Shooty birdy game, PETA no likey
What nice little free bow and arrow game for the Vive.
Sure, it's nothing big, it might not be anything special. But it actually is a lot of fun and better than other paid bow and arrow games.
What is the game about?
You stand on one spot - so no locomotion - and you shoot in a very nice looking VR forest environment with your bow on birds and ducks. Sounds easy, but as the birds and the dugs fly fast or high you have to time rightly your arrow shots. If you get them, it is a very satisfying feeling.
What I like
* good bow and arrow feeling with the Vive controllers (did not try it with the Oculus)
* nice graphics and good performance
* shooting on real animals instead of goblins, etc.
* leaderboard
* Steam achievements
Where I see room for improvement
* more content (levels, birds, other animals)
* a bit better bow handling
* more different modes
Fun game for free, for the whole family and especial for hunter friends "Weidmannsheil"!
Also a good way to work out your left or right beer-lifting arm, because you mostly aim in the sky so you have to hold your controller a bit higher.
Recommended to give it chance if you own a Vive. Its fun. The graphics and controls are tight, even if its just a simple arcade style shooter. Head aiming on the rift was more entertaining than I thought it would be. Can't wait to see where this project goes. In my one week of diving into VR this is the game I've played the most. The simulation of bow and arrow on HTC with the motion controllers is pretty spot on for me. It is definitely a game of skill requiring fast paced aiming, quick calculation of distance and drop and a good dose of luck. The further gamification of a high score makes repeated playthroughs rewarding and adictive.
Understandably for a game under continued development (I hope!) the content is light. I can see eventually that I will tire both figuratively and literally of playing the same scene with the same 4 varieties of birds. There is a ton of potential to build on here with other game modes and some form of progression through them. I sincerely hope the developers continue to add content for this wonderful simulation. I really wish there was a a neutral recommendation for games like this. You can't beat free and The Lab is a better free experience, but this one does have its own differences worth checking out if you don't want to drop any coin. QuiVR is a better paid experience, however, and makes this game pretty much not worth playing if you have already purchased it.
This one is indeed unique and can be challenging, but it's not very good with the Vive and is rather buggy. I started off floating beside a log, had to select things by looking at it like a silly Oculus, and the instructions lied to me about how to grab an arrow (no, it's not intuitive and simple as described in the "about this game" section). It also wasn't very clear what the options meant in order to choose the Vive-oriented controllers. Once I figured out how to even play, it was an okay experience but it didn't leave me feeling satisfied or challenged like QuiVR and The Lab do. The only goal, as far as I can tell, is shoot a lot of crap in a time window. So the experience doesn't change and outdoing yourself is kinda boring. Nice scenery though and I love the realism. Has potential with updates, but for now I'd say it's only a good intro to a free non-The Lab version of archery. If you can afford it though, QuiVR is my current go-to archery game.
