Oh, where to start...
On the positive side, the plot is engaging, and the author has finally stopped creating absurd and unnatural scenes, like the one where the protagonist could persuade an enemy to retreat in the heat of battle.
Haken's disappearance was explained, but his character underwent changes. He no longer resembles himself, the fierce wolf we saw in the first book. And while that can be forgiven for what he's been through, the same can't be said about the rest of the characters from Haven.
Bly, Jolon, Tiva, Dena, and others have, at times, lost their individuality—they've been merged into a single personality. The only moments where they truly stand out are in specially written scenes with them, like Bly's training hall sequence.
I suspect this happened because the author, to make their job easier, wrote the main story and romantic moments for one particular character first, then simply copied and pasted the same text for others, making slight adjustments to fit each character. And it’s terrible! This isn't just lazy and a huge misstep for a writer—it strips the interactive book of any replayability or interest, making it flat and bland, like chewed-up gum.
I read the book twice, choosing Jolon and Dena as close companions, and compared to the previous two books, I saw almost no difference between them. Dena is no longer a bookworm, and Jolon is no longer a Huntmaster — now they are mixed becoming one. Their dialogue lines are the same, their activities with the protagonist are the same, even their intimate scenes are the same. Yes, the text is slightly edited, but it’s still the same! (Except for the special events, as I mentioned earlier.) Even in those, you can often catch repeated, copied text with just the name changed. And if it wasn't so noticeable in the previous books, now it literally stands out!
I’d like to single out Dena specifically. In the story, he’s the protagonist’s best friend—they grew up together. But if you don’t pick him as a romantic option or choose his storylines, he’s almost nonexistent throughout the three books. Seriously, as the protagonist’s best friend, … (with that label) … - he should at least get a significant amount of book time, be a constant presence, influence the protagonist, and play a key role in the overall story! But instead, I saw Ahot’s muzzle more often. That old man is everywhere! Since the book two, I’ve been doing everything to push him into the background, but the stubborn geezer keeps coming back, even more frequently in the third book.
I hate writing criticism—it’s unpleasant, and it’s even more unpleasant to read it as the author. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve said what I wanted to say. And despite everything I’ve mentioned, the book is still very interesting and worth the read, so thank you.
