It is honestly beyond me how someone could price this game above 1-2 euros (let alone offer a monthly license for internet cafes!). The game is buggy and unpolished, and it can be finished in less than 15 minutes. Worst of all, the trailer on Steam is grossly misleading! There’s no punching, grabbing opponents, or connecting different moves into combos—you just dash and shoot. That’s it. I definitely don’t recommend it at its original price.

5/10 "Nice try." ✌ Johnny Rocket is a very short, overpriced and glitchy black & white comic look jump'n'run. Pros: + great/brave art style + very good visuals + good sound effects + okay gameplay + okay controls + okay music Cons: - some glitches - no button remapping - very short (~30min) - overpriced (max worth $1) Verdict: Needs a 90% off sale.

Johnny Rocket is a funny, frustrating, short and simplistic experience. I was drawn to this game due to its great minimalist animation and humor, but the game's brief playtime and somewhat aggravating mechanics hold it back from being an experience I would recommend to others. While I still enjoyed moments of this game and found myself laughing at some of its enemy designs (especially the Nazi Seal enemy..) the difficulty level and overall gameplay left me wanting much more out of the title. Johnny Rocket took me about an hour and 15 minutes to complete the entire game, with many restarts due to death. If you are somehow able to get the game mechanics down and progress more rapidly, you could probably beat this game in a half an hour. The game's length is padded out due to several annoying mechanics in the game's design. First, the enemies fire rate: you may know exactly where an enemy is going to be coming from off-screen, but that won't matter in the slightest as whenever your player character is parallel to an enemy you will most likely be getting shot by them and losing health by one of their lightning-fast bullets. Let's say there's an enemy above you and to the right that you need to jump and shoot in order to progress: as soon as you press the 'jump' button to be parallel to the enemy, they will (usually) immediately fire their gun simultaneously as soon as you press jump and a bullet will whizz across the screen to collide with your character. Also, enemies off-screen that you may not even know are there will often shoot you before you even see them. You can get by this by memorizing where they are coming from and 'pre-firing' in order to try to vaporize them before they hit you, but the speed with which their projectiles fly just make it feel more left to chance than anything. The timing of this seems VERY immediate unlike other retro or bullet hell titles (i.e. Contra, etc...) Whereas you may be able to plan ahead and memorize the patterns on other titles, something about Johnny Rocket's timing (the speed of the enemy's bullets flying in) just seems cranked to 11. Aside from that main complaint, the game itself is pretty funny and includes a few bosses to vanquish and a good variety of enemy designs each with their own unique death animation (such as flamethrower enemies backpacks exploding, kamikaze penguins, and UFOs.) The game's music fits the artstyle and edginess of some of the zany violence well, but the guitar riffs can be a bit brief so you will hear the same loop repeated quite a bit (especially as a result of dying from the aforementioned zippy enemy bullets) In the options of the game are about 20 color palette swaps or CRT effects to choose from which is a nice addition. Some of these are more appealing than others, whereas some include somewhat jarring / disorienting visual effects that warp the screen or cause a pulsing effect to the graphics that makes it hard to concentrate. All-in-all this is a welcome addition. Johnny Rocket is a game I admire immensely for some things (being made by a smaller team, its animation style, and overall unique presentation..) while unfortunately not really enjoying the experience due to the frustrating timing of the projectiles and its overall padded length (the plane level was fun, but with only one very brief section of the game containing that sequence and the title itself being only about an hour-long overall it is difficult to recommend.) Unfortunately, the humor and cool animation style aren't compelling enough reasons to warrant bothering to purchase the full game when you can get nearly the same enjoyment from just viewing the trailer while avoiding its brief playtime and the annoying timing of the projectiles. **EDIT** Also, the gameplay mechanics and abilities available to the player are nowhere near as smooth or seamless as what is shown in the first trailer footage here on Steam. If you are really curious about the game look up actual gameplay, as that fluidly animated combat sequence is more of a cutscene than anything. The actual gameplay consists of a double-jump, a dash, and a shoot. No uppercuts, no throwing pieces of broken building, no real flying with the jetpack.

I beat this game in about 15 minutes, the fact that a game this short sells for $10 is a little insane. The core gameplay is fun, it is a hand drawn run n gun, with one stage that plays like a side scrolling schmup in a plane. There are 3 levels here, they are all fun to play and end in a boss fight but I cannot imagine someone paying this price for a game that can be beaten in 15-20 minutes. If it goes on sale for a dollar or two then by all means pick it up, it is fun to play, but the price does not justidfy the content.
