While the artwork and the animation are charming, the actual mechanics of Touhou Luna Nights work against each other in ways that make the game frustrating to play. To progress in the game, you rely on time-based abilities, slowing time down or stopping it entirely. One of these uses your MP, and the other uses its own meter. You have a decent amount of both, but this mechanic becomes infuriating with the introduction of the "red mist" and enemies who drain your "time" meter. If you get hit by one of their attacks (very difficult to avoid when entering a new part of the map, since they're AOE), you become unable to use the "time stop" ability. The longer you stay in the red mist, the longer the penalty will be. You need the ability in order to progress, but you can get stuck in this state for up to 30 seconds! And after the effect wears off, you'll be back to 0 on the meter, which means another half-a-minute of waiting. These kinds of punishments become very frequent, very fast, making it feel like time really has come to a crawl, and not just in the game. Add to this the overall unpolished feel of the menus, a map with no real sense of direction, and tons of backtracking as Luna Nights' other shortcomings.

Short, sweet action platformer with really fun uses of the central time stopping gimmick. Note that the game pretty softly a metroidvania: progression is pretty linear and to my knowledge there isn't a ton of possible sequence breaking. Game's still great fun, though.

If you like Touhou and Metroidvania you'll like Luna Nights. It is a short Metroidvania that isn't very difficult, with enjoyable mechanics and combat along with great music from Touhou that was a treat to hear. Even for 100% completion the requirements aren't absurd like some games and you should have them all by the end either way. Overall I highly recommend you try this game if you have a chance.

Fantastic game overall. As someone who doesn't really care for platformer games at all, Luna Nights kept me interested and entertained. I think what instantly serves as a hook for the game is the time stop mechanic and how uniquely woven together it is. Whether its throwing 15 consecutive chainsaws at a bosses back or trying to figure out how to stop yourself from dying with only an inch of your life remaining, there is always something you can do with your time stop. Another thing that I loved was the sound design, you hear the same sounds over and over but something about *time gauge full* or *graze* just sounds so clean. Although the games story is quite weak and admittedly I don't entirely feel I will replay it (at least not anytime soon) I still wholeheartedly recommend for anyone looking for a short yet engaging and challenging game to play. MUSIC: The soundtrack is overall pretty good, not super lengthy and nothing too crazy that'll blow your socks off, but certainly not your highschool music theory class either. The mansion exploration tracks are pretty good in the background of studying, pretty good Minecraft background music as well. "Maiden's Capriccio" in particular is a track I enjoy putting on during cardio exercise. Pair with an Ultra Red Monster, maybe strawberry soju.

I've played through this game for quite a few hours, and I plan for those hours to increase and increase, I've 100% the game and it's incredibly fun, the items are interesting and cool to use and the mechanics of the game are very well done and interesting. The one issue I would say this game has is the lack of harder and easier difficulty settings, but you can make the game harder yourself in cool new ways, I've been doing all bosses no hit, no jump, no time stop, no snail time and no skills recently and I intend to continue making the game harder and harder! Metroidvainias in general are an amazing game genre and are always fun to me, and well I love touhou, so to see a Metroidvainia combined with touhou is just perfect. I only recently got into touhou, starting with EOSD and stuff, but I Instantly loved the games and hearing there's a metroidvainia got me incredibly excited, and I was not at all disapointed. While the lack of difficulty options is a little upsetting, it isn't too bad, in all honesty, the main reason I want more difficulty options is because I just want more of this game lol, and having my main and only complaint being "I wish there was more" really tells the quality of this game.
