Assassin's Creed III Remastered Review

"Once upon a time, we had a ceremony on such occasions. But I don't think either of us are really the type for that. You've got your tools and training. Your targets and goals. And now you have your title. Welcome to the Brotherhood, Connor."

Overall Rating: 4.5/10 Gameplay: 5/10 Graphics: 9.8/10 Art Direction and Stylization: 9/10 Story: 8/10 Music and Sound: 3/10 Personal enjoyment: 3.5/10
For everything good I like about this game, there's double the amount of things to hate, because this game has some of the most infuriating shit I have seen in a video game in a long time. From the moment I launched Assassin's Creed III I knew I was going to have very mixed opinions. First, the game crashed immediately after the intro cutscene, then a second time on the Animus loading screen, and after that no matter what I did the game straight up wouldn't work, I had to get my brother to help, but even after he managed to get things working the game was riddled with issues. Stutter and lag, button prompts not working, an overall sense of slugishness to the game, the list goes on. This is a level of technical issues I have not seen in a game since Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, and that game was released in 2003! As for the game itself, Assassin's Creed III is like the vegetables on your plate. You may not like them, despise them even, but they're necessary to make a meal well-rounded and good for you, and that's precisely what ACIII is I'm afraid. It's a necessity to finish the Desmond Saga, but it itself won't be a good experience. I enjoyed the story for the most part, it was intriguing and I was hooked by the setting (If there's something Assassin's Creed does really well across all games is spark your interest in history and to learn more about it, in this case, the American Revolution). Connor himself is a fantastic protagonist, and side characters like Haytham, Achilles, Charles Lee, were also pretty good. The story and plot as a whole was overall well-written. However the story has it's downs as well, while it's gripping with Connor’s emotional arc, it does stumble with poor pacing at times and the absolutely shitty rushed Modern day conclusion. More about that later. The gameplay is a massive letdown: clunky parkour, shallow combat with brain-dead or infuriating AI, and an underused open world that feels lifeless despite its pretty visuals (And for a remaster it looks... not all that better). Certain features are also kinda underwhelming if you ask me, while the game tries to innovate more than it's predeccesors, things like the hunting mechanics are barely utilized. I think I used them maybe twice, before realizing it's easier to just run up to an animal and kill it. Naval combat is the only highlight, I wasn't a huge fan of it but it was unique, however it’s too sparse to save this slog. As for the modern day conclusion to the final entry in this saga? Underwhelming. Underwhelming dogshit. No boss fight, no epic finale, no real end cutscene, the story just kind of... concludes.
Desmond sacrifices himself to save the world, and the world is saved, at least temporarily,
and yeah that's it. Five whole games of build up, five whole games of trying to save the earth from world-ending doom, only for it just end with no fanfare whatsoever. It's especially disappointing when you consider that this game was meant to be the end to the main story of Assassin's Creed, and kind of is. I was very excited to play this game knowing it was the finale to Desmond's story, after four whole games I loved with all my heart I was hyped for the final entry in this saga, and while the game started out rough there were still good moments so I held out hope, but I'm afraid this ending was just disappointing and a far cry from the epic conclusion I was hoping for. Safe to say, this journey did not finish with a bang. So, should you play Assassin's Creed III Remastered? Necessary for the saga, maybe, but it’s a chore to play. Only play it if you want to play the main story like me, even if you're a casual gamer or a mild fan, don't bother. Skip it unless you’re a diehard fan.

Got this as part of the AC Odyssey bundle. Overall, AC3 opened up the world more allowing the player to participate in hunting activities. I personally had a lot of fun with the DLCs where Connor gets all these "magical" abilities. But I also enjoyed exploring the early day settings of New York and Boston. This game also introduced naval combat which be expanded on in AC Black Flag and AC Rogue. The story was fairly decent but some of the side content could get fairly repetitive especially grinding for some of the challenges to unlock stuff. Also, I do not think the menu UI is fully optimized for PC, I had some issues with navigating the Assassin's Guild menu and some others. Speaking of optimization, the AC Liberation game that came with this is poorly optimized especially considering it is a Playstation Vita port. The story was also not as good as AC3 in my opinion. It was difficult to finish since it constantly kept crashing whenever I was playing AC Liberation (please lookup potential solutions on the internet which can help reduce some issues).

Haven't you always dreamed of randomly stopping in the middle of a chase? Or perhaps the desire to suddenly pop out of your hiding spot for no reason when hiding overwhelms you? Well this is the game for you! Imagine running, chasing the bad guy, and in your hot pursuit you decide to jump on the side of a building and slowly wiggle there. He'll never see it coming! Or, imagine eavesdropping missions in 3D space, but if you go too high or too low you fail, or too quickly or slowly, or if you're seen, and you get 90% of the way through it then BAM stuck on a side ledge! Imagine a game so fun that even on the intro mission, you get extra credit for firing a musket BUT here's the really sweet part, the button for firing doesn't work in that part of the game! Be prepared to have to restart a lot due to critical loading errors that you don't find out about until you're halfway through a mission and the door you need to approach isn't there. But all in all, it's a fun game. Very linear, very glitchy, the story is super cliche, Desmond is a angsty teenage balding thirty-something year old and every line he has is gay. But, Hayman is awesome so it makes up for it. I really wish they would've truly remastered this. So much potential in this game. But hey, at least you can pause cutscenes! That's a nice touch. If it's on sale for $10-15 then I think you'll have a good time with this old game, unless you're a completionist type gamer, then you might rage out pretty hard.

This game is an ambitious entry in the series, but it suffers largely from its uneven pacing. Between the amazing gameplay and music, its depth and themes of failure and justice make the game stand out in the series as one of my favorites.

The early part of the game playing as Haytham Kenway was great, and really captured my attention. The feel of ship-to-ship battles at sea felt great. And I love the idea of an Assassin's Creed game taking place around the time of the American Revolution. And the story was interesting especially in the early portion of the game. But the part of the game that immediately followed was really bad. The parkour with Connor didn't feel as good as previous Assassin's Creed games. Like for one example he will sometimes jump into a haystack or something while being pursued and immediately jumps out despite the fact I never had this problem with any previous Assassin's Creed games, and I've played AC2, AC: Brotherhood, and AC: Revelations. The game takes a frustratingly long time to play because much of it is in the wilderness sending you on BORING fetch quests that just have you running all over the place wasting time in the "open world." Even with fast travel in the game, you still spend a lot of time just running from point A to B doing basically nothing. More than anything else this game seems like a walking simulator. The open world environments can be too time consuming to ride across even by horse because many of the environments have cliffs, mountains, ridges, boulders, bushes, and any number of other things that your horse gets "stuck" on or can't travel over/past. It's just a little too tedious. Being largely in a wilderness frontier setting, the game has you climbing trees now instead of Roman towers, and the tree climbing aspect of the game is badly designed. When you get to the top of the tree, the foliage of the tree often makes it hard if not impossible for you to see the haystack or landing area for when your character takes the "leap of faith" and jumps down, so your character will often die from this activity. I honestly don't even want to finish playing this game but I feel like I have to or else I feel like I'll be missing part of the story, so I feel like I have to finish before moving on to the next Assassin's Creed game. One good aspect of the game are naval ship battles which were really quite fun. I would love to see this aspect of the game expanded upon to allow for ship upgrades that create various different ways to play. There's a part of the game near the end where
you plug some power sources into place in some old ruins
and that was also unpleasant. This part of the game was also made worse by hearing Shaun's unwanted political rants about how he doesn't like Americans who look up to the Founding Fathers for guidance in political affairs. The story was okay, but the game didn't have enough story content. The game should have been condensed so you don't have to spend so much time walking around just to get the small amount of story content it has. AND PLEASE STOP ASKING ME TO LINK MY STEAM ACCOUNT TO MY UBISOFT ACCOUNT. UBISOFT DOES THIS EVERY TIME I LAUNCH THE GAME EVEN THOUGH I SAID I DON'T WANT TO.

For the most part the game works. But Ubisoft sucks at optomization. So I can choose between frame rate or graphics. Stuttering or low level textures. But that is not why I downvote. No I downvote because of the 3rd party software (Ubisoft connect) that is REQUIRED to play the game. It boots everytime the game does, and is glitchy as hell. It has twice now forced the game to minimize because it started up or something or had something to tell me. EDIT: Ubisoft connect is a big problem. It is what appears to be slowing the game's frame rate down. When i open the task bar the frame drops coincide with whatever the hell Ubisoft Connect is trying to do. The timing lines up too perfectly. Fix your games ubisoft and stop pushing this crap on us. Beyond all that, this is a fun game with a good story. EDIT: So far my experience with Liberation (which is part of this purchase) can be summed up with one word: "Broken." The "A button" prompts require me to push the X button on the controller. B button prompts require the Y button, etc etc. The whole controller scheme is screwed up and the ingame menu only allows me to change keyboard controls, not controller controls. This issue is exclusive to liberation. Liberation is also fairly glitchy. Even after starting a new game, the prompt to name the save file would still occasionally show up during the first few loading screens. Very poor work Ubisoft. Oh, and Liberation won't connect to Ubisoft servers, at least on my end. Which means no getting achievements for liberation.

"Assassin's Creed III" offers a sprawling and historically rich open world set during the American Revolution. Players can explore vast wilderness frontiers and bustling colonial cities, bringing a significant change of scenery to the series. The game introduces a compelling new protagonist, Connor, with a unique backstory and motivations. His Native American heritage and struggle for freedom add a fresh and thought-provoking perspective to the Assassin-Templar conflict. "Assassin's Creed III" features significant advancements in gameplay, including dynamic weather, seasonal changes, and improved combat and navigation within the wilderness. The tree-running and hunting mechanics offer new and engaging ways to interact with the environment. The game expands upon the core Assassin's Creed formula with new mission types, side activities, and a deeper focus on naval combat, offering a more varied and comprehensive gameplay experience.

A nostalgic return spoiled by poor polish and weak direction. ★★★☆☆½ (3.5/5) Stable 60 FPS and smoother AI make this a decent upgrade, but it's far from perfect. Visually, the remaster is cleaner and brighter, but it loses some of the original's darker atmosphere. Combat, parkour, and stealth are still top-tier — easily the best parts of the game. The story holds up well, and the voice acting and music are solid, though not outstanding. The real issue is technical: constant loading screens and a long list of bugs really hurt the experience. For a remaster, the polish just isn’t there. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🟥 SPOILER AHEAD – Major Story Moment Below 🟥 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ One of my biggest letdowns was the cutscene direction. Many major moments lacked buildup, weight, and emotion — they just happened, without impact. The clearest example: Achilles’ death. It wasn’t rushed in pacing, but emotionally, it felt completely empty. There was no tension, no real buildup — nothing to make me care. For such an important character, it deserved much more weight and depth. A huge missed opportunity. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ I came in with nostalgia and left with mixed feelings. Not unplayable, but it didn’t live up to the version I remembered, at the end its a game worth playing but with a lot of problems.
