As a goth with Victorian/Edwardian Age as special interest, I was looking forward to playing this game since it was announced. I have not been disappointed. The pixel art looks amazing, the worldbuilding is very accurate, immersive and detailed. The gameplay isn't hard at all but the puzzles aren't obvious either. It makes it very playable without getting annoyingly stuck. I would have liked to have more charming characters, I mean, I didn't get attached to any of them. But that's not an issue, because the plot was enjoyable anyway. In general, it is a way better game than its predecessor, Nightmare Frames, which I found incredibly crafted but I didn't much like the plot development nor the characters. Just like Nightmare Frames showed the creators' passion and knowledge about horror movies, A.E.H. shows so much love for early horror literature, which I was coincidentally reading at the moment. Now my book wishlist is getting longer! Looking forward to their next games, I will be a faithful follower of these developers. Just two quick spoilery notes:
- I liked that the love story doesn't have a happy ending. It would have been so banal, and Patrick deserves better anyway. - I don't like such a strong fantasy development. That was my issue with Nightmare Frames as well. I like urban fantasy stories to keep the fantasy aspect very light, like supernatural phenomena is fine but different dimensions is... too much. But that is just my personal preference.
