I've had this route for a while now, and have been thoroughly enjoying it. It allows for plenty of high speed running, and a challenging mountain pass, and to top it all off, it's set in the steam era! What more could you want? The big boy, and challenger, have been upgraded in this route from both a visual and audio standpoint. There are some minor issues such as the whistles not having any doppler effect, and the camera being positioned incorrectly in the cab view for the big boy. At first there was a problem with the rolling stock, as the sounds for them were initially bugged, however it seems to have been patched, as I haven't encountered it in quite a while. I've seen some complaints that the locomotives are under powered and buggy, but I have not seen any of these bugs in the time I've spent playing it (or at least any game breaking bugs). If you like 1950s era railroading, challenging grades, and high speed running, this route is definitely for you!

As a huge fan of transition era American railroading, I really enjoy this particular route. The rolling stock looks especially good and I recognize some of it from the AC-12 DLC (especially the PFE reefers and SP caboose) but there are others that I have not seen before. The locomotives are pretty lackluster, but the Big Boy and Challenger are marginally improved from their original renditions. There is a glitch that I encountered where they will sometimes accelerate at an alarming rate for no apparent reason when attempting to stop, but I also noticed that the speed limits are not enforced for the most part on this route. I only noticed punishments for speeding being given when going too fast while changing tracks. Obviously, this route is not worth the full price of $40, but hopefully you don't need me to tell you that. There are only 8 scenarios included and I noticed several careless typos in the instructions for each one. I have played through three of them and they were all "drive from point A to point B" sort of stuff. I wouldn't say that the scenarios are bad or even boring but there are other routes that are of similar price or cheaper that have more and/or better scenarios. If you can get this route on sale for under $20, it is a definite recommend as it is the only American route that includes Steam and Diesel.

I found the scenery to be rather well done.
The first scenario I did was the Diesel Ascent with the F7, I did find there was the occasional stutter, but the worst thing was on topping the grade the lighting was awful, maybe it was due to the time of day 17:55. Not sure what that issue was.
My settings were on highest, but without any of the new stuff.
My next scenario was with the Challenger in part 1.
Issue 1. was the further I travelled along the route the worse was the stuttering. Maybe I need to reduce my settings.
Issue 2. Was strange for a route that needed no other content and that was the main river had "Missing Texture" in the base of the river {under the water}.
All other small streams were fine.
I will need to do some more trials with different settings, I will also try it on my other PC, setup.
So far I will not make any recommendations as it may be another issue with TS2020.

One of my favorite routes. The route is well done and even better models the 1940s. At least 30 types of rolling stock are included, including low poly for yards.

This route has some potential and I am very happy to have it. Routes that cater to major US steam eras are not the most common. The locomotives themselves are updated versions of the old models that have been available. This includes, cab lighting on the steam locomotives, different whistle sounds, illuminating number boards, and markings, etc. The rolling stock detail is good, not great, but not bad either. So far I have enjoyed the route itself very much. Mix this with Smokebox's upcoming Big Boy and current FEF-3 and it will be much better.

as much as it is a good route
the Challenger and Big Boy are Major let downs
1. both steam locos are too weak and and can barley haul a 40 car train
2. at Ogden there is a connection for DRG&W lines yet no stock with DRG&W stock, what logic is that!?

Well. I've spent too much time in this game as is. But I couldn't help picking this up as there's a ton of Union Pacific DLC but really only Sherman Hill to run it on. The route itself feels pretty good, of fair length, and includes some new period accurate rolling stock like livestock cars, though my water textures didn't download properly but that's kinda of a known issue with train sim as a whole. I'm sure what most want to hear about is the locomotives and that's what I want to talk about.
Yes there's been updates to the Challenger and Big Boy, mostly to Big Boy. For the most part Challenger feels unchanged, unfortunately
*Much nicer steam effects, Big Boy especially no longer smokes heavily from just rolling along with the regulator shut
*New sounds, including whistle
*Cab side windows open and are reflected outside as well
*Cab detailing feels different
*Big Boy's gauges actually work now instead of being blank green displays
*Big Boy has new textures, much cleaner textures than the original
*Challenger has white flags on the pilot
*Modeling does not appear to have changed
*Independantly controlled cab lights
Unfortunately there's plenty of bad stuff
*The tender graphics do not appear to be setup correctly and parts will disappear, for example half of the last c in Pacific
*Cab view is set from rear seats in Big Boy
*The regulator disappears from view if you nose down slightly in the view in Big Boy
*No in-cab whistle control for Big Boy
*Forward cab windows do not reflect outside view, all windows shut inside but outside windows are propped open
*No fade out effect on the whistle, it is the same volume at the rear of a 40 car train as at the cab
*No exhaust smoke while reversing
*Smoke immediately turns black upon adding coal, and immediately goes back to pure white upon stopping
*Challenger is very slippy, to where it very difficult to impossible to get started again if you stop on the hill, which doesn't seem right to me and feels like a carry over from the original. Big Boy on the other hand doesn't slip very often if at all.
Then there's a huge issue I found while driving Big Boy. If you use the brakes a little to slow down a little at speed on level track, upon release the train will alarmingly speed back up, past what you were doing before. At one point I doubled my speed from 30 mph to 60 mph with just two quick brake applications. I have not yet observed this in Challenger, but I haven't played it a whole lot aside from quick comparisons.
While the large locos are a disappointment, I look forward to running the FEF-3 over this route and of course Smokebox's Big Boy when it is complete.

The route itself is excellent, especially when used with the 'Big Blow' Turbine or with Smokebox's outstanding FEF-3. I look forward to running Smokebox's upcoming Big Boy through Weber and Echo canyons. So, if you're interested in the route alone, I would recommend it. Especially if you have an interest in the Union Pacific Railroad during the transition period.
However...
I cannot complete the PFE scenario, as the reefers have a problem with the train brake. the brake applies as expected and there is no problem with the self lap position, however when the train brake is moved to the release setting the train suddenly gains speed (Almost double!), even on an uphill gradient! The throttle was fully closed, so this is not a wheelslip issue. I note that other reviewers have stated that they have had the same issue with the PFE cars and, in my opinion, this issue spoils the DLC as a package. It is incredibly frustrating to see DLC released with scenarios that are impossible to complete with a perfect score due to what appears to be a lack of testing. If this issue is fixed I will happily change my review to reflect this and change my recommendation.

Love the idea of the route, but there are problems with the engines. For one, the tender on the big boy was missing text and the challenger had a wobbly wheel. another is the rolling stock which seems to make an endless clanking sound. I too shall wait for Smokebox and his version of the Big Boy.

Route itself is ok, not great, but tolerable. The locomotives ruin it.
Might consider buying again when Smokebox releases his big boy.
