A honest review from someone who was very inspired by the game and made my own take on the runner game genre afterwards.
I bought the game twice, first on switch, where I played until level 7 and then on steam where I also played until level 7, but beat that today and is now at level 10, the final one.
This game is very "artsy" as it is a narrative driven runner game, which is a hard to combine genre, when you cannot stop accelerating and the level goes on, yet this game managed to do it quite well.
The Story
The story itself is about the "simplest office clerk" and you got to deliver a message to the queen of ice. The narrative is told with a computer voice, which speaks the lines after reaching thresholds in the level progression, shown as a % value in the bottom.
The story is neat and a good selling point for the game, if you like a dystopian sounding setting but set in the future but this future are the 90s, but let's be honest the narrative sometimes gets overshadowed if you are concentrated to not fall to your game over. Luckily these messages are short, so the damage is minimal.
The Gameplay
The gameplay is easily explained: run, press left or right, reach 99% and the next level trigger.
The challenge comes from the courses you have to run and the speed you build up, just like the progression %, with your turns. If you turn often, you get faster quickly. You can touch floating cubes, which will most of the time lower your speed and it makes it more manageable.
Also here I have to comment, that the left and right inputs when I played today, where a bit irresponsive sometimes. If you press to quickly you miss your "turn window" and your input gets eaten and you fall probably off the platform.
The gameplay sure is fun, the minimalistic nature makes the path clear and I only dislike when you accelerate into the air and while airborn you cannot see where you are, which lets you guess where you need to land and like I said - you cannot panic-adjust that easily, leaving you more vulnerable that it needs to be.
The Level
All levels have a neat atmosphere but many people, me included, dislike level 7 for its very tight passages at way to high speed. I managed after 2 hours probably in total to beat that level if you count every try on both versions I played.
Another level I dislike is level 8, because of the use of physic based explosions for some tiles, which will land on the running track and will hinder your vision, so bad that you miss the track completely with the intended way being that you lowered your speed enough beforehand, which is a bit bad, due to you adjusting at some points to much and now you are locked in being too fast and ending up having to guess when a building explodes on top of you.
My last dislike is the final level and its use of platforms with huge gaps in between, which are not a problem with enough speed, but with a problematic possibility, to get stuck in some gaps and you now have to turn and fall in hope for a saving platforms.
On the other hand though: the final level might be my favourite after all, also because you can save yourself most of the time with how the level is structured,
The Looks
The game has gorgeous 2D sprites throughout every level and I love it. The 3D parts are very simple to say the least, but they are the most clear way to tell the path, they are practical and it does its job, which is appreciated.
There are glitch effects on the screen, which some are more hindering than others. The inconsistency is annoying honestly and the effects also cause uncomfort for some people, which needs to be considered.
After all though...
I love the game.
Like I said I got inspired by the game and made an own take on this genre specific and I am glad I found this game. It is really cool and short and worth its money, even if you only play half the game.
It is fun, very artsy and probably not for everyone, but I recommend it!
