Its been an okish game so far.
Sadly cant fully recommend it at this point.
The short version would be: Buy it if you are a collector.
Other than that i dont see much reason not to buy another VSclone instead.
A better one for the same price or less.
The theme is kinda nice. Historical persons kicking ass.
And its one of the better titles in that dark lil niche.
Its pretty much santa claus, hercules, ghandi, the terminator, jesus and mother theresa beating the crap out of the usual suspects. Absolutely glorious.
Depending on the theme of the map you play, you encounter different monsters.
The dark age feat. a graveyard will ofc. throw hordes of spiders, rats, wolves, and a bunch of i guess its bandits and some sort of religious fanatics at you.
And ofc you get the dead man himself as a boss. 3 thumbs up.
Wrestling might stink nowdays, but all hail to the undertaker.
I think theres also priests? and dudes with a shrubbery incl. gravestones on their head?
I must be seeing things. or is this a monty python reference?
Ancient aegypt is just as you guessed throwing things like mummies, scarabs, and ofc again priests and the usual folks wearing animal heads for a mask at you.
Oh and its an auto sidescroller. Which i dont really like so far.
No idea how that will turn out in a longer run.
In the prehistoric area youll ofc run into all sorty of dinosaurs.
And you better keep a look out for those meteorites about to wipe out the dinos.
Definately a classic wrong place and time situation with a dino stampede going on and all.
Clearly not the best neighbourhood.
The whole thing is absolutely great imo.
GFX:
The GFX and are mostly fine id say.
Oldschool looking 2D pixelart, just the way i like it.
The chars including the monsters got a pretty realistic touch incl. some pretty decent animations.
You might remember the times when devs started to simply take pictures with a camera, and spam them all over their games. The chars in "mortal combat", real life actors shot with a video camera then being placed in lets say some oldschool lightgun game, countless shelfs in countless stores in countless games^^
Far better than the cheapish 3D looks some other titles use.
Overall things look rather dark and gritty, just the way i like it.
Whats i dont really like, is how some things just dont fit in. Visually.
You have stuff that looks completely out of place. As if it doesnt belong into this game.
Different GFX styles or whatever you could call it.
UI/OPTIONS:
Theres sadly more options lacking that existing imo.
I got to admit that im a numbers fan, and cant have enough options, stats etc.
And since i played dozens of these games, ill more or less expect something that can keep up with the at least an average title in most aspects.
You can not even chose the resolution for the game.
An FPS lock? No
Theres is so much basic stuff missing, i wouldnt know where to start.
You get a dozen languages to chose from, which might make the game interesting for a wider audience.
Sadly most of the translations in this genre are usually straight forward garbage.
When i checked the 1st language that wasnt english, i literally found the 1st mistake on the very 1st page i looked at.
This really has to improve not only in this game, but most of the genre.
People should just ask their community BEFORE releasing this sort of stuff.
Folks will be more than happy to read over it and all that in their free time.
Somehow this game seems to use the letter O instead of a C?
Both look the same and like an O to me...
The HP bar is simply too small.
How could you properly display anything but arguably 10 HP on that tiny little HP bar?
When you level up, you get a random assortion of "stuff" to chose from being unable to tell whats what.
At least as a new player.
Missing and or lacking descriptions are yet another major plague in this genre.
I mean they COULD have bothered to label things. "Weapon" wouldve been a nice start.
BC you cant even tell if you are picking a weapon or some other random item.
What is the max level for things? Ok, thats easy to figure by playing. But they could simply tell us.
Why doesnt the game tell me wth im actually going to get when i upgrade something?
Gameplay:
While it mostly feels ok so far, i also have some issues here.
Sometimes theres just too many enemy projectiles.
All of a sudden things go back and forth between bullet heaven/hell.
Not my cup of tea so far, as im not a big fan of bullet hells anymore.
Some elites are just randomly running around basically trying to stay out of your reach, even tho they only have a melee attack.
And then they might just suddenly decide to turn around and you stalk you instead.
We also get the usual hordes of fast paced low HP mobs just crossing the screen.
Its standard in plenty of titles, but these guys are just annoying imo.
Theres times events where you have to stand in a circle, and you get swarmed by stuff that seems invincible.
Got to figure out if theres a way to kill there, but at least none of the weapons i had so far was dealing any dmg to them. Plus they are small, fast etc. and again its just annoying.
Music:
You can set master/music/sounds. Basic but i guess it should do the trick.
At least when you are in the menues it seems as if there was some song playing nonstop.
Not 100% sure, have to double check, but again this seemed annoying so far.
Controls:
The controls seem decent enough so far.
Except most chars are moving way too slow. And some can NOT be upgraded either...
Only way out is wasting a slot for boots instead of having space for an actually good item.
Thats why i dont like this type of meta progression, which we will get to right away.
Meta progression:
Theres clouds flying around this screen, which while its a nice looking little detail, sometimes simply blocks your vision completely. They get in the way of a node, and you cant even tell theres one below the clouds, unless you KNOW, or randomly click onto that area.
You can only permanently upgraade specific stats for each char seperately.
Means have to buy the same upgrades like an extra weapon slot, or extra max. HP for each char again.
And you can not even refund them.
Want to make sure you get a certain weapon bc you need to max it out for an unlock?
Yeah well, you better not have upgraded your max number of weapon slots yet...
Every char only has certain stats you can upgrade,
Not every char has the same stuff available to upgrade.
What i think is the slowest char, doesnt get to upgrade his movespeed as example. Yay...
Theres just not enough to to in general.
Im used to unlocking half a dozen random things in the 1st few runs in this type of game.
Imo this version of the game should have been be the demo or chapter:0
This is not even up to the current genre standards, and the only cool part about it is the theme.
UPDATE:
Im kinda stuck atm. bad sign in a title like this. You shouldnt get stuck in a VSclone period.
It should all be a more or less time consuming and potentially annoying but chill and relaxed process of grinding for more upgrades in order to become stronger, and the next time make it further.
However i would actualy have to tryhard while being in good shape in order to make it past the next stages.
And since theres no decent meta progression that would let me just upgrade lets say regen, attack speed and dmg, i cant simply keep playing and come back stronger next time.
The handful of mostly useless upgrades you can get for the individual chars/weapons just arnt able to replace the lack of a PROPER meta progression.
Afraid it will take me a while before im bored enough to give it another try.
I simply have dozens of better VSclones im not 100% finished with.
And i dare to say they release faster than im able to beat all of them.
Clearly makes this a title i wouldnt buy again.
Ill update as i play.
