The Pillar is a first person Puzzle-Game that is heavily inspired by The Witness. The store page tells about being "mysterious" or "mystery" but as there's not a single line of story, it's more like fantasy levels that aren't even thematically connected in any way.
In every of the levels you will find a variety of puzzles, of wich I want to name and describe a few here:
* Most of the puzzles are arukone puzzles. Where you have a grid with multiple pairs of colored boxes and you have to connect boxes of the same color while moving horizontally or vertically through the grid. If all boxes are connected and no tile on the grid is used more than once, the puzzle is solved.
* A noteworthy exception from the arukone puzzles are the ... let's call them "memory tasks" ... where you're shown a sequence of lines on a grid and you have to memorize them and repeat them after all the lines of this particular puzzle where shown. I don't want to call them "puzzles" because they're really not puzzles, they're simon says in a rather hard version and the most frustrating part in this game.
* A few "In wich order do I have to press these buttons" puzzles are also in there. Either I missed hints for these or they all are just try-and-error.
Two more puzzles that are introduced way later in the game:
*
Another grid puzzle where your player figurine can only walk in straight lines and only can take moves that leads across at least one field that was not visited yet. What basically is a nice idea, the instances of these puzzles are pretty easy.
*
Grid puzzles that are a bit like Mystic Squares where you have to connect the same colors by switching 2 neigbouring tiles.
You can get a highscore in every level by not making any mistakes while filling out the puzzles. Unfortunately the "memory tasks" and button sequences are either lacking any hints or are just ridiculously hard to memorize.
Another optional task besides perfecting every level is that you can collect artwork that is scattered through each level.
The Pillar could be a really good game and you cann see this especially in the first part of the last level, where you actually have a good variety of puzzles (grid based ones and even a few really nice environmental ones), but it misses this opportunity by giving you several levels of medioce grid puzzles and memory tasks.
The soundtrack and sound is okay and neither noteworthy good or bad.
The artstyle, although very simplistic (The Witness-like) is actually well done. I especially liked a scene in one of the first levels where you puzzles beneath very colorful trees and the lightning was just right and very vibrant.
Except in once scene I encountered no noteworthy bugs (even the one I encountered wasn't stopping me from winning the level).
I bought this game for 10€ and I think that's still a fair price for the quality you get. I finished it in around 3 hours of gameplay, but I also missed some pieces of artwork and I'm not an achievement hunter. So I guess (if you're not a grandmaster of memorizing stuff) you could easily get 5-6 hours of gameplay out of this.
