The term "Greatest game ever made" get's thrown around a lot but this game truly is the greatest ever made. Excellent game play that holds up to this day. Story is amazing including main/side quests. Takes itself serious in all the right places while still having the level of absurdity that makes it such an iconic game. A complete and total 10/10 game. You are doing yourself the biggest disservice of your life if you haven't experienced this game at least once.

If you are like me and never played Oblivion but want to in 2025+
Follow this guide for a one click mod pack installer that is stable and will make the game visually good enough for 2025+

Still good even without mods, the NPC's are a bit rough around the edges but being a thief is a lot more fun and surprisingly the horses actually work. I still didn't play enough to actually reach Oblivion itself... but can't wait to see what the hype is all about!

Bought the game on sale. Still have the original cds. Game runs natively max fps on my 144hz monitor. So much smoother than skyrim lol. Looks great on a 1440p monitor. The interface aged exceptionally well with its cozy rpg theme. In the mood to play this game again because I never beat this game. I do remember getting lost in a "painting", being in gladiator battle, and those portals too hell keep appearing.

It's important to remember this game is over 20 years old. Also, the fact that this game usually costs less than $5. So any negative reviewers should keep that in mind.
Oblivion is a masterpiece and it's biggest strength are the quests. The quests with the Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, and of course the Dark Brotherhood stand tall with the greatest quest lines of any game on the market. The main quest line is excellent as well. In addition, the Shivering Isles quest line is one of the greatest expansion ever.
Voice acting is spectacular. Yes, you will notice the same voices for different characters, but it's not a big deal.
Yes, the graphics are dated, and those character faces are ridiculous. However, just get past it.
The leveling system is sluggish yes, but just learn to go without sleeping or the enemies will become too strong.
Oblivion is in my top 5 games of all time regardless of genre or category. This is a mandatory purchase for all Gamers with taste.

My first introduction to the Elder Scrolls universe was through Skyrim. People told me not to play Oblivion because I wouldn't like it. Definitely not as visually impressive as Skyrim, but the story is entertaining and some of the dialogue is classic. The character creation is even better. Tired of making conventionally attractive characters? Now you can fulfill your dreams and make unholy abominations that should not function on a biological level. Enjoy and embrace the chaos.

If Skyrim was your first Elder Scrolls game, give this game a chance. There is a certain charm to the goofy aspects (namely character models) and underneath it all is a deep and immersive world to explore.
The first time I played this game was on the Xbox 360. I remember beating the Shivering Isles DLC and thinking it was just such an awesome experience. I haven't even reached the DLC on PC yet, but that was the most memorable part for me for sure. If you play the game for nothing else, play Shivering Isles.
Light modding is recommended for stability and QoL purposes. Mainly just mods to improve game stability, reduce bugs, and make the user interface more PC friendly. You can also install mods that adjust enemy leveling (vanilla game makes all enemies scale to your current lvl), which I did decide to do since it makes your sense of progression feel more real.
A plus is that if you have the game on a fast computer and use an SSD, the load times are almost non existent and it's an over all real smooth gaming experience.

One of my all time favorite games. For the Steam Deck, just select the "airloaf's Oblivion Bindings" for your layout from Community Layouts and you are good to go. Runs great on the Steam Deck.

its a nightmare to make this game stable. but its SUPER modable so you can alter it in any way you want like a sandbox. i recommend your learn the modding tools they are easy and you can make a lot of fun stuff for roleplay etc. and despite the goofiness it can be an engaging story, deep lore and great questlines.
if you're unconfortable with the modding and fixing and all that nonsese, and you own skyrim special edition i suggest you buy it just so you can get skyblivion this year (LATE 2025).
its a remake of oblivion made by modders in the skyrim se engine (with unique updated assets/worldmap/EVERYTHING) and the full game will be required to isntall it
