Judging by the description and the screenshots, Aspect seemed like a game with a lot of promise. Sadly, as neat as the game’s premise might be, any sense of enjoyability is hampered by its poor design.
Gameplay
The most significant issue with Aspect is its horrible collision detection, where instead of the actual boundaries of the player being considered, the player is treated as a rectangle. As a result, collision detection is hit and miss and you’ll never surely know if you are going to make the jump or pick items up. This causes the game to be very punishing, but for all the wrong reasons. Also, having to repress Enter every time to restart the game doesn’t help the flow either.
Additionally, the keyboard input is delayed and unresponsive. Every so often, keys might not even register, which is completely unacceptable for a game that relies on fast reaction times.
Visuals and Sound
Visually, the cyberpunk aesthetics of the game performs no substantial role, and you’ll be looking at the same repeating platforms and backgrounds over and over again. The bloom resulting from the neon lights sometimes obscures the vision and hides small obstacles along the way. I also experienced a severe case of screen tearing, but with the lack of an options menu, there was no way of fixing it. Overall, the combination of bloom, screen tearing and hard-locked 30 fps refresh rate gave me a headache on longer play sessions. The music is most likely the game’s most enjoyable aspect as it starts ramping up the further you progress through a level, but the music alone can't redeem Aspect.
Verdict
Overall, some of the game’s minor faults could have been overlooked if it wasn’t for the terrible collision detection. The clunky and unresponsive controls don’t help the gameplay either. Also, the visuals become repetitive very fast and as such, Aspect is not even a case of style over substance that the Cyberpunk genre is known for. Overall, at its current state I can’t recommend the game.
