The third of three!
The Spy Fox games are probably a nostalgic memory for a handful of people. I remember having insider jokes from certain lines from them with my parents even after I had long outgrown the games and even until today. The humor is great for kids and sometimes there´s things that I just now understood as an adult and appreciated so much more for their mature nature. The gameplay isn´t long, but the games are generally repayable 2-3 times as the tasks change throughout every playthrough. Overall, these games are still great today and if bought in a sale or in the 5-pack on sale, they´re also absolutely worth it.
Is it still good today?
I´d pretty much answer this one with a “yes”. It’s true that, the smarter you are and the older you get, these games become a bit of a simple side thing rather than a true point-and-click puzzler, but that doesn’t mean there isn´t any challenge to be had from time to time. Some solutions to the puzzles are quite fun and unique, some are very obvious and overall, I’d say there´s a good mix. Based on the tasks of your playthrough, one session might be faster than another and the more you still remember and simply “click everything anyway”, the quicker and more streamlined this game will be. But I´d still argue that for the price asked, especially on sale, you´re able to get a pretty good time out of it.
Aside from the gameplay aspects today, the game runs fluently even on modern machines, has appropriate image scaling and sound mixing, a timeless graphics and animation style and jokes holding up well today. Some things might be a bit stereotypical by todays standards, but they´re harmless in my experience and not trying to address any issues, stir drama or tell you what’s right or wrong. There´s classic jokes and “dad jokes” that simply work and make it enjoyable to listen to… for at least one playthrough. Luckily you can skip anything and everything with the escape key (even if it sometimes makes you miss interesting cutscenes or quick-time events, so be aware!).
So tell me again, why should I buy it?
One simple reason is nostalgia. Play it again if you played it as a child!
Another: There’s nothing other games of this genre, like Deponia or Monkey Island, don´t do aswell or better than this one – SpyFox isn´t special. BUT you don´t play these games only for their gameplay, but also and mostly for their story. And I think this is where SpyFox shines. It’s a made up, light-heated hero beats villain story that most often has an interesting arc and setting to it that feels just “homey”. The story is not commercialized, it’s not out for drama, hunting forced jokes or trying to be super realistic. It’s short and sweet, just as it should be. Some may enjoy it, other might find it boring – that’s up to you. I for one liked the unique ideas and easy to understand concepts and reasons behind the story and world design.
The riddle’s solution
Buy this game and the other two instalments as well. Avoid the cheese and mustard themed games, as they´re completely different and don’t really belong to the series aside from borrowing the theme and characters. If you’re bored out one evening, cozy on the sofa or just want to play through a quick and “brain-off” game, then SpyFox is simply for you. Pick it up whenever, put it away whenever and finish it whenever. There’s no pressure, no timer and most importantly: No harm in doing so. Just play it and have fun. Enjoy the characters and the settings. Enjoy the light-hearted, innocent nature of these old games and have a good time with yourself and a silly fox in a fancy suit.
