The controls are esoteric and the simplistic graphics do not help. It took way too long to figure out even basic movement controls, even after I figured out how to activate the tutorial. What little parts of the game I could understand were boring and lacked any mechanics or complexity that would justify the control scheme. All in all, not a good time. If the idea of rising from adventurer to monarch is cool to you, just play Mount and Blade Warband. This game has an interesting idea that was executed about as well as Rasputin was.

Form a party. Fight giant rats. Build a campfire. Tan some hides. Make plans to take over the world... You know, typical hero stuff~

Decent but way too buggy and incomplete. Dev is absolutely silent/gone. Do not buy this game. Spend elsewhere.. This needs an earlier version title because anything resembling completion in this game is a lie. That being said if more work is done on this game it might be playable. If you don't believe me, buy the game and see how many saves you lose from bugs. Call me out on that. Aside from the bugs, including powerful and eventual game breaking ones, we also get a system so esoteric you won't know if that's how the game's meant to be played, or a bug. That keeps you playing until you realise it's not playable but also you're beyond the refund period. If the bugs, and I mean bugs, are ironed out this is a decent game. The interface IS confusing but I got the hang of it. Otherwise stay back. Ask other players, see what they think too. For such a newly released game the radio silence is deafening. This game has potential and if you're willing to risk paying for that, have at it. EDIT: It's a complete thorough rip off. This cant' be legal. The game was abandoned almost as soon as it was out the door.

I really want to like this game, but I can't really play it. On my high end PC, the game runs so slow it is ridiculous. When I create a new map it takes so long to generate the map and then the grassland terrain is just black. So each map looks terrible with all kinds of black/blank spots. I can't run the game in my native resolution because it will have missing menu options/missing graphics. If I have more than 10 or so heroes in the game, each turn takes forever to process. The default of like 40 heroes, takes 30 minutes or more for one turn to process. When playing, even moving my character is sluggish, doing actions are sluggish. Basically, it is impossible to play as is. I don't know how many other people are having this issue, but this is a game breaking issue for me. I have mentioned it a few times in the discussion threads, but have received no response from the developer and even after several patches, nothing has changed for me, So, I can't recommend this game unfortunately.

This seems like a game I should really like. I love the randomly created NPC's and the fact that you can have meaningful relationships with them. And if you get along with them well enough, they'll show you their tits. And I love the stuff I've read about being able to build towns and have all these different ways of living as a character in this world. But an hour in, I have no idea what the hell I'm supposed to be doing. None whatsoever. There are no Let's Plays, no tutorials. The controls are absolutely awful. Instead of moving with WASD, you click a spot right next to your group to move to that spot. Note, not a spot on the screen, but one right next to your group. You can only move one square at a time, so when moving around you're doing 'click', 'click', 'click' 600 times. You have to make an educated guess as to what most of the numbers mean that you see. A 3/3 is next to my name. Is that hit points? I guess. I've never gotten hit so that never got put to the test, luckily. I'm level 18 somehow, although I've only had a few very weak encounters and got no announcement of gaining levels, and I don't seem to be any better at level 18 than I was at the beginning of the game - I mean I only have 3 hit points after all (I think). Perhaps the level I see is a bug, but the game is so poorly explained that I can't tell what it's supposed to be showing me, and if what I'm seeing is correct. I mean, I've played ASC games before that have detailed control schemes and are hard to learn. But these controls and all the indecipherable stuff makes Dwarf Fortress look like Diablo. I'd bet I could learn to fly a small plane quicker than I can learn this. It's important also to note that this game is NOT EA and the dev hasn't been seen in 3 months. I could, possibly, be able to figure this out with 8 more hours of play. And maybe the bugs I've read about aren't serious. But I've got so little grasp of the game in the hour I've played, just no clue, that I'm not going to bet $15 on that happening. If I'm wrong about the dev and Fantasy Monarch does get worked on/fixed, then I'd try it again. But there's no way I can recommend this as is.

Very interesting game, very oldschool and full of content. I only wish there was multiplayer, as the RP potential of this game is immense. Keep up the good work devs, this is shaping up to be a new Dwarf Fortress!

Having fun with this, love the variety of characters and builds and it seems like it has alot of potential for an easier yet lite Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode style of game or a lite Cataclysm Dark Days ahead style of game. One complaint I have is that I don't always know what is possible to do or how to do some of the things I think are possible but I feel like I am living the game so maybe the game-play loop will become more obvious as it naturally unfolds. Feels like this could be epic but I am not sure the developer is active so I recommend it as fun as it is but am cautiously optimistic if the developer does more with it.

First impressions from a long time player of RPGs. Pros: It feels like a non-convoluted Dwarf Fortress. The keys are intuitive so far. Character Customization is actually pretty interesting with a few choices for customization. Good variety of classes. Good options when talking to people. You can seduce, talk, ask for help, see how they are, ask them about their life. Tons of options. Two pages in game are dedicated to it and I'm sure there will be more once I get into it. First time I've seen three PoV's in this style of game. That's actually really cool, you can swap between them. You can give personalities to the characters and customize them, which gives them this feeling of being a companion. When you end a day, there's a report that appears and it shows your companions by a campfire as they talk to each other about how the day is and how they feel about each other and events that occurred throughout the day. Combat is familiar in some sense. They allow you to 1: Auto-fight 2: Fight with control of your MC. 3: Fight with control of your MC and companions. The UI is fairly easy to understand in most scenarios and it tends to lean on the comprehensive side with common sense prevailing. Characters have comradery with each other. Guilds are interesting as there are plenty of them and they all have their own quirks. You can build and own land. From what I've done, I'm actually becoming a merchant of sorts with a shady background. It's pretty viable to talk your way out of situations. While the art style is retro, I love that some work went into animating the pixels to some extent. It startled me out when my MC blinked at me, but I think it's pretty cool. Coming from CD:DA and Dwarf fortress, I wasn't really ready for that. Anyone in the world is a potential enemy, friend, lover and many other things. Walking up to an skeleton and having their bones blush when your high charisma charmed them is entertaining. Nice: I was excited for the Pickit creator, but it seems pretty hard to use from a "plebs" PoV. Just through file searching and trying to create something, it can take a minute to understand. Variables aren't entirely explained and there are only a few notepad documents that try to guide you through the process of using it. Questions like, "How do I make a Race?" are pretty hard for me to understand, even now. Edit as of 9/5/2020: After the dev's original support of the game, silence plagues the game now.
