I played this game over 30 hours. The basic idea is great and it is relaxing. I also liked the landscape and that you are relatively free how to achieve your missions. The best thing in this game is, that you really can take your time and almost do what you want. Alas, it has too many design flaws and bugs. First of all it leaves the player alone. It takes a long time until you master the inconsistent user interface and some essential things can only be learned by luck or research on YouTube etc. E.g. the notorious how to boil water problem (see below).
The rabbit hunt mission is taunting for the beginner. It took me days to complete because there are too few of them and then not where you are told. They can be found not on the meadow but on the side of the footpath! Took me 2 game-time days to complete.
Then the hunt for old chip mission is simply too long for the beginner. Took me 5 game-days to complete and had to build 3 camps. Finding that beast is not easy but I got it (after shooting 3 wrong elks) !
The ATV mission is relatively easy.
Then the good old friend mission. Looks like it is plain vanilla but then the mandatory objective "Go to Brighton lake" appears. This is where the game gets nasty. Firstly, you can either guess where that lake is or do internet research because they forgot to label it on the map. When you get there you are expected to shoot a wolf that attacks you. Unfortunately the wolf killed me - and that was the end of the game. You get no second chance. Even if you go back to a former saved game! Maybe it helps if you go back to before the mission but in my case I had no older save games because I had heeded the advice of the game "Save often save early" and also built a base camp at Panorama view in between.
Generally, when you are attacked by predators, I had the impression that the gun jams on close distance.
There are a lot of other unhappy things in that game. It sucks that most of time your are in peril of starvation, die from thirst or fall unconcious because you cannot simply sleep but have to build a camp first. Most of the water you find is contaminated and you have to cook it. So you are almost dying and desperately run for water and then - if don't want to fall ill which is no fun at all - have to build a camp fire and a grill and wait until your water is boiled. Also having to feed the dog is a unnecessary distraction making him more of a burden than an asset.
Well, I feel sorry for the game because, despite all it drawbacks, I loved it. But I will not start all over again.
Here are some hints for you, who want to give it a try
- First of all, take your time. You can take a week to accomplish a task if you like.
- You can only save the game at camps, not even the RV. If you buy a tent, you can save and rest anywhere.
- Always boil water from ponds using the camp fire enhancement grill (Prepare boiled water)
- At the lodge Nancy (after you finished the second task) will sell and buy almost everything. Buy equipment from her
- You can drive only to parking areas that are on the map
- Return to panorama view and build a base camp at the pond. It always has clean water.
- Camps collapse after one day. Upgrade to outpost.
- You can harvest branches and leaves from trees by making a melee attack with your hatchet.
- Spend your experience points to level up your stamina first: need less food and drink!
- Stash boxes transmit their contents to all other stash boxes. However I only saw this in a video.
- Do not carry too much because you are slower and get tired faster.
- Objectives are indicated by a red dot on the map
- Beware of the "evil woman" near the oven at the lodge! You get literally stuck on her!
Goodbye. I am stuck at Brighton Lake forever.
