Seems OK at a 1st glance.
My 1st issue without even having played a single minute would already be the way the way you are being forced to buy skins that shouldve been part of the game instead.
After a small intro mission you end up in the "central hub" area.
This basically replaces some menues and is far more appealing imo.
Just like your village in crafty survivors, or the camps in death must die/halls of torment.
Aside from talking to other chars and npcs, you can acess your char upgrades and such.
(My 1st gameplay issue was not being able to fully restart a new game? Correct me if im wrong.
I launched the game by accident. Was trying to grab at least the free DLC, not play already.
There was a short "intro", i ended up in the "our char goes to hell" mission, and just quit the game.
Now when i restart the game incl. deleting all saves, i stil spawn after that mission in the "hub"?
Sadly missed whatever was going on before that point.)
UI/options
Theres sadly just the bare minimum of settings available. With a few exceptions.
Aside from the half dozen buttons and sliders for resolution, sound and such, you are left with only 2-3 genre specific settings.
Theres transparency, DMG numbers, and monster injury effect.
(In one of the menues my cursor kept moving SO fast when i hit A/D to change between tabs, i almost missed that there was more than the 1st and last page. This was with an old G19 keaboard, nothing mechanical, but ill try that tomorrow on one of my other PCs. This could seemingly use a fix id say so far.)
MUSIC
The music seems quite nice so far as far as im concerned.
I prefer slower paced tunes these days, and this has been pretty relaxing so far.
Atm in the hub area its just some basic piano tunes that would perfectly fit into your oldschool (j)rpg of choice as a BG tune for something like a village or such.
(After spending some time in the menues/bar screen things started to become annoying.
Theres some obnoxious noise in the back. Sounds like a distant radio or an even more distant megaphone someone is shouting into.)
GFX
Drawn 2D? Definately looks quite nice, even tho im not a major fan of anime chars.
In the hub area you have a pretty close up camera, things definately look quite nice there.
The main chars look quite good for being the usual cliche anime girls.
The ones i played so far even had pretty good animations.
The playable chars appear as you unlock them, and theres also some NPC folks that remind me more of games such as "dredge". Weird and pretty unique looking folks.
Drawn sorta, not really sure what this style might be called if anything. But i like it.
When you start a run, the game zooms out TOO far for my taste.
Theres simply a zoom feature on your mouse wheel missing.
This left me with several issues at times.
Pickups being so small that sometimes i could barely find them.
And as long as they are OFFscreen theres even the usual indicators and all that. Perfectly fine.
Things like lava pools could easily become so small that in combination with a screen full of mobs...
I find myself running thru these way too often for no good reason.
What makes this twice as sad is that there already IS a zoom feature in the game. But no way for us to use it.
In the hub it zooms in, when you enter a map, it slowly zoomes out. All there, just lack of acess to it.
(I play on a BIG TV already. And right now in only 1920*1080 to top it off.
As soon as i quit being lazy and install my replaced psu in another pc ill be going back to 4k. And i can imagine that would make this issue even worse. Totally not looking forward to it from a certain POV)
GAMEPLAY
The visibility/zoom thing i mentioned above is an issue clearly.
Runs dont really felt rewarding/satisfying enough so far.
I sadly often find myself becoming bored, looking at the timer wondering when this is over, and realizing im just 5 min into a run.
And i still have another 15min of time to kill at that pace.
Collecting 10x more "xp gems" then there should be polluting the screen to begin with.
And hence each one is giving only a fraction of what youd expect. rxcept this isnt a pinball machine...
I mean the runs were rewarding at 1st yes.
At the ends of my 1st runs the game threw the usual half dozen random things at me, that you often get in these games. No complains there.
Satisfying not so much. The weapons are either a useful type, or not. the ones can become really op, others are seemingly not worth wasting a slot for.
I had nearly no feeling of progression in some runs, aside from 1 or 2 upgrades that changed how my skills worked. Lame to OP in 1 click. And all the other stuff i had worked for was irrelevant.
Theres also nothing to do in the maps sadly. I wish there was at least a reason to move at all so to speak.
(I see far too many mobs getting stuck 1 way or another. It goes from seperate standard mobs all the way to whole groups and bosses. it can both appear when they are simply not able to find their way around a usualy tiny obstacle, or even out in the open with not an obstacle in sight. And im not mixing this up with Crowd controlling AoE effects such as ice or what not.)
PROGRESSION
Theres some sort of meta progression ill have to figure out 1st.
So far i saw 3 different themed gods seemingly offering weapon/defense and even rule changing upgrades.
You can craft/drink potions that have somewhat of the same effect but only for 1 game aswell i think.
You get to use im not quite sure what it is yet as "airdrops".
Basically lets you send some sort of items to the battlefield during your runs.
Theres a forge which ill assume lets you upgrade weapons or possibly craft new ones. Ill update asap.
You start with 1 char, the rest needs to be unlocked.
Theres a shop sellig some of the materials needed for things like potions.
A "collection" seems to list unlocked things.
Theres the usual achievements aswell as daily quests.
Need to play more and check all that stuff 1st, but it seems theres enough going on.
(Not sure if its my fault, but my 1st run was probably the best by far. I had upgrades i havnt gotten since.
And ever since my main weapon has turned into complete garbage.
Im starting to suspect theres yet another gameplay mechanic im still missing. Something with bad results for my chars. And it wasnt the "god of order" from the meta prog.)
Will update as i play.
