This is a good way to review and brush up on your Japanese skills. If you are just starting out, you have not learn anything about Japanese, it would be good to learn about Hiragana and Katakana. The game will mention some small facts about the Japanese alphabet that you would not know right off the bat. I made a goal to find a treasure and then save the game. It's a long road in between save points. That is just me. I knew some words and learned Hiragana and Katakana prior to playing the game. I eventually came across some words that I did not yet know. As you read the text messages, you sense a bit of repetition. Repetition is good for learning. Even if you do not remember a word, you sense you heard it before. I will recommend this game for the vocabulary it challenged me with. Repetition is the clue. Remember the clue. Scenic Treasures is not a action game per say. More like flash cards with scenic backgrounds. It's interesting to look at. Bottom line, learn a little about the Japanese language before you play. The game presumes you had some lessons prior to playing. Ganbatte kudasai...

Unfortunately I can not recommend this game.
For language learning, this is a bad approach since the implementation of this game is just your bog-standard visual novel engine which doesn't offer more interaction than clicking to get the next line of dialog and choosing an option from a list of choices. There is no feedback loop - as in, no way to review your progress, re-do lessons later on, quiz yourself on whether you actually learned anything. The model is fine for VNs, but not for language learning.
Also, there does not seem to be an option to turn down the background music. While the music isn't bad as such, it does get annoying really quickly.
It looks cute and all, and I wish it was better, but unfortunately this is not good.
