its a fun hack and slash sandbox.

This game was a favourite growing up and I'm pleased to say it still cooks... BUT, it has been allowed to become pretty much unplayable on PC, the only way to play being the use of an unofficial fix from Nexus. If you have no experience modding what so ever, I'm afraid you'll either have to learn or give up on playing this game on PC.

tweaking steam with the task manager to be able to play this game is not hard at all. Task master->details->steam->set affinity->tick 4 cores=done (just my experience)
the game is fun and a classic.
Causing mayhem with all the Powers and moves they give you still holds up. the graphics not so much.
Alex is a badass and he got that shi on fr unless you see his face in a cutscene or almost any face for that matter.
The characters leave a lot to be desired, theyre all very bland and i cant remember anyones name. alex is cool enough even without a compelling script. the story/campaign could be cooler and more engaging but that wasnt what i signed up for.
I wanted to wreak chaos with the overexaggerated moves/powers you can play around with and it didnt dissapoint. I was surprised with the amount of individual combat moves they offer (there really are a lot though). most are useless imo as they are overshadowed by a few powers or tactics that make the game too easy. If you want to clear every hive on the map just hijack a chopper again and again. same goes for the military bases.
Sometimes the combat was just way too clunky as well (the movement in general took some getting used to at first). i couldnt shake the feeling that the game was lying to me when it said the dodge roll was effective. especially on that last boss. i wanted to die irl. but i loved the experience & i recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy the cool power system
Will also buy a replica of alex's jacket someday

Seriously, I want my money back.
The game does not start properly and mods and old drivers need to be installed.
However, that was before Windows 10.
The game can no longer be started even with volunteer mods.
Precisely since Win10, it seems there have been cases where the mods alone haven't solved the problem, but now it's critical.
See you later, Alex Mercer!
