In spirit this game is cool. it takes what was the good ideas from the 80's/90s original game and expanded them.
But the problem is the game play. The boy is stiff, often not responding to the input leading you to fail a simple puzzle or diyng many times on a very easy boss. On the opposite side some of the jelly beans makes you way to fast or hard to controll (the ball, the rocket and sometimes the bouncy ball to name some). Nothing game breaking..but very annoyng...
a lot of part in the game feel scripted. The blob can litterally fly tropugh platform to reach jelly beans when he want to.. but in other sections when he just need to do a little jump, or move two inmches on the righr..well all of the sudden he just CANT, why? because thats not how the game designer thought you should solve the puzzle, and that very, very disappointing and frustrating
Hit boxes? Just dont talk about them, lets just say you gonna hate them...a lot.
In the original Game you go treasure hunting to have enough cash to buy ammunition for your Blob-gun (not present here), in this one you get tresure to have some random trophy in your house...very old concept to be honest, and also i dont like the theme (but is subjective) but WAIT! here the trophy are actually bonus level, Ok, cool i guess but...
some are kinda tutorial level or very basic ones witch is pointless cause most or the stuff they want to teach you, you already learned from the level you collect the treasure from in the first place -_-' or (worst) you never gonna use it!
I'll do a quik pros and cons
PRO:
-Nice visual and music
-the old game, but expanded and with more to do as it shoudl have been in the first place
-The game DONT hide stuff or trick you. no invisible walls, no absurdly hidden treasure. you miss one? play again you gonna find it very easly
-Boss fight ideas are cool
CONS:
-Gameplay(read all above)
-unskippabole stuff. You miss a treasure before a boss? quit the stage and try again, or to collect it you need to beat the level, and the boss (and in my case go trough the Ending and the credits ) AGAIN!
-Criptic. I know the story cause is the same of the old game...but when is explained here whats going on? there arte difference? Some plot elemnt they want to tell? who know..
-Wasted space. The game dont have invisible walls or very hidden secrets...but sure want you to think he does. There are so many huge areas with NOTHING in it that you will explore just to stop and thought "what am i missing here?"
Bonus CONS: The Mech
You know that you gonna have a Mech, the trailers made it very clear. When is gonna happen? after the game end of course! you can use it only in the last 2 bonus stage. I mean..ok the Mech is overpowered... but OMG pls dont force me to use it ! is super annoyng! The transformation is too long and it makes the same sound over and over and over again at every single input... MY GOD, patch it PLS!
NEUTRAL: in the original game you got all the possible jelly beans (although not infinite...witch was stupid)
In this one you only get the one the Devs want you to have for a specific level. i dont like it, but i do see the point in doing that, making easier to design puzzle and avoid players to break the game. So is a personal taste here.
So should you buy it? I think not
