It really breaks my heart to be writing a negative review for a shelter game. The first and second game were fantastically made and immediately had me emotionally invested. This third installation, however, made it rather difficult to feel any emotion besides the frustration over the pace. Of course, any sequel will be different from its predecessor and a direct comparison is always tricky. In this case, let it suffice to say that especially Shelter 2 left big paw-prints to fill and the third game was unfortunately not able to fill them. I'll split this up to give as much feedback while obtaining order as possible. (TL;DR: This could be such a good game and there certainly is a lot of potential here, however, in its current state, it cannot meet the expectations many of us had)
The Good
Let's look at the positive things first: +Might and Delight stuck to their unique style which I really like! +The music is really nice and atmospheric +There is a nice variety of animals in the game +It's really cool to be moving about in a whole herd +There are some really nice interactions with the environment, like with water.
The Bad
Unfortunately, that's already all the positives for me. Let's look at the downsides: -While I do like the style, I also feel like the elephants - and other animals - get a bit lost here. Also, in comparison to previous games, the environment lacks... life. -The music is nice, but there are only two types of music and I've also had vast periods of gameplay where there was no music at all (which might have been a bug) -The variety of animals in the game is nice, but most of them don't really react to you as you move through. Prime example: I walked through a group of resting buffalos and they all just stayed where they were like a static prop. -While I do love the fact that we are now able to move as a herd, this aspect also includes one of the biggest disappointments. There is little to no interaction with the herd, you can call them and they'll show hearts or that they're hungry, you can/have to nurse your calf and you can do an emergency call. And that's it. -Along the same lines, if a predator attacks, you have to stand by and watch. I am fairly certain that elephants wouldn't just stand by and watch their calves being killed, but would act more defensively and attack the attacker. -Though there are some ways to interact with the environment, they're by far not enough. In fact, there are three or four ways to interact with things around you and most of that can be done within the first couple of minutes. -This game in general, but especially in comparison to the previous two installments, lacks emotional investment. I lost my calf to a crocodile and while I was slightly sad, it is nothing in comparison to the heartache I felt if one of my badger or lynx cubs died. -The pace is just too slow. Granted, elephants aren't exactly known to be the quickest and most agile creatures, but I still think that the gameplay massively suffers under this. In my opinion, the dream sequences are also quite disruptive to the gameplay, as it is always the same thing (walking from A to B, as in the whole game) and it further emphasizes the slow pace. I think that a slower pace can be quite nice, but in this case, it was rather tedious. -Lastly, and I think this is one of the biggest issues here, is the gameplay - or lack thereof. There is just very little to do here beyond moving from one point to the other and trying to move so that you get past as much food and as little predators as possible. Getting through the game was rather tedious than enjoyable, no matter how much I wanted to enjoy this.
Ways for improvement
What this game really needs is to be more immersive, to get players emotionally and actively involved. Right now, the gameplay feels rather passive and it is more of a (tedious) walking simulator than what I expected of this game. How can this be achieved? First off, the world needs to become more lively. This means that the animals need to pop out more, there is a huge need to be able to interact more with the environment and animals other than predators should react to the player. After all, a herd of elephants is quite impressive and deserves more of a reaction than buffalos sleeping away the day. I like the story and I think the migration of the herd is a nice storyline in itself, however, it feels like what we have at the moment is a skeleton and should be fleshed out. In Shelter 2, we had the season changes, for example, which made the world and the gameplay more dynamic. More (varied) music would help this as well. We definitely need more ways to interact with our herd - and predators. Even if it is just giving them a personality or having them roam around a bit more to eat some food, I think this would greatly help the gameplay and in building a closer connection to the herd. In my opinion, it is also a vital aspect to be able to defend your herd more actively than is the case at the moment. I think it should be possible to charge at predators instead of just standing there as an onlooker. Right now, I feel like we have a great base here, something that could be made into a great game. However, it does not feel finished. It lacks emotional depth and the ability to actively take part in the story. Gameplay feels frustratingly passice which is worsened by the slow pace. I actually wouldn't mind the fact that we'd have to move from one point to the other, but please at least make the journey worthwhile. There are some beautiful areas in the game, but there is just nothing to do there. Overall, the game feels incredibly passive and at times I would have rather watched it as a movie than played it. BUT like I said, I think there is a lot of potential here, which is why I am looking forward to the development this game will hopefully go through. Sadly, as of now, I cannot recommend this game. To the devs reading this: I am truly sorry I had to write a negative review, because I know you've put a lot of work and effort in this. It is visible when playing the game. But I think that a lot of things were not thought through enough, so now, this game is a raw diamond which has so much potential but cannot shine in its current state.
